If you check in NJ & NY, you will find many Campbell's who were Presbyterian
in faith. You will also find other religions also...but especially in NJ,
they were mostly Presbyterian.
The Campbell's who came into Middlesex county NJ, were among the earliest to
arrive in America. They came with Lord Niel Campbell on the John and Sarah
in 1652. With Lord Niel Campbell were:
James Camell (Campbell)
John Camell
Neile Camell (Lord Niel)
In a letter written in Nov 1651, Campbell was written as Kemble. This
letter was written as an introduction of sorts for Lord Niel...and the
Kemble was meaning Lord Niel Campbell.
Lord Neal was to receive land in NY, but was turned away for some reason
(illness, if I recall was part of it, and they didn't get as much land as
promised), and were accepted in NJ.
In 1685 the following Campbell's came on the "Henry & Francis"
Robert Campbell
David Campbell
John Campbell
William Campbell
Also on this ship was Grissell Gamble... Could she have been Grissell
Campbell? Also a Robert Gilcrest.
The above left Scotland due to religious persecution. Only a few non
Campbells left voluntarily.
In 1716 arriving from Scotland into Boston was the Snow "Amity," from
Glasgow...on board was:
Nathaniel Breed, Skipper
Elizabeth Campbell, her mother and four daughters.
Thomas Young, a youth.
William Kirkwood, a pedlar.
Thirteen servants.
This was 14 May 1716.
Did the above Elizabeth come to America to join her husband?
Irish Immigrants to New England
19 August 1744. "The Selectmen sent up to Almshouse sixteen girls and three
boys and a woman arrived here yesterday from Cape Breton, who were taken
about six weeks since by a French Privateer, being bound from Ireland to
Philadelphia." The overseer of the poor was directed to maintain them "at
the expense of the Province." Among them was:
Elizabeth CAMPBELL
In 1766 Patrick Campbell arrived in Boston..
There are some Kemball's who came to America earlier than Lord Niel:
