I am searching for the parents and siblings of John J Campbell, b.
1845/9 in SC. I find the first mention of him when his wife, Cynthia
Jane Elmore, daughter of Ellis Elmore and Eliza Ann Wilkerson of
Darlington Co, SC, joined the Wesley Chapel Methodist Chapel, near
Lydia, SC, in 1874 as Cynthia Campbell, just after they were married.
In the 1900 census of Darlington Co, SC, John states that his father
was from Ireland and his mother was from SC. There are no Darlington
Co Deeds or court records for this John J Campbell. There are no wills
that name him as an heir. They had 6 known children:
Addie Campbell, b. circa 1875, who died young.
Anna Carrie Campbell, b. 1876, d. 1936, m. Sam Albert Jackson in
Darlington Co. They lived in Timmonsville.
Annie Campbell, b. 1881, who died young in 1883.
Docia Campbell, b. 1885, d. 1906, m. A. Wiley Watford
John Ellis Campbell, b. 17 Oct 1886, d. 1 Jan 1960, m. Mary Anna Jones
and lived in Alcolu, SC.
Mary Geneva Campbell, b. 22 Oct 1891, d. in VA, m. William Riley Newell
and lived in VA.
The above John Ellis Campbell was my grandfather.
According to the Bible Record of William R Hudson, the husband of Mary
Ellis Elmore, sister of Cynthia Jane Elmore, John J Campbell's wife,
John J Campbell died 20 Jun 1911 at the age of 66, placing his birthdate
in 1845. All the census records in which he is listed shows him born in
1849. However, I have not located John in 1850-70, nor in 1910, just
prior to his death. On his son's enlistment papers of the Army Coastal
Artillery Corps, he stated that his father had lived his entire life in
Darlngton Co.
Any help on this would be appreciated.
