Thanks, Lilly and Sam,
This is a real genealogy challenge. We have so little to go on. The
cemetery record of Harry J. Campbell and Janie V. Campbell may be a big
break, if they turn out to be the right Harry J. and Janie V. Campbell.
My cousin's birth certificate says her father was Harry James Campbell, Jr.,
born in Roanoke, VA, on 8 December 1924. It says his father's name was
Jasper Campbell and his mother's name was Janie Victoria Angell. On her
father's WWII records (Army and then Air Force), it says he was born in
Charleston (AF says Seth), West Virginia. HJ Jr.'s death certificate says
his parents were Harry James Campbell and Janie Victoria Angell. I think
this is him in the 1930 census in Alleghany Co, VA.
1930 Census, Covington, Alleghany Co, VA:
Harry Campbell, rents his home, male, white, 28, married at age 20,
VA/VA/VA, Millwright, Rayon Plant
Janie Campbell, wife, female, white, 25, married at 17, Coner? (probably at
Rayon Plant)
Pauline E. Campbell, dau, 7, VA/VA/VA
Henry Campbell, son, 5, WV/VA/VA
Rena Campbell, dau, 4 yrs, 1 mo, VA/VA/VA
Estelle Cach, lodger, 43, divorced, VA/VA/VA, no occupation
I think I will proceed with this Craig Co and Botetourt Co connection to see
where it leads me, and to see if there are other connection clues. I would
love to connect Linda back to Patrick Campbell, Jr. of Botetourt County.
Good solid roots are so important, even if you have weak limbs.
Thanks for your help,
Betty

Dear Betty,
I am not familiar with the Campbell names here, but I can tell you that a
Patrick Campbell thought to be born about 1744, and who died 1778, was known
as Patrick Campbell of Botetourt Co VA, and he named his brothers in his
will as James Campbell and John Campbell. His wife was Ann Ware, and he had
at least one son, named James Campbell who married Sarah Seat.
This is not my own family, but I have come across his records before, he
bought land in Augusta Co and Rockbridge Co VA, his will was filed 4-8-1778
at Rockbridge Co VA, on 11-3-1774 he sold land to Ann Powell, and he stated
he was Patrick Campbell of Botetourt Co VA. The witnesses were James Ware
and Ben Pilared, this land transaction was filed in Amherst Co VA, and his
marriage record in 11-3-1774 was also filed at Amherst Co VA, but he
consistantly is called Patrick Campbell of Botetourt Co VA.
According to Virginia law and custom, the marriage record is filed at the
BRIDES home county, so his wife Ann Ware was from Amherst Co VA, but he
apparently was not.
This information might not help you at all to get from 1750 all the way to
1900, but at least it will give you the names of 3 men who might have been
assocaited with Botetourt Co VA.
Best regards,
Lilly Martin

Subject: [Campbell] Harry J. Campbell and Janie Victoria Angell
Does anyone know if the following two people buried in the
Crossroads
Church
Cemetery, Craig Co, VA, are Harry James/Jasper Campbell and Janie Victoria
Angell? I believe this Harry J. Campbell was the son of William Chapman
Campbell of Botetourt Co, VA, and Arena Pafford Crawford, born in Craig
Co,
VA.
I am helping my cousin research her Campbell family. We are working with
very little information. She is the daughter of Harry James Campbell, Jr.
We know that from her parents' marriage license. Linda's father, Harry J.
Campbell, Jr., left the family in the 1960s after troubling times and
finally a divorce. Linda knew almost nothing about him, until we found
his
death certificate in Vero Beach, Florida. The death certificate lists his
parents as Harry J. Campbell and Janie Victoria Angell.
CROSSROADS CHURCH CEMETERY - Craig County VA

CAMPBELL, Harry J. 15 Aug 1900 - 01 Jul 1952
CAMPBELL, Janie A. 29 Apr 1904 - 17 Jan 1937
Thank you for any help you can give us.
