Check out Col Aeneas Campbell , Maryland Flying Camp. I have seen this
James attached to his family. Aeneas was born about 1730 and is the
first Sheriff of Loudoun Co in 1757. He died in 1812 in Montgomery Co,
MD which is just across the river from Leesburg. Aeneas is our brick wall.

You mention that in looking for the parents of Nancy (or Ann) Campbell, you
found a John & James in MD.
There was a James Campbell in MD, he ended up in OH & married to a Elizabeth
Reed. They married in 1817 (I think that's right)...
This James had a son named Lenox Campbell (md a Rebecca). They show on the
1850-1870 census. Elizabeth shows on the 1850 (she died in 1855), but in a
different county.
Here is my thoughts on the Rev War file of said James Campbell b MD. He
joined the VA Contnl. Malitia in 1775, stayed a year. He filed for pension
in 1819 at age 64... Until 1853, when his widow filed for his pension, no
mention of a son is made. James did mention in 1820 that he and his wife
had a daughter Etty Campbell who was 6 mos old. Elizabeth Reed had a
daughter also prior to her marriage to James Campbell... I forget her name,
but can look it up...I saved the file.
Since James mentioned the daughter & not his son, there had to be a reason.
Here is what a letter from Winfield Scott, commissioner of (I am guessing
NARA) says:

Rev and 1812 War Society (ok, there you have it..he was commissioner of this
society).

To: Mrs. James Morrow
Hotel Clayton
Waukegan, IL
Madam:
I have to advise you from the papers in the Rwar Pension claim, W 25384, it
appears that James Campbell inlisted at Leesburg, Loudoun Co VA in July 177
an d served as private and orderly-sargent in Captains George Johnstone's
and Tibbs' companies, Col Morgan's VA Regiment, he was in the batle of Great
Bridge, siege of Norfolk, and battle of Germantown, and served until 1778.
He was allowed pension on his application executed 19 June 1818, while a
resident of Montgomery county, MD, aged about 64 years. The date and place
of his birth are not on file. He died in August or Sept 1827.
Soldier married 15 Apr 1819 in Leesburg, VA, Elizabeth Reed. She was
allowed pension on her application executed 2 Aug 1855, whie a resident of
Springfield, Clarke co, OH, aged 70 years.
In 1820, soldier referred to a daughter, Etty, as six mos. Old; and in 1855,
Lenox Campbell, stated he was a son of James Campbell, dec'd. There is no
further data on file as to family.
Respectfully,
Winfield Scott, Commissioner.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Since I had read several pages (up to this letter on page 20 of the file
(Lenox's letter was page 33), and no mention of a son was ever made...I
decided to go back and check every page...here is what I find as far as
family & dates:
*15 Nov 1827, James Campbell appeared for hearing on pension. Age listed as
67, residing in Montgomery county MD.
*Says enlisted in July 1795 in 2nd VA reg.
*In 1778 he was an orderly sargent & discharged due to an accident with an
axe (he was injured).
*Said in 1818 was given a pension on certif #6799.
*is a teacher, teaching a small school of children.
*has a wife, Elizabeth who is about 48 yrs of age, and a daughter Etty age
abt 6 mos.
*his wife has a daughter named Juliana aged about 7 yrs old.
*he goes on to list every teacup, etc. he owns.
Page 9 has an affidavit stating that James Cammel & Elizabeth Reed were
married 15 Apr 1819 by minister named Griffith in VA.
Page 12 has Elizabeth stating her marriage date again, and that her husband
died on 15 Aug 1827.
Page 13 has a Julia Hutchins who says she has known the couple since their
marriage in 1819. This may or may not be her daughter.
Page 17..Elizabeth on 2 Aug 1855 is applying for bounty land, besides the
pension. A James Phillips is also verifying who Eliz is.
Page 20 is the letter I wrote of above.
Page 25 is a document stating that James Campbell enlisted in Va Militia in
1775. Dated 12 Sep 1818.
Page 43 is a letter from Lenox Campbell stating his father died in 1823 or
1824. Also states that the widow (married after 1800) may be entitled to
widow's benefits, but that the pension files already on file should be
checked carefully. It seems this Lenox may have been asked by Elizabeth for
a letter to help her get the benefits...but he seems to be wanting
government to look closely at her claims. I am guessing he had Jame's
land..and she was wanting it or more.
Since he was born in 1820 to 1822 (depending on census) in MD... It seems he
would be the son of James & Elizabeth...but he does not seem to know when
his father died, nor the exact wedding date, etc.
Not sure this helps you eliminate James...but thought I would put it out
there...someone may need the info.

Looking for Nancy Campbell born ca 1787 possibly in Maryland or
Pennsylvania near the Mason-Dixon line. She married Joseph Cooper in
1802 and lived in Baltimore County, MD and in Baltimore City, MD. I
believe her mother was also named Nancy Campbell, but cannot prove it.
She is probably the half sister, step-sister or sister-in law of a
Riley. Does this ring any bells among you Campbell searchers? I really
need help!!
The two earliest male Campbell's living in that area (tax lists and
census records) are James Campbell and John Campbell but I haven't found
any connection to either of them.
(Nancy is often a diminutive of Ann, so she could be Ann Campbell but in
official records is called "Nancy".)
