Lisa: Please don't apologize for jumping in. That's what the list is for,
after all. I am including the list in this reply in the hope that somebody
can help us solve our puzzles.
The first BARBER/CAMPBELL connection that I have found was in Fairfield
County, SC. William CAMPBELL bought land from William WILEY in 1799 with
David CAMPBELL and James BARBER as witnesses. Then in 1805, William sold the
land back to WILEY with witnesses William ADAMS, James BARBER and John
BARBER. Now, again, I am stymied, though. I have found no absolute proof
that this was my William - no wife signed the deed and there was another,
older, William who was still there after our guy left.
William Campbell was in Tennessee before 1810 because he had a son born in
that state that year. We can first place him , with any degree of certainty,
in Williamson County in 1814 when he had a son born there. William sold out
in Williamson and was in Hickman in time for the 1820 census where he had
neighbors SHARPs, ADLETTs (spelled a half dozen ways), James YOUNG, BINGHAM,
several HARDERs and other names that later become connected to the family. I
always figured his wife's folks may be among them but I cannot prove that
either.
William's other sons:
1. James born SC 1802
2. John born SC 1804
3. LEWIS born SC or NC 1806
4. William b. TN (unknown county) 1810
5. Hiram b. TN (Williamson) 1814
6. a son born about 1820, possibly Duncan, but he is not proven here.
7. Richard (my ancestor) (Hickman) 1821
8. another son b. between 1820 and 1825, possibly Samuel but he is not
proven either.
No BARBERs living especially near him at that time although Alan, Mary, Zeba
and Abram BARBER were in the same county living near Richard Campbell's son,
Hiram and Richard's brother-in-law Arthur SMITH.
Yes, indeed, sometimes when you can't get in the genealogical front door,
you can find a side door that opens!

Subject: RE: CAMPBELL and BARBER
Carolyn and Mickey,
I apologize. I don't mean to be jumping in here...on your conversation, but
....you have definitely managed to get my attention. *S*
It's NOT often that I see...CAMPBELL's and BARBER's in the same posts.
I'll limit my intrusion...by mentioning that my CAMPBELL's are 'supposed'
to have had a line move to TN...just after 1800. The area was centered in
the Bedford, Coffee, and Lincoln Co's area. At least that is what I have
figured.
On the "Old Natchez Trace"...there was a Way Station called,
"Campbell's",
and this is the Inn that 'uncle Buck' had spent several days. With the
Innkeeper refusing pay for food/lodging.....claiming kinship. His
name...William CAMPBELL.
Even on the later maps...this "Campbell Station"...was noted. Over the
years, as I was working on my father's TN lines...I kept stumbling across
this...and it just hadn't occurred to me that this set of CAMPBELL's could
be related to my mother's CAMPBELL's.
Then...once I discovered a sibling, Laurany, for my supposedly 'only child
Levi'...
and discovered that she had moved to TN with a William CAMPBELL's group.
The dots started to connect!!! *S*
Now that we have the CAMPBELL DNA results...if we can find a male of this
set, we could settle the part of my puzzle once and for all. *S*
With that said, and taking a moment to mention that I recently posted
looking for Charles and Levy (Levi) CAMPBELL's, I wanted to mention that my
WATKINS ...is also connected to BARBER.
In fact...Levi's wife, Sarah WATKINS, was the daughter of Sarah BARBER.
Sarah BARBER m. at age 14, in 1754...Reace WATKINS Sr.
This line is the George BARBER Sr m. Elizabeth (??Moore??) of Augusta Co.
VA.
George BARBER Sr died young, leaving Elizabeth with 3 small children, Sarah,
George Jr and Plyer BARBER. As with most widow's of her day....she
re-married.
Her 2nd husband was Mathew PATTON.
Quick time line....
Just after 1760...they moved down to the area of Wake-Johnston Co.'s NC.
Just after 1784...some of the family (BARBER, WATKINS, PATTON) moved on down
to Wilkes Co. GA. At that time...some also stayed in NC.
Between 1800-1820...several of these lines moved west into TN, MS and AL.
In the year 1810, my own line...went to LA, via Wilkinson Co. MS for a
layover, and then in 1811 they continued on into the Lafayette and Vermilion
Parishes LA.
This was when my line lost contact with those who had left GA or would be
leaving.
There is a good possibility...that the BARBER's you mention are a part of my
BARBER's. A line of my WATKINS also went to TN from GA and it's not beyond
the realm of possibility...that some of my BARBER's went to TN too.
Do you happen to know some of the history behind the group of BARBER's that
you mentioned in your posts??
To help you....I'm including this URL:

My cousin, David W. Morgan, is the main researcher of our lines and this is
his website. His published book on the BARBER line is online there. *S*
OH! I almost forgot to mention it. We've managed to find a descendant of
Plyer BARBER's...and we're all now waiting for the DNA results. So that if
you know of someone for the other BARBER's...a comparison may be in the
offing.
Sometimes...I find that stepping a little sideways...helps to find family.
*S*
Wishing all....a very Merry Christmas,
Lisa Grimes
