Thomas Campbell first appears in 1820 in Brownville twp, NY. he has 1
son under 10, 1 son 10-16, Thomas is 26-45, he has 2 daughters under
10, and his wife is 26-45.
by this census I can deduce that he was probably m. around
1804-1810.
he lives next door to Samuel Reed, a man I suspect is somehow
related but don't have enough information on, though I've been kindly
given a basic descendancy chart which includes him. no mention of a
Campbell in it. on the other side of Thomas is Azariah Sherwin, whom
I know nothing about. down the road is our Samuel Reed Campbell's
future brother in law, Jesse Stone, Jr. who is living next door to
Luther Reed, a relative of Samuel Reed. it seems the family was close
knit in NY, and a group of them, including Samuel Reed Campbell and
other members of the Stone family later removed to MI. Jesse remained
in NY.
Thomas and his family disappear after 1820, though in 1830 there is
a John, who has 2 sons under 10. he and his wife are 16-26 so he
might be the eldest son of Thomas.
where Thomas' wife and other children are in 1830, I do not know,
but assume she remarried and that they are hidden within another
family unit.
in 1840, John has added a son to his family, a George has appeared
with two sons 5-10, there's another John 70-80 with a 30-40 woman and
a 5-10 girl in his household, and our Samuel Reed Campbell appears
with 1 son under 5, 2 sons 5-10, a girl 10-15, and his wife, Mary
Kendall Stone.
so which man is related to which? is Samuel's father Thomas who died
bef 1830, or John who appears to be widowed in 1840? are John and
George his brothers? who is/are their mother(s)?
since John "Sr." does not appear until 1840 (John "Jr." appears in
1830, but no other Campbells show up in the index) if he is our
Samuel's father then tracing the ancestry back will be difficult,
both from the name and the time frame. hopefully someone can direct
me to useful information.
can anyone answer these questions?
