Hello to all,
We have been wondering where did George Campbell come from? Was he a
foreign born immigrant? Was he born in America? Was he 1st, 2nd, 3rd
generation born in America?
Was he born Up North in some state such as NY, or PA, or MD? Did he follow
the Great Wagon Road to Augusta Co VA along with other Campbell families
perhaps, then he would have crossed over EAST at Wood's Gap, which was the
route taken previously by Mary Campbell Woods and family, then he would have
landed in Albemarle Co VA and in fact we know he was there in the 1750 time
frame, according to his eldest son's statements. Then later dropped south
slightly to settle on the Piney River, which is the border between Nelson Co
and Amherst Co VA in the Central Va region.
Or perhaps he did not come down SOUTH on the Great Wagon Road (Interstate
81). Perhaps he headed NORTH on the "Saponi Trail", this was a well used
Indian Trail, which is basically the same road which is presently on your
maps labeled as US 29.
US 29 is in North Carolina, and goes North through Danville, Virginia. From
Danville it goes North to Lynchburg, Virginia, and from Lynchburg it goes
North to Albemarle Co VA, basically at the spot that Charlottesville sits.
This road would also take him back South a short distance to the Piney
River, where he did settle permanently, living there from 1760's thru 1791,
his death.
I have no proof of where he came from. But given the fact that North
Carolina was a place which is famous for having recieved thousands of
Scots-Irish immigrants, and given the fact that the Saponi Trail existed in
those colonial days, and this trail linked North Carolina to Central
Virginia, in the exact same area that my ancestor settled at in the 1750
time frame, I think we might like to LOOK in North Carolina for the name of
George Campbell. If he was a baby and young man there, possibly there are
no records, but we might like to look at any JOHN Campbell in North
Carolina, who would be born in the 1680-1690 basic time frame. George used
the name John Campbell for his eldest son, perhaps that was in honor of his
own Father, which was Scots naming practice.
If you find anything, please be sure to POST it here so we can all benefit
from it.
Best regards,
Lilly Martin
