Hello,
is there another list with Campbell related material?
I remember a lot of posts from Diarmid with good local and clan history on
it but this list seems to be almost exclusively American geanoligical
related (not that there is anything wrong with that at all).
I'd be grateful for any advice.
regards

Hello
Your local library has access to Heritage Quest - it has online census and
other books. They will give you a code to use from home.
Ancestry has lots of information, but you have to pay for it.
Latter Day Saints has a free site - I don't remember the address - maybe
google it??
Rootsweb has free information - but like Ancestry you don't know how accurate
it is.
My cousin even wrote a book with bad information in it.
Rootsweb has a free good link to Social Security Index and other free sites.
Cyndislist.com is also a good site to check out.
If nothing pops up you can go - aska librarian and they will do local
research and email it to you for free. There is also a national archive site you can
get free information from.
Hope some of these help. I have been trying to locate my brick wall Campbell
for years now -- Chester Walter Campbell b 1895 in Ind and worked for the
Railroad - they don't want to give any information. He was my mother-in-law's
father and he disappeared - she died this last year not knowing what happened to
him. I am sure she knows now.

Hello Corinne,
Here is some advice for your research:
Get yourself to www.ancestry.com It is true it is a FEE website, but they
do offer a free 14 day trial, or you can find access for free in many public
libraries. So check around, as to WHERE you can get connected to their
database.
I don't have ancestry, but a while back, they offered a 3 day FREE period to
folks, as an promotion.
They have there the census reports for the years of 1851, 1861, 1871 in
England. The first 2 census years your ancestors would have been single and
either with parents, or out working alone.
Why don't you first find your couple in 1871, this census will tell you
their age/birth year, and the place they were born at, the actual city and
county. Using that info you can work backwards to find them when they were
still with their parents and siblings.
I did this recently, so I know it can work for you.
If you do find a tie to Scotland, www.scotlandspeople.com
This also is a FEE website, they have birth, marriage, death, and census
records. These are the actual GOVERNMENT records. They offer the SEARCH
feature for free, but to see the actual image, you must pay online. This is
an excellent website, and I believe that they sent me a notice that they
have changed the way you can pay, so that you can actually send in money as
opposed to paying online. I think I remember that.
I also recommend www.familysearch.org They had actually marriages records
listed for the people I was looking for. For example, the LDS church went
to all the various churches in England and microfilmed the church registers.
So they have records (some of which) are based on actual events and not
hearsay.
Lastly, there are mailing lists which correspond to the various COUNTY
locations in England. I might be a good idea to subscribe to the place they
married out, or similar location tied to them. By posting a query there,
you might find researchers who will share more information, and share more
resources for research.
Best regards,
Lilly Martin

I have some information about a Mathew Campbell born about 1803 in North Carolina and died 8 May 1866 in Massac County, Illinois. There is no information as to his wife but he did have a son named Andrew B. Campbell born 24 Aug 1834 in Illinois and died 27 Feb 1916 in Massac County, Illinois. Andrew married Louisa A Johnson and they had a son named Dick M. Campbell was born 1863 in Illinois and died in Illinois unknown. Dick M. Campbell married Alice Findley and they had a daughter named Clara Campbell born 12 Sep 1898 and died 30 July 1937 both in Karnak, Pulaski County County, Illinois. Clara Campbell married my Grandfather Charlie Housewright. My father was Delbert Harold Housewright Senior born 31 Oct 1917 and died 30 Jan 1989 in Paducah, Mccracken County, Kentucky.
Mathew is my 3rd Great Grandfather and Andrew is my 2nd Great Grandfather Dick is my 1st Great Gandfather, Clara is my Grandmother.
What I am trying to find out is who was Mathew married to and if Andrew had any siblings? It seems to me that back in that time families were a lot larger than just one male child. Also could anyone help me find out who Mathew's father was, or at least point me in the right direction so I can find him? Thank you for any assistance in my endeavor.
Lisa

A visit to Inveraray, and the castle, should be a must - the capital of the
Campbells.
North of that is Kilchurn Castle, the ancient seat.
South of that is Cowal and thew ruins of Dunoon Castle and the partially
reconstructed carrick Castle; all Campbell country.
Then there is the east and the Breadalbane areas including the ruins of
Finlarig Castle.
There is just so much to visit, and in fact the whole of Argyllshire will
give you something - and not a tourist shop mentioned so far!
have a nice trip

Catherine,
Be sure and visit Inveraray Castle in Inveraray, the seat of Clan Campbell. Inveraray is a lovely little town, on Loch Fine.
