Plowed the Amherst County Court House today and found books hereto fore undiscovered -
AMHERST LAND PATENT BOOK. New stuff came to light.
Found 3 new patents for Abraham Smith all for John Smith
Page 135 Item 311, 312, and 313.,(311) Abraham Smith for John Smith with Treasury Warrant
for 466 acres to be surveyed in one survey. Dated 7 April 1802. These lands are also
identified in the Land Plat Book giving the specific locations and meets and bounds.
This specific track I continued to trace and found located on Horsley's Creek - on the
south east side of Nelson County in the area of the bottom lands of James River.
Outstanding farm lands.
Also, a patent for Elias Smith page 186 item 335:
160 acres adjoining the corner land of Abraham Smith dated 13
February 1805.
LAND BOOK 1787 - 1884
13 August 1815, page 192: James Campbell, by virtue of a Land Office Treasurer Warrant
#1810, dated 13 December 1803, enters 100 acres up the south side of Piney River adjoining
lands of Benjamin Wright, James Ramsey, George Campbell (decd) at the corner of George
Campbell's (decd) land. (added by BH - George Campbell died in 1791. Unable to
connect a relationship with the above James Campbell and George Campbell (or any other
Campbell of Amherst County) - however, James Ramsey was the son in-law of this George
Campbell (decd) and the father of William Ramsey that married Catherine Campbell, and Joel
Ramsey that married Susannah Campbell - both girls being the daughters of James Campbell
and Mary Smith.
It appears that there were more land transactions and business type civilities by our
forefathers than we were/are aware? Neglected to take a camera or I would provide
documentation. Later BH
