I also use Handy Book for Genealogists (I have Edition 6). The edition is
not real important...the newer ones contain different helps, etc...but
county information is the same.
I have the Animap program from
http://www.goldbug.com & find that
invaluable. It allows me to put marks where an original boundary lies, or
where I believe an ancestor's land was located, and the marks stay where I
put them. I can then move forward, backwards to see where the land is
located at different times in history.

One of my favorite books that I Rely on:
Map Guide
To the
U.S. Federal Censuses,
1790 - 1920
by: William Thorndale and William Dollarhide
Cost: $ 39.95
Published by: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc.
Baltimore
By far the best money I've ever spent.
This book begins with the 1790 Census, of each and every state
as they entered the union.
It shows the Census Growth, of each state, along with the new
counties as they are formed through out the years.
Where I thought that the party I was looking up was in one
county as per the local AAA Auto Club, Maps, I found that
by looking at the year the person was born, it was in an
entirely different county. Same with marriages, and deaths.
Your library would have a copy of this also.
OR: go to your nearest LDS Family History Center, they
will have one there for you to use.
