Lilly--
I have a Marcellus Bateman Campbell, b. 8 Oct. 1858 married to Florence Cash
on 29 Dec 1881. This Marcellus was the son of Robert R. and Elizabeth Weeks
Campbell. I have no other info on him. Does this help you?
I also have another Marcellus Campbell that might fit your bill. He was the
son of Joseph C. and Violetta Bridge Campbell, born 5 Feb 1855.

Subject: James Marcellus Campbell b. about 1850
James MARCELLUS Campbell
born about 1850 (his father died in 1850 in Kentucky) his birth year is
from the 1880 census.
Died: ???
He is buried with his Mother, and his brother Nathaniel Campbell, at the
Campbell Cemetery, on the Grove Cash Property, here are the directions: Rt
29 North, left turn on Rt 151, left turn on Rt 665 and 778.
Father: James Henry Campbell, s/o James W. Campbell, s/o John Campbell,
s/o George and Caty Campbell of Amherst Co VA.
Mother: Sallie Massie, d/o John Massie and Sallie Campbell.
Spouse: Martha M. Camden, d/o Joseph P. Camden and Mary Wright.
1860 census: located at Amherst Co VA, Sallie Massie Campbell is listed as
34 years old, widowed, with 3 kids: James Marcellus Campbell; Melvina P.
Campbell; Nathaniel Campbell.
1880 census: located at Amherst Co VA, Sallie Massie Campbell is the head
of household still, and Marcellus and his wife Martha are living with her,
and they have a daughter named Nettie Campbell b. 1877.
According to the records of Sylvia Camden Ray, the following are the
children of Marcellus and Martha:
1. Nellie Campbell (she must have been listed as Nettie in 1880 census)
2. Lucy May Campbell
3. Lydia Campbell
4. Connie Martha Campbell
There is a Civil War record, for a Marcellus Campbell, in the 19th
Regiment of the Virginia Infantry. I am not sure this is the same man as
detailed above. He would be about 15 years old in 1865, perhaps he joined
toward the end of the War?? The name Marcellus Campbell is not that rare,
this War Service record could be for a different man?
Not long ago I posted identifications of the 1886 Amherst Co VA Personal
Property Tax list, which Sylvia Camden Ray originally posted.
On that list were 2 separate men named MARCELLUS Campbell.
I used the 1880 census of Amherst Co VA in order to try to identify each
man. In the 1880 census there are also 2 separate men listed as Marcellus
Campbell, they are:
#1. Marcellus Campbell, head of household, born about 1858, wife is
Paulina b. 1858. I do NOT yet know the ancestry of this man. Please reply
here if you can identify him.
#2. Marcellus Campbell, living inside the household of his Mother Sallie,
born about 1850, married to Martha b. 1856. This is the man who has been
detailed above.
Best regards,
Lilly Martin
