I have a query which I hope will connect to someone else who is researching
their Islay Campbell ancestry.
I begin with Donald Campbell who was born on Islay in 1789 or 1790 (birth
record not located despite a thorough search of all Parish records).
Donald Campbell married Margaret Gillies (b.1802 according to gravestone)
on Islay in 1822 (approx.) Again no record of the marriage uncovered
despite thorough search. Donald and Margaret made their home in Port Ellen.
They had recorded births in the Kildalton Parish as follows:
Jane - June 27, 1823. Alexander - December 6, 1824.
Ann - 1826. Colin - March 12, 1828.
Isabella - Dec 9, 1832 John - 1833
Margaret - 1835 Dugald - 1839
The family emigrated in about 1845 to Perth Co, Ontario, Canada (the
Russeldale area).
All this info came from a 1976 report from the Scots Ancestry Research
Society in Edinburgh. A great uncle of mine collected the data.
I want to try to find out more about the births and marriage of Donald
Campbell and Margaret Gillies. I also would like to find out where they
lived in Port Ellen, their parents/siblings etc..
I am living in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and am planning a visit to Islay
next year. Is there a kind soul out there who has access to any of the
applicable records and might assist in a search for further information?
Can anyone suggest further steps I might take while I am in Canada and the
best method of investigating things when I visit Islay?
Any and all contacts/advice/information most gratefully received.
David Hyde (g-grandson of an Islay Campbell)
