Hey Larry, we communicated years ago about our Campbells, but I'm not sure
we traded information about Loudon County and Hamilton/Beall connections.
As to Hillsborough . . . it is my understanding that Greensboro (in
Guilford County NC) was once called Hillsborough; perhaps its name was
changed because of confusion with the Hillsborough in Orange County?
I will check the Hamiltons who were related to my John Campbell and see if
they include the James Hamilton you mention. I don't believe there was a
connection between John Campbell and Aeneas, but it's certainly possible,
given their proximity. The Bealls have a way of cementing everyone together
if you go back far enough, so I'll check that. Definitely, there was a
strong Maryland connection between all of the folks around John Campbell.
Unfortunately, so far, none of them were named Campbell, so I can't trace
that ancestry (yet).
Thanks for chiming in. It's great to hear from local Campbell researchers
on these questions. It helps to have experts in the field!
Maureen

Maureen,
Don't know exactly where to start. There is a very old Hillsborough in
Orange Co, (Chapel Hill) that has historic markers about every fifty
feet going down the street. I expect that is the Hillsborough in
research. I can't remember Greensboro's name changes but it is possible.
My brickwall ancestor, Aeneas Campbell, Sr was born 1730 in ??? and died
1812 in Montgomery Co, MD. in 1757, he was the first sheriff of Loudoun
Co, VA. James Hamilton was also in the government and had business
dealing with Aeneas Sr. There is lots about both in The Historian's
Guide to Loudoun County, Virginia. Loudoun is a ferry ride from
Montgomery Co, MD. I have no records of marriages between a Campbell and
a Hamilton, at least not until next Saturday when my younger daughter is
marrying one. I really haven't looked. Aeneas Sr had a daughter Hester
that married Leven Covinton Beall in 1779 in Montgomery Co, NC. Aeneas
Jr born 1757 at Raspberry Plains in Leesburg, VA came to Iredell Co NC
in 1784. On a present day map, this looks like a long way BUT Aeneas
lived very near the county line with present day Davie Co, (then Rowan)
which is a small county which borders Forsyth and Yadkin which was also
a part of Stokes. Do you have another Aeneas? There was a Milton
Campbell that came from Stokes Co to Iredell/Davie area as the
postmaster at the County Line Post Office. I think he goes back to an
Archibald that is buries in Snow Creek Cemetery in Iredell.
Aeneas Sr was a Col in the Maryland Flying Camp. Aeneas Jr was and
Ensign. After the was a lot of his military unit moved down here with
families in tow that intermarried countless time. There are five Aeneas
descendants that have taken the DNA test. We have a marker that is
different from the most of the other Campbells, marker 26 has a value of
9. The most of the Campbells have a 11 or 12. Due to the intermarrying
of "the Maryland Colony" in Iredell Co, I am related to about all of the
group.

Larry, I would love to know about your Campbell-Hamilton-Beall
associations. Mine are in Stokes County NC during the late 1700s. Aeneas's
family lived in the next county (Surry), but I have not found a connection.
Interestingly, John Campbell did move to Surry toward the end of his life.
As to Hillsborough and Greensboro: It's my understanding (I am in CA, so
I
apologize if my information is not correct) that Hillsborough, Guilford
County, North Carolina later became Greensboro, Guilford County, North
Carolina. In its early Hillsborough incarnation, the city was a hotbed of
Regulator activity during the Revolutionary War. Interestingly, John
Campbell, born 1775, figured in one of the skirmishes of the war near
Hillsborough.
John Campbell's mother was Mary Hamilton, and when it became clear that
members
of his Campbell family were unable to care for the boy, Horatio
Hamilton, John's uncle, took him in and raised him as a son in Salem (later
Winston-Salem), Stokes (later Forsyth) County NC.

Maureen,
My ancestor, Aeneas Campbell , was associated with Hamiltons, the
Bealls and came from Maryland to NC.
I have a question about your message. "Who went to Hillsborough (Later
Greensboro)". Are you saying he went to Hillsborough , then to
Greensboro, or that Hillsborough became Greensboro?
Has anybody done DNA testing?

Hillsborough (later Greensboro) in 1774. One fathered an illegitimate son,
and the other married, took in his brother's orphaned child, then died

That group seems to have come from Frederick County, MD, based on a deed I
found for John Campbell, who was administrator of his father Matthews
estate. Matthew is listed as coming from Frederick Co MD. I think the John
I can trace to is the SON of the John of that deed.
