There were 2 men named George Campbell, both lived in Amherst Co VA as of
1777, and both were of a similar age bracket.
One man lived in ROCKFISH, and was married to Margaret, and he wrote his
will in 1776, and he died in 1777. This man had a witness for his will, who
was named Thomas Pannet. This man Thomas Pannet might have been spelled
also as Thomas Pannell. In one document he is spelled Pannet, and another
Pannell, I think the differences might be due to the old faded records, and
the old fashioned handwriting.
This man George Campbell must have been in the Continental Army, and was
declared as Dead in 1777. The Revoultionary War records state that there
were 2 men named George Campbell, both in the Revolutionary War, both from
Amherst Co VA.
Whereas one George Campbell was present and on a muster roll as of December
1777, under Benjamin Taliaferro, the other man in 1777 was called Dead.
The man who was still alive and on the muster roll in 1777, was George
Campbell born about 1743, and he died in service of his country in 1784. He
was son of George Campbell and Caty of Amherst Co VA.
Whereas George Campbell and Margaret lived in Rockfish, George and Caty
lived on both sides of the Piney River, on lands which sat in both Amherst
Co and what is today known as Nelson Co VA.
The man named George Campbell, married to Margaret, in 1776 when he wrote
his will, named his eldest son as John Campbell. This John Campbell must
have been LESS than 21 years old in 1777 when he died, because the
courthouse in Amherst recorded a guardianship case for "John Campbell,
infant orphan of George Campbell, deceased, chose Thomas PANNELL as
guardian".
I belive Thomas Pannet of the 1776 will of George Campbell, husband of
Margaret, who was a witness of the Will, is the same man appointed to be
guardian of the John Campbell, infant son of George Campbell.
In Legal terms, a minor is an INFANT, meaning in the year 1777 any person
born in 1757 or later would be legally an INFANT, not able to inherit
property, or enter into legal contracts, without a duly appointed court
guardian. In this case a Thomas Pannet-Pannell was appointed to care for
the legal interests of John Campbell b. ???after 1757, who was son of George
Campbell who died in 1777.
I believe that we must re-consider that AGE of George Campbell who married
Margaret, prehaps he was not as OLD as we thought. His eldest child was
Catherine born 1745 Albemarle Co VA, and he might have beem 20 to 30 years
of age at the time, basically speaking, so let's consider his birth year to
possibly be 1715 to 1725, possibly. We have long thought his wife Margaret,
who out lived him and remarried later to John Henderson, to have been born
about 1725.
This would mean that George Campbell married to Margaret was about the same
age as George Campbell who married Caty, and both men lived in Amherst Co
VA.
Best regards,
Lilly Martin

Would you be kind enough to provide your ancestry down from Ambrose. I have
two Ambrose Campbells in my database and can't quite figure out where you
fit in to my lineages, if at all. My Campbell ties are via marriage only
into the Coffey families of Amherst/Nelson County, VA.

In the book, called Amherst Co VA in the Revolution, by Leonora Higginbotham
Sweeney, on page 78, is a John Campbell, infant orphan of George Campbell,
deceased, chose Thomas Pannell guardian.
Do we assume that George Campbell has been killed, or died of injuries,
recieved in the Revolutionary War, and has left a monor son name John
Campbell?
Which George Campbell would this possibly be?
The George Campbell, who died in 1777, was married to Margaret, and did live
in Amherst Co VA, and did have a son John Campbell, however the children of
George and Margaret would have all been grown adults when he died in 1777.
I think that George Campbell who married Margaret would have been a older
man, not involved in the Rev War, because of his age.
But this George Campbell, who died in 1777, and married to Margaret, diud
have a son named George Campbell (Jr.). Is this the man who was killed, or
died of injuries, from service in the Revolutionary War, and he left a son
named John Campbell, who was under the legal guardianship of Thomas Pannell?
Does anyone recognise the name Thomas Pannell? He would have to be either a
brother inlaw, or some close relationship, to have been awarded guardianship
of John Campbell.
Can anyone explain this story? Any ideas? Has anyone before looked at that
book mentioned, and thought about this? Mr. Bess, a descendant of George
and Caty, has been working on the 2 George Campbells who both served in Rev
War from Amherst Co VA.

According to the research by Mr. Bess, who is a descendant of George and
Caty Campbell of Amherst Co VA, he finds there were 2 men named George
Campbell, who both served in the Revolutionary forces.
George Campbell, who married Elizabeth, he was son of George and Caty
Campbell of Amherst Co VA.
He served under Capt Benjamin Taliferro and was listed on the payroll of
December 1777.
There was another man also named George Campbell, who was dead as of 1777,
and had left an infant son named John Campbell, who was placed under the
legal guardianship of Thomas Pannell. Who was this man? Was he the George
Campbell, who married Margaret, who died in 1777? But his son John would
not have been an infant in 1777, he was a full grown adult. Was it George
Campbell, Jr. , s/o George and Margaret Campbell, of Amherst Co VA?
Is the reason we have no data for the man named George Campbell, s/o George
and Margaret, because he died young? Perhaps during or because of Rev War
battle? He served on VA Continental Line.
If anyone has additional info, or corrections, or comments, please post
here.

Hello to all interested in the Woodson name:
The WOODSON name might go back to honor a Dr. John WOODSON, who was the
FIRST Doctor to land in Virginia.
Dr. John Woodson b. 1585 Devonshire, England. Married Sara, set sail from
England to Jamestown, VA on Jan 29, 1619, upon the ship "George". Also upon
board was the New Governor of Virginia Sir George Yeardley and about 100
passengers.
Dr. John Woodson had 2 sons, John Woodson and Robert Woodson. On April 18,
1644 Dr. John Woodson was killed by Native Indians, but his wife hid the 2
boys, and they survived.
Many of the people who carry the WOODSON name are decendants of those 2
boys: John and Robert in Colonial Virginia.
My grandfather was Bill Mimms, s/o Gideon Mason Mimms, s/o Drury Shadrach
Woodson Mimms, who was born in Goochland Co VA, but later went to settle in
Russellville, Logan Co KY.
Drury Shadrach Woodson Mimms had a brother named John Wilson Mimms, and he
left Logan Co KY before the Civil War to settle in Missouri, and long with
another family from Russellville, KY. This other family was the Reverend
Robert Sallee James, who had a son named Jesse WOODSON James.
Jesse Woodson James (the bank robber) married his cousin Zeralda Amanda
Mimms, d/o John Wilson Mimms. This made my great grandfather the cousin of
Mrs. Jesse James.
The use of the name Woodson is both the James and Mimms families, who both
started out in cvolonial Virginia, was due to honoring the ancestry of Dr.
John Woodson.
According to my cousin Mike, who is a third generation Doctor in Alabama,
and a descendant of Dr.John Woodson, he feels that Dr. John Woodson is the
FIRST Doctor to arrive in America. I suppose he is correct, but I have not
researched it enough to know.
I do have a book about the Woodson ancestry, in the earliest generations,
and going down through my own Mimms family, when an Elizabeth Woodson
married a Mimms, and thus the name entered into our line in Virginia.
For a complete BOOK on the Woodson genealogy, www.willowbendbooks.com does
have one, my cousin ordered it several years ago, written by a Henry Morton
Woodson of Memphis, TN.
Hoep this helps,
Lilly Martin

