Hello Group!!!
My husband and I are taking a trip to the UK for site seeing and genealogy
research.
We are both Campbells... He through "Black" David Campbell and I from a
different line of Campbells.
All I know is that we are both Argyll Campbells supposedly... My husband
may know for sure if he is. But I have no idea about my line. Were would
the best place to look in Scotland for this information? I have the birth
place in Scotland of the Campbell that immegrated first to Canada then to
USA.
I'm also doing research on the MacFarlanes so if I could combine the two
that would be great.
Also what is the best way to approach this kind of search in Scotland???
My sister-in-law, not knowing too much of the history of the Campbells,
During a tour of a castle ( I don't know the location ) proudly exclaimed
that she was from clan Campbell. At that, the tour guide turned to her and
said "so lassie, you are a liar a cheat and a thief"... She was quite
surprised. Well, I myself would prefer to avoid a similar exchange. Was
this out of the ordinary...
And how hostile are the natives... ;)
We are also doing some reading on King Arthur and Merlin. The Books were
are currently reading are "Arthur" - by Norma Lorre Goodrich and
"Merlin" -
by Norma Lorre Goodrich. She makes a compelling argument for the Campbells
going back to King Arthur and the location well ... here is a passage from
the introduction of "Merlin"
"Large numbers of Romano-Britons had decided to remain in Britain on the
landed estates. The line of the "Roman" commanders-in-chief,
-Maximus-Constatine-Ambrosius-Uther Pendrago-Arthur, stepped in to defend
the formerly Roman forts along the two walls of defense: the Antonine to
the north (Glasgow-Edinburgh line) and Hadrian's Wall to the south... These
lands constituted Merlin's and Arthur's battleground."
I'd like to know if any one else has heard of this or has any thoughts on it.
Thanks
Jen
