F.Y.I. To All: Again, this is not about genealogy but as we are all
"family", we must look out for one another. So please, no complaints.
We received this msg the other day and although we have not checked into
it, the lesson is clear. DO NOT cooperate with someone who calls you
and asks you to buy anything, for checking account or credit card
numbers, personal information, money, or to do anything that you do not
know anything about, such as puching numbers into your phone. The phone
system has become the biggest scamming device of the modern age. If this
happens to you, hang up and immediately call the phone company to
inquire about it and to report the call. Yours Aye, Rob Campbell

Subject: phone scam
Subject: FW: Phone scam info, though you might want to know :
I received a telephone call last evening from an individual
identifying himself as an ATT Service technician who was conducting a
test on our telephone lines. He stated that to
complete the test I should touch nine (9), zero (0), the pound sign (#)
and then hang up. Luckily, I was suspicious and refused.
Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing
90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone
line, which allows them to place long distance
telephone calls billed to your home phone number. I was further
informed that this scam has been originating from many of the local
jails/prisons. I have also verified this information with UCB
telecomm, Pacific Bell, MCI, Bell Atlantic, GTE and NYNEX.
Please beware.
DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE. The GTE Security Department requested that
I share this information with EVERYONE I KNOW. PLEASE pass this on to
everyone YOU know. If you have mailing lists and/or newsletters from
organizations you are connected with, I encourage you to pass on this
information to them, too.