I am looking at a list of all Campbell marriages in VA, from county sources,
official records. But first I must say that this list is not 100% complete,
because many researchers have dug thru actual courthouse marriage books, and
found marriages which never did show up in my list, and I can not tell you
why. But I guess my list is fairly correct. There are some name
mis-spellings, but for the most part it should be fairly relaible.
The source of my list is: VA state library, Richmond VA. This is on
microfilm, and I 'think' the LDS (Family History Centers) would have it
also, so you could try your local FHC nearest you, and ask to rent a
microfilm of VA marriages.
My list is specific to CAMPBELL men and CAMPBELL women only, no other
surnames, and the researcher who sent it to me is dead now, so I can't ask
HOW did she specifically get the Campbell names, but perhaps the microfilm
is listed by Alphabet? In that case you can get all Campbell names.
Catherine Campbell, youngest daughter of George and Caty Campbell of Amherst
Co VA should have been married in AMHERST Co VA if she married prior to
1808. If she married later then possibly she married in Nelson Co.
The reason I mention the AREA or COUNTY she would have need to marry in, is
by the law and custom of the state of Virginia, a Bride must marry in the
COUNTY where she lives permanently.
We know that George and Caty Campbell lived in Amherst Co VA, but had land
on both sides of the Piney River, meaning as of 1808 his original land would
have been both Amherst Co and Nelson Co.
George Campbell died in 1791, did his daughter Caterine Campbell marry AFTER
he was dead? In this case, her father wouldn't have signed for her, but one
of her many brothers probably did. Did Catherine Campbell remain in Amherst
Co VA area? Or did she move away with one of her brothers as guardian
until she married?
Here are the name on my list, for a Catherine Campbell, married in the
Amherst and Nelson Co area:
Charles H. Mayo 2-20-1847 Nelson Co
Cornelius Campbell 9-23-1816 Nelson Co (she is d/o Henry, d/o George and
Caty)
Garland Moore 12-20-1819 Amherst Co
James Ramsey 1-3-1805 Amherst Co (this is William James Ramsey, m. Catherine
d/o James Campbell, Sr)
John Hall 9-12-1794 Rockbridge Co (I included this one, because several of
the brother's of Catherine Campbell did go to Rockbridge Co, which is next
door to Amherst and Nelson Co area)
Peter Cash 10-4-1824 Amherst Co
Anyone know who these various Catherine Campbell names are?
Best regards,
Lilly Martin
Let's discuss Peter Campbell, and other Campbell names in Amherst Co VA.
Catherine Campbell, married Lewis Mays, 2-17-1800 Amherst Co VA, marriage
register 1, page 141.
Witness is Peter Campbell.
Ceremony by Rev. James Floyd.
(this above record is from the research of Katie Chittum, who is a George
Campbell researcher)
Researchers have said that this above Catherine Campbell was the daughter of
George Campbell b. about 1720 died 1791 Amherst Co VA. He is the man who
married Catherine, aka Caty.
However, it appears this is NOT the case, please read on.
Robert Mays married Betsey Campbell, spinster, 12-16-1800 Amherst Co VA.
Tandy Campbell surety, consent of her father Ambrose Campbell.
Ceremony by James Boyd (Minister of Religion)
This information comes from the research of Phyliss P., who is a member of
this mailing list.
Phyliss P. researchers the line of Henry Campbell and his wife Charity of
Amherst Co VA. There has never been any proof or story of any connection
between George and Caty Campbell of Amherst Co VA, and Henry and Charity
Campbell of Amherst Co VA. They simply both lived in the same area, and
both were named Campbell. Henry Campbell was born in Scotland, and he was
an immigrant, but we do not know where George Campbell was born. We have
not done a comparison of the DNA of the line of Henry to George.
Henry and Charity Campbell had a son named Ambrose Campbell b. 1740 Scotland
died 1811 Nelson Co VA. He left a Will naming his wife Margaret and
children.
His children were named: PETER; Lucy; Rachel; Frances; Tandy; Elizabeth;
Polly.
Peter Campbell , s/o Ambrose, s/o Henry and Charity Campbell of Amherst Co
VA, was born in the time frame of 1760-1775. He was the Eldest son.
The 1810 census at Nelson Co VA lists PETER Campbell and Ambrose Campbell,
and these 2 men were Father and Son.
As far as I can tell, there was ONLY one man in the area, at this same time
frame, which was named PETER Campbell.
Here is a list of official Marriage records, from county sources, for the
name PETER Campbell:
Peter Campbell m. Lucy Jarrett 2 Oct 1809 Franklin Co VA
" " Sally Settels 17 Jan 1809 Nelson Co VA**
" " Mary Hundley 17 Dec 1816 Essex Co VA
" " Elizabeth F. Magan 25 Nov 1839 Nelson Co VA **
" " Louisa M. Cooper 30 Aug 1845 Franklin Co VA
PETER Campbell was the WITNESS to 2 marriages in Amherst Co VA, both in the
year of 1800, and both involving a female named Campbell and a male named
MAYS.
Were these 2 females sisters? Or cousins?
How does Catherine Campbell relate to Betsey (Elizabeth) Campbell, d/o
Ambrose Campbell?
Did Ambrose Campbell have 1 additional daughter, named Catherine, who
married in 1800, but was dead prior to 1811 when he namned his children in
his will?
Is Peter Campbell the older brother of both Catherine Campbell and Betsey
Campbell?
Now let's go back to the man named George Campbell, married to Caty, in
Amherst Co VA. He did have a daughter named Catherine Campbell, and it is
thought she was the youngest of all his children. Reseachers had said this
Catherine Campbell was married to a RAMSEY, but that has been proven false
and I will set forth the proof of that. Then Katie Chittum found the 1800
marriage of Catherine Campbell to Lewis Mays, and that became the prook of
the marriage of the daughter of George and Caty. But from the marriage
record being signed by PETER campbell, this would show a CONNECTION to the
family of Ambrose Campbell, s/o Henry and Charity Campbell, so this would
tend to show this marriage was NOT connected to George and Caty Campbell's
family line.
Concerning the Catherine Campbell who did indeed marry a man named RAMSEY:
Catherine Campbell was born about 1778, she died before 10-14-1852, she
married William James Ramsey on Jan. 3, 1805 in Amherst Co VA. The marriage
record states her father is JAMES Campbell. This James Campbell, Sr was
born about 1750, and lived in 1815 in the Nelson Co VA area, but by 1820 he
and others had moved to Alabama. This James Campbell, Sr was married to
Mary SMITH, d/o Abraham Smith, a Bavarian immigrant.
In a court document, Ambrose Campbell, s/o Edward Campbell, s/o George
Campbell (m. Caty), called this same James Campbell, Jr as "Cousin Jimmy".
Was this just a term meaning he was friendly and well aquainted with him, or
was he hinting at a real blood relationship?
All of the above info on James Campbell, Sr and Mary Smith family has been
given to me from the research of Mr. Lynden Harris, and some from Carol
Harlow, both are members of this mailing list.
In conclusion: we do NOT know who is the husband of Catherine Campbell, the
youngest child of George and Caty Campbell of Amherst Co VA.
We do NOT know the exact identity of Catherine Campbell, who married Lewis
Mays, but apparently she had a close tie to PETER Campbell, s/o Ambrose, s/o
Henry and Charity Campbell of Amherst Co VA.
If anyone sees some mistakes, or has further info and comments, please reply
here on the list.
Best regards,
Lilly Martin
For whatever it's worth, my great grandfather was named Hubert Cabell
Campbell (b. 1882 in Nelson County), presumably named after one of those
Nelson County Cabell's.

