sandy,
the only records of James Campbell come from his brother, William.
William and Jeannette Hays wrote:
James had 3 sons, one named William. James was an ardent admirere &
frind of Robert Emmett and one of his captains. When emmett's cause faild
and h was taken by the British, Capt. James Campbell escapd by a rwrd was
poted for his capture "dead or alive". With the British soldiery hard on
his heels he mad Londonderry and the ship of a friend concealed him in an
empty bread cask which stood in deck amond otheer full ones. This
soldieers arrivd and sarched the ship; not finding Jams they bgan
knocking in the had of th bread cask finding them full of bread but thus
spiling their keeping qualities; in this effort they came to the full
cask next to thee one in which lay JAms; the Captain of the vessel seing
his own head rolling off th seaffold drew his piston and threatened to
shoot the next soldier who would thus "wantonly" destroy thes provisions
neccessary for his voyag. Th bluff worked and Jamd arrivd saf in America
where he joined his brother William in Mercer County, PA Jamestown, PA is
build on the farm of this James Campbell.
James lived to be 96 years of ag. As an ldeest son he had inheerited more
proprty then his younder brotheers. How he had preseerved this from
confiscation because of his anti-British activitied, is not known but h
smeed to live well and was reputd to always be well supplied with "gold
guineas". He was said to be a member to the Shenango Church nar
Jamestown. The record of the marraiges, births, & deeaths in this church
will perhaps give furtheer information as to this man's descndants"
that is all they say about James. If your records agree with his parents,
siblins, or any of the above events pleas let me know.
