On March 6, Ruth Campbell posted a request for a look-up in Wilkes County, NC.
She asked that page 389, Sommers Twp be checked for William Campbell. If
someone has already done this look up and posted the results, please ignore
this e-mail.
Today was the first chance I've had to get to the library, but here is what I
found.
In the 1870 census of Summers (or Sommers) Twp, Wilkes County, NC, I went to
page 389 and copied the following information:
On this page, the P.O. was listed as Jarvis, NC and the census taker's name
looked like JW Hays.
Campbell, W, age 55, a white male, farmer, born in NC. According to the
column that asked if the respondent's parents were foreign born, W Campbell's
were not foreign born. According the columns about education, W Campbell
could read and write.
His wife, Gemma or Gemima (the census taker's handwriting was pretty, but not
very clear), was age 58, a white female, keeping house. She, too, was born
in NC of non-foreign parents and could read and write.
Since this didn't look like the family Ruth was looking for, I scrolled back
through the rest of Sommers Twp., looking for any Campbell, figuring I'd post
the whole township's info to the list.
There was only one other Campbell family in Sommers Twp.
On page 386, I found:
Campbell, WJ, age 40, a black male, a miller who had been born in North
Carolina of non-foreign parents. According to the education column, he could
not read or write.
His wife's name looked like Milla (but could easily have been Millie). She
was 35, a black female, keeping house. She, too, had been born in North
Carolina of non-foreign parents and she could not read or write.
They had the following children (7 daughters, 1 son):
Mary, age 16
Margaret (I think), age 14
Sarah, age 12
Martha, age 10
Ann, age 8
Amanda, age 6
Janet, age 4
and Anderson, age 2
That looked closer to the info Ruth was looking for and, Ruth, I hope this
helps your search.
Good luck and good hunting!
