I'm looking for information on the family of the Gilbert Campbell who
married Prudence Osran. Gilbert appears to have been born in either
Scotland or Northern Ireland in about 1680. He died in Augusta County VA
in 1750.
Gilbert first appears of record in the Paxtang (or Paxton) area of
Lancaster County VA where, in 1734, he is mentioned as owning 400 acres
of land on the south side of Conodoguinet Creek, west of the Susquehanna
River.
He next appears as receiving a Borden Grant in Augusta County VA on 6
July 1742.
Finally, Gilbert's will is found in Will Book I (p294), Augusta County,
VA: 29 Aug. 1750. Gilbert Campbell's will, of forks of James River,
plantationer -- Wife: Prudence Campbell, alias Osran; son, George
(infant); son Charles (infant); dau. Elizabeth Woods, alias Campbell;
son James; dau. Prudence Hays; dau. Sarah Campbell; dau. Lattice
Campbell. Exrs: James Trimble, Thomas Stuart and Andrew Hays. Wit. James
Thompson and Allison.
According to LDS (Film 1761200) Gilbert's parents are James Campbell and
Susan Campbell. They had the following
children:
Alexander, b ABT 1682 Scotland
Elizabeth, b ABT 1688 Scotland
Gilbert, b ABT 1680 Scotland
James, b ABT 1678 Scotland
Susannah, b ABT 1686 Scotland
William, b ABT 1684 Scotland
Anne, b ABT 1692 Ireland
Mary, b ABT 1690 Ireland
Now, my questions:
1. Does anyone have any record of Gilbert's family moving from Scotland
to Ireland (Ulster Province, Northern Ireland) circa 1690, or had they
been living in Ulster prior to emigration to PA?
2. As Gilbert's sister Mary Campbell is generally reported to be the
wife of Michael Woods, does anyone have any information as to the
spouses of Gilbert's other brothers and sisters.
3. Does anyone know where in Scotland or Ulster Gilbert and Prudence
were married?
Thanks for any assistance.
