Vicki,
Sorry to answer so late, spam filter, but I have some where in this mess
a public notice from the early 1700's where , I think , Edward Gaither
and his wife made a public announcement to such effect. I don't think
they used the term divorce but instead used something like the
dissolution of marriage bonds. These folks ran an Inn and it was there
posted. The first name of the husband I am not sure of but it is in the
Gaither papers that I have been scanning for months.

Vic,
Hey. I've not gotten back that far in my own family, though I seem to
recall something from history class about legislatures granting
divorces. Having nothing else to do, I decided to use Google to see
if I could answer your query or point you to some site that could.

Google books has The Divorce Sourcebook and sent me to this particular page:

Another mailing list had a discussion about a particular divorce and
alimony in 1753:

I'm sure that there are other sources out there. I simply did a
Google search on "Divorce 1700's" and took a look at the first page of
"hits."
I've got some old "History" magazines, and I'll see if any of them
talk about divorce in the 1700's.
It might help someone who knows more than the rest of us answer your
question if you clarified where Patrick Campbell and Elizabeth James
were before 1784, if you have any clues to that.
Best of luck!
