My ancestor, John Campbell, born 1779 in VA lived in the Lincoln Co, TN,
Madison and Jackson Counties in AL. His last wife was Aney Jane WEbster. I
descend from his
son, George Lafayette Campbell. If anyone knows who John Campbell,s parents
were, please let me know. There are so many John Campbells, all born around
1779 that it is hard to tell one from the other.
Hi all and happy Friday the 13th;
Does anyone know where there is a copy of this book? ILL lists only
one copy in the entire world,at the Carneigie Library in Pittsburgh. It
is restricted
and therefore will not be loaned. If you are a member of this family,
I'd love to talk. Jan CAMPBELL, CARNES, CUMMINGS, LOWMAN

Indian Heritage? My Grandmother's name was Clara Campbell. She married Herbert Brubaker, they lived in Holtwood Pa, near Lancaster, Pa. She was born around 1898. I know her one sister was named Laura. She had a lot of brothers, and sisters, but I know very little because she died when she was 38. My father Dr. H Lee Brubaker never spoke much of her and now he's deceased. I know she slowly died of some kind of degernative disease causing her to not be able to move anything but her eyes. I felt she may have Indian blood and I need to know where to start.

MARRIAGE RECORDS SCARCE _?_
(http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~seky/folfoot/019.html#notice)
by Holly Timm
[originally published 6 May 1987]
Harlan Daily Enterprise Penny Pincher]
One of the major difficulties tracing a family line back is locating
marriage records before 1900. This major source for family names on the female side
can often be difficult to find if not impossible. There are several reasons
for this.
Some records have been lost over the years. Until sometime in the 1870's,
marriage records in this area were kept in the form of loose bonds and returns.
Some of these odds and ends of pieces of paper were simply misplaced, others
were turned over to the individuals for filing with pension applications.
Late in the 19th century, about 1890, all the remaining early marriages in
Harlan County were recopied by the county court clerk's office into two
marriage registers, Book A and Book One. Most of the early marriages were copied
twice. The originals were then apparently thrown away.
Other marriages, although properly performed, were never actually recorded.
It was not uncommon for a couple to be married by a traveling preacher riding
a circuit of congregations in the mountains. These circuit riders did not
always bother to drop in at the county seat and record the marriages they had
performed in that county.
Other marriages performed by the local justice of the peace were also not
necessarily turned in to the county court clerk. Accuracy and ability with
paperwork was not a requirement for the office of magistrate or justice of the
peace and some of them had to be prodded by the court to turn in any of their
papers when they were no longer in office.
Although a couple may have lived in one county, the nearest place to get
married may have been in another county or in another state. Many people from
upper Martins Fork and Cranks got married in Lee County, Va. Others from the
Letcher County area went to Wise County, Va., to be married. People on Pucketts
and Brownies Creek might have been married in Bell County, or before 1867
when Bell was formed, in Knox County.
If you are trying to trace your family, a marriage in Virginia is to be
hoped for as the names of the bride and groom's parents were recorded in most of
the Virginia records from the early years, but were not included in Kentucky
records until late in the century and even then, that part of the license
form was often not filled out.
Not all couples were legally married. Unless a couple lived near a justice
of the peace or the county seat, it was necessary to take considerable time
away from the dawn-to-dusk work of life to go in and attend to the paperwork
that many people felt unnecessary. The cash required for the license fee was
often not so easy to come by either.
Instead, some marriages were what some people call `broom-stick' marriages.
The term broomstick comes from the tradition in some areas of placing a
broomstick across the doorway of the couple's intended home. The bridal pair would
step over the stick together signifying their commitment to each other. In
their own eyes and those of their families and neighbors they were considered
married and they acted and lived as such.
This sort of marriage was not uncommon in the early years and some of these
couples were later properly married with all the paperwork which accounts for
some of the discrepancies between recorded marriage dates and the birthdates
of the oldest children. If the wife and children consistently went by the
man's surname in census and other records and a recorded marriage cannot be
found, this implies either a lost record or a `broomstick' marriage, as does
references to wife and children in deeds, wills and pension records.
Simply living together was more common in isolated frontier areas such as
Harlan than it was in areas like New England with older more civilized
settlements. But, it must be remembered that people were more casual about their
names as well and there are documented instances of children taking their
mother's surname even though their parents had been legally married. This might
occur in cases where the parents were divorced, but is also known to have
occurred when the father died when the children were young and the mother returned
to her people

