I am so glad that someone finally knows the story & gave us the details. I
was going a lot on blind faith. I don't want to spend the money on a
project right now so was glad to find this source so that I could test as
many as possible in our family, rather than just me or another. I hate to
wait 6 months or longer, but I guess that is just something you have to deal
with when it doesn't cost you anything. I'll take what I can get & then if
I decide to do another one, I'll just do it. I'm sure there are lots of
people who will value the info you have given us all. As I've said before
too, someone who heads up a DNA project on another of my lines said you
could submit your results to them & compare to broaden your research.
Sounds good to me. We just have to all remember that everything has it's
goods & bads. I would be glad to see more corrections on the LDS & World
Family Tree sites. Anything that is submitted by the public like that is
bound to have errors. We have all made them & then there are those who just
take anybody's word for truth without checking into it themselves. I made
mistakes like that when I first started researching & information wasn't so
easily found on the internet. I wasn't able to go to courthouses & such to
check & really didn't know how, so I believed a lot of what I found. I have
since corrected a lot of that, but I didn't make the mistake of submitting
to public sites. I am thankful that DNA testing can now be used for our
benefit in family tree research.
Thanks again for the valuable information.
Melissa.

There is some confusion here. Ancestry has purchased Relative Genetics,
http://www.relativegenetics.com and will be offering DNA test through
Relative Genetics. The testing lab for Relative Genetics, and for DNA
Heritage (a company in England,
http://www.dnaheritage.com ) is Sorenson
Genomics,
http://www.sorensongenomics.com The free DNA testing is offered by a
different entity, a non-profit foundation, Sorenson Molecular Genealogy
Foundation,
http://www.smgf.org Mr Sorenson is a Mormon, but the project is
not associated with the LDS church. In fact, it was moved out of BYU
because the university did not think it fit their research plans.
The pedigree you send with the testing kit is the way you will find your
results when they are placed in the DNA databases. You search for the names
or the Ancestral File designation of a pre-1900 ancestor. When you find a
pedigree with that person, look at it to see if it is your pedigree. If it
is, then you can get either your Y chromosome or your mitochondrial DNA
results. Both databases are operating now. It is expected that there will
be an additional autosomal DNA database at some time in the future. There
is no charge for any of this. Mr Sorenson is a billionaire and he is
funding the SMGF.
If you can't stand to wait for 6 months to a year for results, then pick a
commercial testing lab, and pay several hundred dollars for your results.
To match what you get from SMGF at a commercial lab you will need to start
at 37 or 43 markers for Y DNA and with both HVR i and HVR II tests for
mtDNA. Then you can also do autosomal testing for even more money.
I run 10 Y DNA studies at FTDNA. I recommend that everyone use SMGF because
it may be too expensive for people to get the 37 or 43 marker test and do
the mtDNA tests, and it serves as a good check on the commercial lab since
the SMGF results should match the commercial results.
Earlier someone said that SMGF couldn't check the pedigrees.
Actually, they have genealogists on staff who do check the submitted
pedigrees and link them into the records from the LDS Ancestral File if
there are matches. Since part of the Ancestral FIle is incorrect, you
should check your pedigree at SMGF and let them know if there is a problem
with the Ancestral FIle link. In my case, there is a problem with both my
parents lines in the Ancestral File. My ancestor Edward Perkins of New
Haven is linked to the wrong family and DNA testing has shown this is wrong.
The same is true with John Ball of Stafford and Fairfax Co.s VA who is
wrongly linked to Col WIlliam Ball an ancestor of George Washington, The
DNA testing has shown that John Ball is not a descendant of Col WIlliam
Ball.
I hope this helps clear up the questions about SMGF.

Steven C. Perkins

No, not another test, but you can take your results & compare
them to
other projects. Someone posted that there were some charges but I
haven't found that yet. Although I wouldn't be surprised. The only
thing I've heard negative so far is that the results are slow in
coming back. I did hear that
Ancestry.com was buying Sorenson. So...
Everyone knows what that means ... I love the info I find from
Ancestry, but a lot of people resent their methods. With Sorenson,
there is some privacy still, I think. It is definitely worth studying
more & a
very personal choice, I suppose.
However, I have chosen to participate & have spoken with another
very
experienced researcher from another line who has also chosen to
participate.
We'll see. Everyone just has to decide on their own. Free &
be
involved in a more public database or pay & keep it more private?
That is the choice if you want to do DNA testing. It would be nice
for it to be more affordable, & it is compared to when it started, but
it is not a household necessity & therefore not something that a lot
of researchers can justify. I was pleased to find a "free" source to
try. I just hope I don't regret it! I encourage everyone to find out
all they can about it & please keep us all posted, as I will do.
Melissa.
