Good afternoon to all,
The other day...I had asked about Charles CAMPBELL, the
son of Gilbert CAMPBELL (d.1750). I received a private
reply that has answered my question. Thank you. *S*
I now have the answer for Charles's age in 1750...as he was
approximately 9 yrs old at the time of his father's death.
Basically just under the age for apprenticeship.
"The estimated age for Charles, son of Gilbert, is able to
be validated with the baptismal records of Rev. John Craig
(based at Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church in 1740-49)
were preserved. The congregation, Tinkling Spring Presb.
is in Fishersville VA, between Staunton and Waynesboro,"
So...by 1760...this Charles was then 19-20 years of age.
Still under the age of maturity.
The problem rests with the fact that this Charles seems to
have either died without leaving a Will, or his Will was a
part of the VA records that are now lost, or...this
Charles left VA and...died "somewhere" after he left.
This leaves me wondering if any of the Gilbert CAMPBELL
male descendants have stepped up to join the DNA Project.
For the record, Gilbert's will and probate of 1750
clearly names his children and they are as follows.
-----------
1. Elizabeth, m. ___ Woods (poss. Richard Wood, a cousin)
m. bef. 1750 ??
2. James, wife unk,
His children are listed in his son Patrick's Will
This Patrick's will was proved in Rockbridge Co. VA
Patrick m. Ann WARE, one son, James, a under 8 yrs.
Patrick named siblings (prob. in birth order):
Isaac, James, Charles and William.
One sister was mentioned named Isabel.
3. Prudence, m. Andrew HAYS
4. George, b. 1737-1739
5. Charles, b. 1740-1741
Both George and Charles were listed in the Will as INF.
So were under their majority, but specifically were under
age to own land or speak for themselves before the courts.
That's where figuring Charles's age came into play and
the estimates had run from...nappies to age 16 or so.
6. Sarah, b. abt. 1742
7. Lettice, b. abt 1744, was 14 as of 17 May 1758 when she
chose her brother, George, to be her legal guardian.
George m. Agnes (some say Nancy Agness) McClure bef. 1765
when he and his wife and mother sold some of the property
to Arthur McClure.
This George's will proved Woodford County KY, 7 Feb 1814.
He lists no wife, so probably deceased, and sons Gilbert
and Samuel, and daughters Nancy Kirkham (an abstract had
spelled it Berkham), Mary, Elizabeth, and Janet. (an early
abstract suggested another daughter but the original has
now disproved that)
Janet m. John Armstrong and settled in Dubois Co. IND.
Besides George (Will dated 7 Feb 1814 in Woodford Co KY),
Isaac Campbell (son of James, grandson of Gilbert) left a
will signed 17 May 1783 in Lincoln Co KY. He listed the
same siblings as did his brother Patrick, Rockbridge Co VA.
Of course he had excluded Patrick, who died first.
Evidence for an age for Charles as of 1750.....
the youngest son of Gilbert & Prudence (Osran) CAMPBELL,
was baptized on 15 Oct 1741, so abt age 9 when Gilbert died.
The baptism occurred at the home of Gilbert, who lived a
good distance south of the Tinkling Spring meetinghouse-
-on the exact site of downtown Lexington (Rockbridge Co) VA.
Several other children were baptized at Campbell's house at
the same time, so there were probably some catch-ups involved.
The others included Margaret and Samuel Woods, children of
Richard Woods and probably Elizabeth, dtr of Gilbert.
Also, Agness, daughter of William Woods.
William Hall baptized his children John and William also at
Campbell's house on the same day.
After 1742, the Lexington-area neighbors formed their own
congregation, 1st called the Forks (of the James River) Mtg,
then Hall's Meetinghouse (land from William Hall), later
named New Monmouth, currently Lexington Presbyterian.
-------------
As I now understand the events and location...it was about
"an hour's walk" west of Lexington (i.e., Campbell's house).
The New Monmouth church records go back pretty far, but my
source doesn't have access to those. At least not yet. *S*
The Charles Campbell who was the son of Gilbert Campbell
and Prudence Osran of Augusta Co VA is one of the interesting
"loose ends" among the multiple people named Charles.
Most of whom left their wills in the Augusta/Rockbridge region.
Even with my older research, and newer shared data, I still
have not been able to figure out who Gilbert's Charles,
had married.
Does anyone have any ideas where I might find that info???
Thanking all in advance,
Lisa
