You may be aware that Herbert Campbell compiled genealogical tables of the
Campbell families of the Chiefly Kin earlier this century, and that these
are kept at the Court of the Lord Lyon in Edinburgh.
Last Friday I was able to inspect these documents. It appears that I'm the
first for a while, as the lady who helped me explained that she'd been
working there for 18 years and no one else had asked to see them, which was
why the books concerned were thick with dust until she cleaned them off.
The books contain family trees of various branches of the Campbell family,
indexed by place names. The trees are not exhaustive (younger sons not
always being included, for instance), but they do reach down to C20 in many
cases. The book, running to nearly 400 large pages and 400 place names, is
in two volumes, and there are three copies, all hardbound: the original
manuscript, Campbell's own typescript, and a photocopy of the latter.
Sadly, I could not make a connexion in my own family's case, but these
documents may be of great help to some. However, the only way you can see
them is to personally visit the office in Edinburgh, with a prior
appointment.
I was permitted to take a photocopy of the index pages, which as I
mentioned list about 400 places; you are welcome to email me to see if a
given place is listed.
