Dear all Campbell researchers,
We all started in Scotland (I presume), then some went to Ireland for
several political/economic reasons. Some stayed put, some moved to Canada,
USA, and who-knows-where-else.
The ones named Campbell that got to USA (Colonial America) could have
arrived from England, Ireland, Scotland, the Carribean Islands, which were
British controlled, places like Jamaica, Barbados, etc.
My Campbell family happens to be in Central Virginia in 1751, but they may
have previously been in New York City, New Jersey, Conneticut, Maryland,
Pennsylvania, or even Canada.
My Virginia Campbell family could have come right off the boat from Scotland
to Jamestown, VA. or perhaps they came to some NORTHERN colony and then
worked their way downwards, looking for land, looking for other men named
Campbell, the feeling of "Clan", the same names, the same ancestry, the same
religion, the same basic culture?
Did Nelson Co and Amherst Co VA resemble their hilly country in Scotland,
their ancestral homeland area? Was there some 'super-duper' land deal going
on that caused them to pick Amherst-Nelson Co VA area? What was the reason
that so many men named CAMPBELL, but yet unrelated, all showed up at the
same point on the map? Pure coincidence, or by design?
When we have more people participating in the DNA project, we might find
that the Campbell's in Virginia are related to earlier Campbell up North in
the New England colonies, or maybe even in Pennsylvania. It just takes time
to get the pieces to fall together.
So we do all need to share our lines, because someone looking for a Campbell
in the 1600's in New England, just might turn out to be the ancestor to a
Campbell born in 1900 in Oklahoma.
Plus, when you do post your information occasionally on the mailing list, it
gets on the internet, because the messages are archived, so years from now,
some new researcher might be doing a "google" search for their ancestor, and
Up Pops your original posting on the mailing list, and they will email you
and connect that way.
Best regards,
Lilly Martin, of George and Caty Campbell, Amherst Co VA.
