North Carolina's county records, in custody of the North Carolina State
Archives, are generally the most valuable for genealogical research. Because the
original and microfilmed records are arranged by county rather than by category
or surname, researchers must know which county to investigate for each event
in an ancestor's life (the county as it was then, not as it is now). Even
though a family never moved, for example, the husband's 1742 purchase deed might be
in Edgecombe, his 1759 will in Granville, his son's 1767 marriage in Bute,
and his widow's 1780 estate file in Warren. <Very likely The Husband was in
Edgecombe County in 1742 and in Waren in 1780
WAS as so: Warren county from Bute county in 1779 Bute county from
Granville County in 1764 Then in 1746 Granville County from Edgecombe County
The chart below includes the formation date of each North Carolina county,
the county/ies from which it was formed, and the numerical code assigned to its
records by the North Carolina State Archives. An example of the use of this
code number to denote the county is in Thorton W. Mitchell's North Carolina
Wills: A Testator Index, 1665-1900.
To find a county click on the first letter of the county name in the letter
box or scroll through the list until you reach its alphabetical place. If the
county name is underlined or highlighted, clicking on it will link to a short
history of the county and a state map that shows the county's location.
NOW AGAIN: Your Ancestor Moved from North carolina ABT 1817 To Indiana,
There are 92 Counties in Indiana, 72 of that 92
Counties were formed After Your Ancestor Arived in 1817
Needing to know the Town that the Ancestor relocated to is very important,
if I did Not Know, THE Town that Ancestor relocated too, TRY to dertermine
the Name
I have a National Road Atlas <MAP> I locate the County that the town is now
in Check the Formation of the Counties in that County , to learn IF the Town
that Ancestor Landed in is still in the Same County
LIKE THE N. C. Example: Edgecombe County Through Bute County into Waren
County. That is three Offical jurisdoctions & THE ancestor was still in
the Original Georgraphfic Location
I have learned by Knowing those SMAL FACTS, is an enhansment to Family
Research
IN my family research My Map is Justb as important as any Information that
I Can Get, because Location is as important iNFO as one Can get
TO get the County LIST: Shows CODE, # of the County
County Name, DATE, When county was formed,
Parent County <MOST Important, Shows Which The County was Formed From
NOW AGAIN: to get this Information, The Carolina County Development,
Development of INDIANA Counties Formation of
Virginia Counties.
I find a ROAD ATLAS most helpful, Wallgreen Has a Good one
I hope that CUZ Tom Heatler <the List Master lets this come through, I
believe that it will help OUR Campbell Cousins to Locate our KIN FOLKS
IF it helps PLEASE
