Dear Readers,
I have forwarded an email which was posted on another list, which is talking
directly about the Revolutionary War, at Guilford Courthouse, NC.
This is the Battle which John Campbell, s/o George and Caty Campbell, of
Amherst Co VA participated in.
I thought this information would be interesting. Especially the fact that
the place name changed, it was first called Guilford Courthouse, but then
changed to Greensboro, NC. If you were looking on a map, this would be good
to know!
John Campbell's son named George Washington Campbell went by the nickname of
"Guilford".
Best regards,
Lilly Martin
If anyone is interested in Revolutionary War history in the
Carolina's
there
is an excellent book to read by John Buchanan called the "Road to Guilford
Courthouse" which includes the battles in the Carolina's.
It is an excellent book to read and is a great resource book. The email
pertaining to the Quaker's...... this book tells how the Quakers played an
important part in the war, especially as pacifist. They turned their
meeting homes
into hospitals and cared for the British and American soldiers, both,
under
one roof. There are mounds of soldiers buried close to the Friends Meeting
House directly across from Guilford College in Greensboro, NC.
At one time, Greensboro was a little village called Guilford Courthouse
until after the war when it was named for General Nathaniel Greene who led
the
American armies against Cornwallis in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse.
It is
now a National Park in Greensboro.
The book also explains the relationship of the Tories and the Whigs.
(Tories
are the British and Whigs are the Americans) Many neighbors turned
against
each other at this time. Some of the people did not want to break away
from
England bc their grandfather's had come from there. The one's that chose
to
break away, were making a stand against the high taxes. So you see
neighbors
against neighbors.