Subject: Re: [CAMPBELL] Cabell on 1810 Nelson co VA census
Marge;
I have been working on compiling a listing of "early settlers" in Old
Albemarle (Amherst and Nelson Counties) that "took up land" prior to
1761.
The basic information to make this listing was obtained from the notes
and
files of Alexander Brown, Esq, and historian that I found at the
University
of William & Mary, Williamsburg. Brown, a Cabell relative, spent most
of
his entire life researching and writing the book "The Cabells and their
Kin". Brown was first cousin to and married Cabell Sisters (2). He
did
most of his work at the University of Va where he had access to all the
Albemarle County records, land surveys, etc.
Below is an extract of information on the Cabells that I have completed.
15. 16, 270 acres - Cabell, Dr William, in 1735, entered all the low
grounds on both sides of the Fluvanna (James) river, commencing 1 ½
miles
below the mouth of Swann Creek (in Nelson county) and continuing there
up
the said river 1 ½ miles above the mouth of Fishing (now Allens) Creek
(in
Amherst County), and including all the large Islands in the River. In
all,
6, 320 acres along the river as it meanders about 22 miles. This I am
very
sure was the first land taken up in Amherst County. The survey was not
made
until 1737 and even then there were no neighbors. Dr Cabell was absent,
in
England, from 1735 to 1741. After his return he made various entries in
Old
Amherst, Buckingham, Appomatox and Bedford. He was born 9 March 1700 in
Warminister, England and died 12 april 1774 in Warminister, Old Amherst
County, Virginia. He was the "founder" of the Cabell family of
Virginia.
His eldest son:
16. 12,560 acres - Cabell, Colonel William born (13 March 1730 and
died
23 March 1798) patended a good deal of land in Old Amherst and bought a
good
deal more, as most of the best land was entered when he came of age.
During
his life he owned over 60,000 acres; but not more than 30,000 acres at
any
one time, I think. He filled nearly every office in the government of
the
county and many of the most important office of the government of the
state.
17. Unk acres - Cabell, Joseph Colonel, the 2nd son of the Doctor
William Cabell, (born 8th September 1733, died 1 March 1798), owned
lands in
Old Amherst as did his brothers, Colonel John and Colonel Nicholas
Cabell,
but I am warned by the rapidly increasing length of this article, to
curtail
my sketches. I will say however that my notes regarding these Cabells
are
quite full and interesting.

Thanks for the WOODSON info - can you tell me what state you are talking
about?
Am I correct in assuming Virginia?
My 3rd great grandfather was born in one of the Carolina's in 1787 so the
family was long gone from the Old Dominion in the late 1780's.
Lewis Woodson CAMPBELL's parents were Martin Cashion CAMPBELL and Sara
Elizabeth HUDSON. They married in Green County, Illinois then moved on to
Missouri.

Cashion CAMPBELL (1814-1850) and great, great, great granddaughter of
Darnel/Darneil/Darnal/ Daniel CAMPBELL (1787-1860) (veteran of the War of 1812 and
fought with Capt. Abraham Allen's Tennessee Militia) who was born in
North/South Carolina, married in Montgomery County, Tennessee
and died in Adair County, Missouri.
Just a long shot. The area just north-west of Lowesville in which Piney
River Baptist Church sits is called Woodson and once had a post office at the
turn of the 1900s. It was a booming logging town. Named for a Dr. Woodson
that lived in the area, I understand. Maybe your name harkens back to this
area!. Lots and lots of Campbells here.
Hello David,
Would you happen to have those Campbell names from the roll? Or if you have
copied down some of the names, partially?
I just think it would be good to have a LIST of Campbell names listed in the
Indian Rolls. This subject comes up every now and then, and it would be
great info to have on hand to help others when the need arises.
If you do have some info please post it. If not, I will make a point of
doing this, "One Day", on my list of things to do.
Best regards,
Lilly Martin

My great grandfather was Lewis Woodson CAMPBELL, born 1846 in Missouri and
died 1933 in Missouri.
Does anyone have any knowledge of a Woodson connection to the CAMPBELL name?
I'm just searching for clues and hoping this middle name will provide
answers to his ancestry.
THANKS!
