Friends,
I got so many resonses on my original message that I am reposting
the entire list from the book "Colonial Caroline, A History of
Caroline County, Virginia" by T. E. Campbell, Dietz Press, Richmond
VA, 1954, page 427. I will post some of the responses in a
separate post. Thanks to everyone.

"Bastards were commonplace in colonial Caroline, although
the punishment for a white woman, free or indentured, who
bore an illegitimate child was 5 lashes at the the whipping-post
or a 50 shilling or 500 lb. tobacco fine. Few women had the
money or tobacco to pay the fine and most of them were
whipped. A list of the white women who had bastards follows.
All were whipped unless specifically stated otherwise.
