Pat
I think we've been down part of this road before! (My email to you
dated 14 July refers.)
You have already had a helpful reply from Cathy Di Pietro, and I would
endorse her recommendation of Johnny MacKinnon's site. (Johnny spent
his formative years near Campbeltown, whereas I spent mine in
Carradale.)
Firstly, I have never heard of Orgaig. Secondly, you will see Skipness
on Johnny's map.
The parish of Kilcalmonell & Kilberry is partly in Knapdale (to the
west of Tarbert) and partly on the north-west coast of Kintyre. It
does not include Skipness and, as far as I know, never has. The
apparent contradiction could be explained if the lands of the Barony
of Skipness straddled the 2 parishes of Saddell & Skipness and
Kilcalmonell & Kilberry. If that is the case, my guess would be that
Orgaig is on the north-west coast of Kintyre, although it could of
course be in Knapdale.
I think Cathy has perhaps (understandably) confused the parish of
Kilcalmonell and Kilberry with the parish of Kilcolmkill (now
Southend) which is at the southern end of Kintyre. And the parish of
Saddell and Skipness was always thus as far as I know. Also, it is a
very common error to refer to Kintyre as the Mull of Kintyre: Kintyre
is the peninsula, and the Mull is the southern end only. (Sorry for
lecturing, Cathy!)
I am afraid I know nothing about the machinations of the aristocracy
that you asked about. My granny was a Campbell, but of Perthshire
peasant stock. We stayed clear of sasines and the like!
I hope the information on Kintyre is of some help.
