Hello Mike,
I was very interested in your post which raises a lot of interesting points.
I have an interest in piping, and because of that also Skye, and have
written a few books on the subject.
You mention Duncan the Piper which immediately raised my interest level. Do
you know any more of Duncan's piping connection? Did he become 'the Piper'
after arrival in Canada or before? Did he serve in any capacity - perhaps an
estate piper or in the army/militia?
I am also intrigued about the family religion with the vast majority of
Campbells being Presbyterian.
Likewise anti-Catholic feelings on Skye after the '45.
As I am sure you know, Skye was largely supportive of the Hanoverian side
although Macleod of Raasay and the MacKinnons came out for the Jacobites.
The MacCrimmon pipers, who fought on the Hanoverian side, for instance, were
non-Catholic.
The failure of PC to enlist the support of the two great Skye chiefs was
undoubtedly a nail in his coffin although not as big as his failure to get
the support of Argyll who put almost as many men in the field as the
Jacobites did.
I'd be intrigued to be able to delve into this a bit more with you.
Reply to me off list if you wish.
regards
Bruce Campbell

Re Mike
My Campbell family hails from the Isle of Mull and possibly Tiree and other
Islands in the vicinity. There was a lot of movement between Islands not to
mention Ireland was 25 miles away by sea .A middle name Francis is used in
my line which was not used in Mull a lot except by the Mcleans. It is
possible there is an Irish connection.
I hit a brick wall after Ronald Campbell bn abt 1774 of the Argyllshire
Miltia married a Marrion Mclean bn abt 1778.Her lawful son Hector Francis
was bapt. in 1806 (according to the parish record). He is the only child of
Ronald that I can find.Hector Francis married Catherine Fletcher in 1832
in
Kilfinchen ,Ross of Mull.. She was his 1st wife.In the Mull1841 census they
lived in Ardtun near Bunessen.Their children were John Francis,Allan,
Donald
Francis my g grandfather,Charles , and marion..His wife died before the
family left for Ontario on the ship Conrad from Greenock in 1850.The 1840s
the Ross of Mull was being cleared .It is said Johnn Campbell mor was doing
the dirty work - he came from a nearby Island. His picture in Jo Currys
history looks a like my dear departed father who had a very gentle
nature.It
is said the Campbells had a certain resemblance to each other so my dad is
of the hook.
Hector and family frist went to Grey county and N.Bruce County in
Ontario.He
married a Susan Kennedy( her mum was Flora McGilvray )from Mull and they
started another family.I have been contacted recently from both the
families
by 3 very nice cousins which has made the search easier. Hectors oldest
son
John F. left for IIIinois USA and part of the family moved to Montana and
Cal. USA.My ggrandfather Donald moved to Whitemouth Manitoba. His daughter
married an Irish Scot from SW Donegal named William Wilson. Many of the
family moved west.I overdid it and kept going to Australia Lachlin
Mcquarie( Ulva?Mull) was the best of Assie Gov. and is known as the father
of Australia.His 2nd wife was a Campbell.As a result the Mcquarie and
Campbell names are all over the place. My new cousins and I will be trying
to
trace the rest of Hectors children.
regards Gerry
