Possibly comes from the Hebrew name of unknown origin (possibly
Mahalath)...was revived by 17th c. English Puritans... almost identical to
the Arab name "Mahalia"...popular in the American South and the British
Isles in the 19th c...also said to mean "woman" in some Native American
dialects

Mahala sounds like an Indian name. If I remember correctly, Cherokees
were
in North Carolina.

Good guess....but in the time frame 1790-1830...the name "Mahala"
was very popular amongst many Southern....non-Indian populations.
I have several family lines...all non-Indian.....who have used this in
every
generation...since about 1790. I am told it's an obscure Biblical name.

Still hunting my line of CAMPBELL's. We pick up their trail circa 1787 in
GA,
and then we are able to follow it downline...very well.
Our line has now DNA tested and now listed in Group # 40.
It's the PRE-1787 we're hunting.....for this particular group:
Charles CAMPBELL, b. abt 1730, unk location - d. before 1817, either GA or
LA
m. 1st, Elizabeth BELINDEN [BELLENDEN, BALANDINE], d. bef. 1800
mother of: Levy (Levi), Charles, Lorany and probably Keziah
m. 2nd, 1800, Mrs. Richard [Milly HORN] BAILEY, in Oglethorpe Co., GA
