Janie, I think we have talked before. Do you have the following in your
line (this from one of Lon's cousins):
*** I have been looking at a Ellis Campbell from Alabama, born about 1833.
He would be the age of our Ellis's sons. I often wondered if there was any
relation to us. I have been able to trace him to the tree that we are
connecting to dna wise. I will start with Ellis Campbell born Ala 1833. He
married Margaret Tankersly. The following are straight up the
tree....father of Ellis, etc. with their spouses. John King
Campbell/Elizabeth Roundtree...William Campbell/Mary Ann King...Captain
William C. Campbell/Mary Ellison and David "Black" Campbell/Jane"
Jean"
Cunningham. As I told you before, the father of Black David is a brother to
John Campbell who married Grace Hay. John/Grace had the son that is called
White David Campbell. Our line is connected to this John/Grace line. Some
say the brother of John Campbell/Grace Hay is Alexander Campbell the father
of Black David. I believe more research needs to be done regarding these
facts. I gathered this information from Ancestry's World Tree and is
subject to being verified. I have often wondered if this "Ellis" could be
the nephew of our Ellis. John King Campbell was born about 1803. I had at
one time thought he could be a brother to Ellis since the birth dates were
so close. Another reason I thought this could be the correct line for Ellis
is because of Mary Ann King. Our Ellis's second daughter is named Mary Ann
and the naming patterns name the second daughter after the father's mother
which Mary Ann would fit. I suspect the name Ellis in this family line
comes from the surname Ellison which is in this line. Then on the other
hand, I spent some time using Footnote last Saturday and was able to print
off a bunch of stuff regarding the pension that Nancy Clawson Campbell
applied for. There was alot of paperwork and have to go back and finish
printing it off, since the library was closing. In that family I see alot of
names that are familiar like Matthew, Freeman, etc. It is hard to
say...perhaps it will all fit together one day. In the paperwork regarding
the pension of Nancy, there was a Henry Campbell who said he was 84 in 1851
and said he knew Ellis R. Campbell. That would make him born about 1767.
The paperwork did not say the relatonship. Have you heard of him?
Ellis/Nancy were married by a minister from the Presbyterian Church January
1, 1781 per the records. ***
I have seen the above Ellis b 1833. I also picked up on a line on Ancestry
(no real sources though, so won't post much here) that has a Connection to a
Campbell/Sutton/Clawson family in Middlesex co NJ...who end up having been
in MO, VA, TN, AL.... So I am now trying to document that. If it pans
out...it gives me a clear link from Ellis b 1804 back to his NJ family that
ended up in VA. Now, that would be a real hoot...but, then what do I do for
fun!?!..lol.
When checking records for Campbell's...also do the same check for the
surname Cammell...it does not come up on Ancestry as a soundex variation of
Campbell...have to do as a separate search. Ellis Campbell b 1804 VA, lived
in TN by 1830 (Lincoln co), lived in AL (his son, James Mehlander said
Jackson county), had, Matthew (Mathias), James Mel, Ambrose in Alabma...was
in Ripley co MO by 1839-40, and died there. . Ellis spelled his name on
his land records... Ellis Cammel. I found one marriage for a Cornelius
Campbell in Davidson co TN to Betsy Lenox, 23 Mar 1804...and a source that
said this Cornelius was born in Middlesex co NJ...and was the son of Ellis R
Campbell & Nancy Clawson. I can't document that claim...I only have his
marriage.
I am now trying to document the family line of Campbell's from Somerset &
Middlesex counties in NJ...which is why I asked if anyone knew of a dna for
them, or someone willing to do the dna. It's the only way I will ever be
able to decide if I should keep this Ellis R & Nancy Clawson Campbell in my
files, or omit them. My gut says it's probably them...and a branch (prob a
child of John Sr) went into VA & stayed there. I just have to look close
at RW bounty lands, and lands granted to covenators...see if any show up.

I really need info on John Campbell, born 1779 VA. He was next to
Tennessee, somewhere, then to Madison and Jackson Counties in AL. The
problems I have researching him, is that there several John Campbells all
born in VA that were in TN. My John C. had children by Aney Webster. I do
not know who his previous wives were. He is directly related to George
Campbell according to DNA results.
