It appears that the Campbells of Scotland were of Presbyterian faith and a
portion of the clan left Scotland to settle in Ireland to become free of the
rules, etc. of the Presbyterian religion. In Ireland they joined the Catholic
Church. These religious differences caused a split in the clan and the Irish
families no longer claimed to be from Scotland. Just my thoughts on the
religious differences.
In James Webb's book ``Born Fighting: How the Scots-Irish Shaped America''
he starts talking about Scots-Irish fighting on the side of the Protestant
King William at Londenderry and Coynes in the 1690s. Webb talks about the
migration patterns of the Scots-Irish who often came to America through
Pennsylvania, avoiding the Puritans in New England. Many then went south
along the western side of the existing colonies where they were tolerated
in colonies like Virginia where the official religion was Anglican, perhaps
because the Scots-Irish were a buffer between the eastern part of the
colonies and hostile Indians.
My GGGrandfather, William M. Campbell, was born in Sydney, Cape Breton Nova
Scotia in 1811, migrating to Quincy Florida, thence to Ringgold County Iowa
in 1850 or so.
