Hi all
I have a subscription to
Footnote.com & found this George Washington
Campbell trying to claim his father's RW pension...hope it helps someone.
I am only posting a bit of the family info, as it's a 70+ page file.
This is a letter in answer to Miss Irene SHIPP of Rome Mississippi, dated 13
Feb 1929. She had requeste 3x, the info on Charles Campbell.
Madam:
I advise you from the papers in the RW pension claim, S.1286, it appears
that Charles Campbell was born in 1759 in Augusta co VA.
While a resident of Augusta county, VA, he enlisted in 1777 and served a
little over three years as a private in Cpt David Lord's, Nathan Lamb's and
Blackwell's companies in Col Stephens' and Samuels House's VA Regiments &
was in the battles of Brandywine & Stony Point.
He moved from Augusta County to North Carolina, from there to Tennessee, and
from there to Lauderdale county, AL
He was allowed pension on his application executed 7 May 1833, while a
resident of Lauderdale Co, AL
He died Aug 29 or 31, 1843 (and a hand written notation that it was 23 Aug
1843) in Hinds county, Mississippi, leaving a widow, her name not given &
several children, the only name given is that of George W Campbell, of Hinds
co, MS.
Respectfully, Winfield Scott, commissioner.
NOW..I looked through those 70 some odd pages...and the siblings of George
are listed.
Mjr Hugh Campbell
William Campbell
George Washington Campbell (youngest son) died in 1846.
John Campbell (took over the persuing of the pension owed after GW's death)
Mary Campbell King.
Charles' widow died Sep 1843 in MS.
A letter written to the RW board (or whoever handled those things) stated
that:
Charles applied and was granted pension in Oct 1833 while he lived in
Lauderdale county AL. He was awarded 80 dollars per anum.
Charles died in Hinds county, Mississippi in Aug 1843, and that his widow
died in Sept 1843, shortly after Charles.
They left children (as stated above), and that two of these lived in MS, one
in TN, & two in the state of IL - which proof was taken in open court in
Hinds county MS (Raymond city).
Anyone related to this line?
Hope it helps someone.
Marge Campbell
still in search of good ol Ellis Cammel/Campbell b 1804 in VA.
PS...this really goes to show how families really didn't stay within 50
miles of home back in the early 1800's... they went where they had to in
order to survive & have land of their own.
