Canongate was actually in Edinburgh....:) Just saying...
Samuel Campbell of Ulster County, New York (Official Family Pedigree)
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:3360230&am...
I've been actively chasing down this line andhave had a few discussions
with Robert Goodwin at byu.edu....the author of the above GEDCOM
He says he found evidence that the Robert put onboard the Henry and
Francis is indeed Robert "who serves his master Kildalvan" (according to
Archibald his father) Campbell. But he didn't cite the exact texts.
Now we have the Campbells of Texas (I presume) putting forward a Robert
of Lochfineside as our Robert... I've yet to locate such a person, but
there was a John Campbell of Loch Fyneside on the Henry and Francis.
Personally I don't care either way altohugh I see the appeal in the
Lochfynside group as their lineage is known and the Kildalvan group
dead-ends. Even the Clan historian expresses some bewilderment as to who
they were or where they came from, but of course he's speaking of the
lairds of Kildalven and not our "tenants".
It seems to me likely that they are in fact related to the lairds
because the naming between the two groups is identical.
A father Archibald with sons, laird John, Robert, and Archibald...And
our group; a father named Archibald, with sons Robert, John and
un-named...the "laird" group is born about one generation before our
group...
Well, in any case the Kildalven bit may be unprovable barring further
evidence, of which I've found some but it eliminates "laird Robert" and
not ours. Just that I found some new evidence holds out hope that the
answer is still out there somewhere.... In the meantime I've been trying
to track down this Robert of Loch Fyneside, but I've just begun that
quest...
Needless to say...I'm afraid I've not spent any time at all on this side
of the pond with this family thanks to the work of people like Robert....LOL
I ran into these Campbells looking for my Cornwall, Orange Co., New York
Garrisons....(You think Campbells are bad, what a mess that is!)
Anyway, thanks for the update on the DNA research! I take it you've been
speaking with Kevin Campbell that runs the project? That's good to know
about the Orange/Ultser group!
You wouldn't happen to know where I could get a copy of that will would
you? Or maybe a book reference that talks about it? There might be a
reference in the above GEDCOM...LOL I went straight overseas as my line
was so solidly documented already....
Robert>Samuel>Levi>Jacob>Joseph>Alden>Arthur>some other guys whose
names
start with A... me...lol Something like that... Starting with either
Jacob or Joseph they settled around Syracuse, NY and have been there
ever since...where they may have branched out to I don't know...
Seems I'm related in some way to half of Kingston Ulter's Dutch/Huguenot
citizens and half of Dutchess county's Scots/Dutch/Huguenot and possibly
German/Dutch/Huguenot (Garrisons from Orange NY and possibly NJ) residents..
Honestly I keep waiting to find out I'm my own 5th cousin or something
weird like that...LOL
As to Robert's other two sons I have no clue....but I've seen some
references to them in NJ ... which opens the door for our relations,
affectionately known as "CUZ"... possibly migrating down south y'all! (I
guess we get mail from two groups? Campbell-L and Campbell-Kids which I
gather is devoted to our southern relatives? Anyone know the answer to
that?) IIRC, John Campbell, son of Lord Neill, imigrated to Virginia
with a large group of Scots and then went up into NJ from there where he
became one of the 24 proprietors?....There's some details as to how
they spread out in NJ in the GEDCOM above...
I'm rambling so I hope that helps some cuz...:)

Thanks for posting these Campbells! Perhaps they are part of my
husband's
line and, in fact, my husband's 2x gt grandfather might have been born in
Orange Co, NY. Other experts in this line say this: Robert Campbell was
imprisoned in Canongate (Glasgow) with his brothers and banished on the ship
"Henry and Francis" to Perth Amboy, NJ in 1685. This Robert was from
Kildalvan (Kildalven or Kildalvane) in Cowal (Argyll). He had sons and we
think Samuel was one of them.
Samuel's 8 sons were born in what is today South Orange, NJ (close to
Newark). At about 55 years of age he moved from NJ to Ulster County, NY
with most of his sons and their families. During the 1755 - 1800 period his
progeny are 90% of the Campbells in Ulster County (1790 and 1800 Census).
His will of 1773 is the major written record of his existence. He died in
Montgomery, Ulster County (now Orange County), NY. Many of his 8 sons moved
out and settled across the U.S.
The yDNA says that my husband is descended from one of these sons of Samuel
or one of Robert's sons. Now I just have to do some more research to find
out which one!