Good morning to all y'all,
The other day AT...posted a suggestion that I'll put into practice.
I'll start with my brickwall...I'll start with my brickwall...<WB
have a match (close will do), or maybe you have a brickwall too.
Let's see if the YDNA will help us all out.
Kit # 72715, 67 pt test, r1b1, group 40.....traces back to:
13, 24, 14, 10, 11, 14, 12, 12, 13, 13, 30, 17, 9, 10, 11, 11, 25,
15, 19, 30, 15, 15, 17, 17, 11,
12, 19, 24, 17, 15, 18, 17, 37, 38, 12, 12, 12, 9, 15, 16, 8, 10
Charles CAMPBELL, b. abt 1730 - d. bef. 1817
m. at least 2x (jury is stillout on how many wives);
1st, 1750-1760, Elizabeth BELINDEN
(possible variant spellings--Blanton, Bellenden, Balantine)
2nd, 1800 in GA, Mrs. Richard (Milly Horn) Bailey, widow
Tradition says..."native of VA" for both Charles and Elizabeth.
So far...I've not ever found any evidence for them in VA.
Sometime before 1787, we strongly suspect a residence in the
Carolinas, probably NC. Possibly in or near...Orange Co. NC.
We can prove his residence in Wilkes and Oglethorpe Co's GA
from 1787 until 1810. After 1810...we only have the tradition of
"Charles dying in his own house on his son, Levi's, property".
Supposedly in LA...but so far, no trace has been found there.
Known children:
1. Levi (Levy, Leni) Campbell (my line)
m. Sarah WATKINS, b. 1763 Johnston Co. NC
2. Charles Campbell
3. Lorany Campbell
m. 1st, Benjamin WATKINS, widowed in 1795-96
m. 2nd, Sherwood DAVIS, in Oglethorpe Co GA 1796
Suspect also:
4. Kesiah (Keziah) Campbell, b. abt 1774 - d. abt 1806 GA
m. Moses WATKINS
Levi's line...long believed him to not only be an only child,
but the..."only child of Elizabeth Campbell".
Amazing how tight-lipped my ancestor really was. *S*
Sarah WATKINS, Benjamin WATKINS and Moses WATKINS
were all children of Reace WATKINS-Sarah BARBER who had
migrated south from VA c. 1761 to Johnston-Wake Co's NC,
then migrated south again to Wilkes-Oglethorpe Co's GA.
The chance that Keziah was a daughter of Charles...
is pretty good, but there were several other CAMPBELL's
in the areas of known residences..in the areas of kn
a niece or cousin of Charles.
So...does anyone recognize this group of CAMPBELL's??
Many thanks for your time and assistance,
Lisa

