Dear Sandy Harris and all others,
I first heard the story of Margaret Campbell 1690-1742, who married Michael
Woods, Sr. of Albemarle Co VA from "Margo" mkwalsh(a)earthlink.net
Is Margo still on this mailing list? The date of her email posting about
this line was 2002. She said that the ancestry of Margaret Campbell was at
that time unproven. Maybe some new things have come out?
Margaret Campbell married a man born in Ireland, and they settled on an
estate in Albemarle Co VA.
This lady is important to the Amherst Co VA Campbell family of George and
Caty Campbell, in that they also were in Albemarle Co VA, the time frame of
1750's. That time frame is just after the death of Margaret Woods there, in
1742.
Maybe there is no connection, just coincidence of names. But perhaps the
"family-clan" of Margaret was connceted to 'other' Campbell families
which
chose Albemarle Co VA as home?
We know that immigrants many times "follow" other relatives to a certain
area. Letters back home, or news travels, to say that "such and such
location" is very good. Then they follow. Of course this depends on
letters of communication, which long ago was not so reliable, but still
families seemed to know where the others were at, even though far away.
I wonder if Margaret Campbell was the FIRST Campbell in Albemarle Co VA?
Could she have been the one to say that the place was good for other
Campbells to follow?
Best regards,
Lilly Martin

My Campbell ancestor who married into the Woods family emigrated
from
Ireland (she is Scottish) to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1724 and
then to
Virginia in 1734 as the first non American Indians to settle the Blue
Ridge Mountains.
