Hi everyone! I am going try looking at the given names of our Campbell's
and then checking for surnames in the timeframe
That will let me try to find out where these names (Fountaine, Ellis,
Ambrose for example) started from.
If you don't already have an account at
footnote.com, you should really look
at the service, it's not
That expensive (50.00 a year I think) & lots of original documents on film.
I went to
http://www.footnote.com
and checked out Fontaine/Fountain spellings in Rev War...here is the
first one I found (76 pages). This is a letter sent in reply to a Sara
LaFontaine Smith in Fresno, CA in 1925 (she requested all family info):
20 Apr 1925
Madam:
I have to advise you that from the papers in the RWar pension Claim
W.7329, it appears that WILLIAM FONTAINE was a teacher in Amherst Co VA
in 1774.
Early in the fall of 1775 he was appointed Capt. of a company of
minutemen in Amherst co, VA, and was in th ebattle of Great Bridge. He
was commissioned Capt. of th e@nd VA Reg 30 Jan 1776, and served one
year. In 1778 he served with a company of voluntter Horse and under
Gen. NELSON. He was appointed Major of Col Francis TAYLOR's Reg of VA
Convention Guardd 24 Dec 1778, was promoted to Lt. Col of said regiment
in March 1779, and served as such until May 1781. He was also at the
siege of Yorktown.
He married 27 Dec 1787 (to Marge C, looks like the 24th), in Hanover co
VA, to Ann MORRIS. He died 6 Oct 1810 in said county. His widow, Ann,
was allowed pension on her application of 20 Aug 1838, at which time
she was seventy-two years of age and a resident of Hanover co VA.
They had the following children:
Peter F, who died prior to 1833; William; James; Edmund; John M who
died before 1833; Charles who died before 1833; Louisa Elisabeth who
died before 1805; Alexander R who was born after 1805; and Sarah F who
married Alexander P ROSE and theri children were Edmund F, Louisa,
Lawrence Berry, and Charles.
Respectfully,
Wilder S Metcalf, Commissioner of Rev & 1812 Wars Section.
I give the above to give you an idea of how one man was in several
counties in VA during the early days...Now, here is a list of the other
Captains who served with & under Wm FONTAINE:
Thursday 26 March 1776
(note from MargeC..there is a lot of repeated words, so I am giving the
names of those who received commissions only & all men were captains):
GREEN, MARKHAM, SEAYRES,DAVIS, FLEMMING, BALLARD, CAMPBELL, GIBSON,
JOHNSON, PARKER, NICHOLAS, FONTAINE, MEADE, ALEXANDER. There is one
Captian who's name is missing (torn page).
The above shows that Fontaine was in the same area as Campbell &
Gibson...and since he served in Amherst county...probably a possible
source for "our" Fontaine given names.
The hiers of Wm Fontaine did receive land bounty warrants in their
father & grandfathers name...it does not say where the land was located
in the letter of approval, but does give warrant #'s and amounts given.
They got the warrants in 1845, so most likely went to grandchildren for
most part.
this pension file has 76 pages.
I will continue to check to see where this Wm & Ann's kids ended up &
whom they married...many died early without issue.