Children are Sarah Ann b.1845, Margaret 1848,Mary Jane 1850,Florinda 1853, Nancy 1855, Elisa 1858 and Ulyssis William 1861. Ulyssis m. Demaris Janr Sorrell 1867-1917. Their sons were Claude Wilbur 1885 and Rex Raymond 1893. Rex was my grandfather. Does anyone know anything on this family? I would like to kow James' parents etc. My mother was the Campbell. I am trying to locate a male cousin. Thanks, lharris
Good afternoon to all y'all,
Yesterday AT...posted a suggestion that I'll put into practice.
I'll start with my brickwall...and maybe someone will either
have a match (close will do), or maybe you have a brickwall too.
Let's see if the YDNA will help us all out.
Kit # 72715, 67 pt test, r1b1, group 40.....traces back to:
13, 24, 14, 10, 11, 14, 12, 12, 13, 13, 30, 17, 9, 10, 11, 11, 25, 15, 19, 30, 15, 15, 17, 17, 11,
12, 19, 24, 17, 15, 18, 17, 37, 38, 12, 12, 12, 9, 15, 16, 8, 10
Charles CAMPBELL, b. abt 1730 - d. bef. 1817
m. at least 2x (jury is stillout on how many wives);
1st, 1750-1760, Elizabeth BELINDEN
(possible variant spellings--Blanton, Bellenden, Balantine)
2nd, 1800 in GA, Mrs. Richard (Milly Horn) Bailey, widow
Tradition says..."native of VA" for both Charles and Elizabeth.
So far...I've not ever found any evidence for them in VA.
We strongly suspect a residence in the Carolinas, probably NC,
sometime before 1787. Probably in or near...Orange Co. NC.
We can prove his residence in Wilkes and Oglethorpe Co's GA
from 1787 until 1810. After 1810...we only have the tradition of
"Charles dying in his own house on his son, Levi's, property".
Supposedly in LA...but so far, no trace has been found there.
Known children:
1. Levi (Levy, Leni) Campbell (my line)
m. Sarah WATKINS, b. 1763 Johnston Co. NC
2. Charles Campbell
3. Lorany Campbell
m. 1st, Benjamin WATKINS, widowed in 1795-96
m. 2nd, Sherwood DAVIS, in Oglethorpe Co GA 1796
Suspect also:
4. Kesiah (Keziah) Campbell, b. abt 1774 - d. abt 1806 GA
m. Moses WATKINS
Levi's line...long believed him to be an only child.
Amazing how tight-lipped my ancestor really was. *S*
Sarah WATKINS, Benjamin WATKINS and Moses WATKINS
were all children of Reace WATKINS-Sarah BARBER who had
migrated south from VA c. 1761 to Johnston-Wake Co's NC,
then migrated south again to Wilkes-Oglethorpe Co's GA.
The chance that Keziah is a daughter of Charles...
is pretty good, but there were several other CAMPBELL's
in the areas of known residences...so she could also be
a niece or cousin of Charles.
So...does anyone recognize this group of CAMPBELL's??
Many thanks for your time and assistance,
Lisa

I am glad to see someone sorting out all the Campbells in Missouri. There
seem to be several completely different lines that emigrated to Missouri. Now
if someone could just figure out which Campbell line my daughter's ancestor,
John M. Campbell (1800-1883), fits into, I could break down a brick wall. He
seems to be a contemporary of both Henry Campbells mentioned.

No, I don't know what the M stands for, unfortunately. I know a lot about
his life in Missouri and his descendants, but almost nothing about him.
Censuses say he was born in North Carolina. Two other researchers think he
and his first wife came from Rowan Co, NC. His father, Michael C. Campbell
(b. abt 1769 in ???, died 11 Apr 1847 in Lafayette Co, MO), is buried next
to John and his 2nd wife Melvina Grainger in Stapp Cemetery, Lafayette Co,
MO.
John Marion Campbell sounds familiar to me, although he is not in my
database. Let me ponder him awhile.

Hi, A.T.,
Lafayette Co, MO, is the stomping ground of my adopted daughter's birth
family, headed by John M. Campbell (b. 2 Jan 1800 in North Carolina, d. 17
Sep 1883 in Lafayette Co, MO). I have a lot of unrelated Campbells in my
database.
I looked for the Campbell names you mention below. Nothing jumps out as a
lead for you. I do have a Henry Campbell (b.18 Jul 1799 in Virginia, d. 5
Apr 1873 in Lafayette Co, MO. This Henry married Nancy Wilda Ashburn and
had a son named Aaron G. Campbell (b. 10 Oct 1827 in Lafayette Co, MO, d. 19
Aug 1913 in Lafayette Co, MO). These Campbells are buried in Campbell
Cemetery, Odessa Hills Rd, Lafayette Co, MO.
If you think this family could be a lead for you, let me know and I will see
what else I have on them.
