Interesting note that Massies, Campbells and Wrights are also connected
in Wilson Cty, TN in 1800s... Wonder if this is just '''genealogical
coincidence''' ??!!!

The John Massie family and the John Campbell family of old Amherst certainly
did have close ties since 3 of John Massie's children married 3 of John
Campbell's children. There were two separate lines of Massies in old
Amherst County during the late 1700s: 1) the family of John Massie and
Susannah Wright and 2)Thomas Massie and his brother William (Billy) who had
the large land holdings in the Massie's Mill area.
John Massie came from Albemarle County and his father was Charles Massie of
Spring Valley Plantation. John is said to be the first school teacher on
Piney River and tutored the children of Rev. John Duncan. John and his
father both served in the Rev.War.
John and Susannah had nine children and the 3 children who married offspring
of John and Frances Campbell are:
1) Jesse Massie married Permelia Campbell 15 Nov. 1818 in Amherst Co
2) Mary "Polly" Massie married George Washington Campbell on 22 Jan. 1817 in
Amherst Co.
3) John "Jack" Massie, Jr. married Sallie Campbell.
And, yes, as A.T. said, Thomas Massie married as his second wife Nancy
Maddox, daughter of John and Betsey Campbell Maddox and granddaughter of
John and Frances Campbell.
The second line of Massies listed above, Thomas and William, came from New
Kent County. There has been much speculation about whether Charles Massie
of Albemarle County was their cousin. No proof can be found. In 1870
genealogical information from the great-granddaughter of Charles, Mrs. Moon
stated her ancestryfrom from EdmundMassie of Sandyways, Cheshire, England.
I, too, descend from the family of John and Susannah Wright Massie and the
family of John and Frances Wright. I share all the above to emphasize how
interwined the Campbells and Massies are.
Shirley

It would brighten my heart to see some of the Massie Clan, and even I
would attend and do what I could, if they would visit the Massie
Cemetery at Evergreen (The Massie Plantation) near Massies Mill and
clean the cemetery. This is not only Hollowed grounds but a
significant historical cemetery that should be a part of the
Historical Places of Virginia. This private cemetery no doubt was
developed in the early 1800's by slaves, constructed of a rock wall 30
inches or so thick and 3 feet plus high. Unfortunately, the cemetery
grounds are growing up with saplings, briers, weeds and even wild
asparagus. Eventually, the growth will choke out the periwinkle and
crack/break the beautiful marble stones - Major Thomas Massie of RW
fame, a Virginian Icon, his family and loved ones final resting place.
Dr. Lynn Nelson, History Professor at TSU, obtained both his Master
and PHd from William and Mary University, Williamsburg, Va, by giving
his thesis and dissertation on the subject: The Campbells, Coffeys,
and Fitzgeralds of the Tye River Section of Nelson County, Va
1750-1850 (paraphrasing). This history is not a strictly genealogy
study of these clans, instead it is the farming techniques and
business practices in agriculture by The Massie Family of Massies
Mill. You will get a few laughs of what the Massies call these
subordinate clans that fatten their hogs and cattle off of his grain
fields. These books are available "on loan" from W&M through your
local library. Postage may have been 1 to 2 dollars. Regards, BH
