It has happened!! A stop light has been installed in Nelson County. It is located at the junction of US 29 and the entry to Food/Lion/McDonalds shopping mall on the west and Lovingston proper on the east. The light is blinking caution now but is prepared to go fully operational. There is a 60MPH speed limit sign at this same junction. Kinda stupid I would think!! BH
They key to finding out which Campbell is Jess Willard's biological father, I believe, will be found by finding out more about this David Campbell. George Campbell and Wilrose Campbell apparently have nothing to do with Jess "Jack" Willard at all.
I managed to trace David back another decade, no thanks to him. He went by his middle name...
On the 1900 census, David L. Campbell appeared as Lawrence (or Laurence)
Campbell, most likely his middle name:
1900 census
Lawrence (or Laurence) Campbell, 26, born in August 1873
Rosa J. Campbell, 21, born in Oct. 1878
(married 4 years)
Sparta, Indiana
I also found a marriage record for David L. in 1896:
Marriage record:
Rosa J. Green married David Lawrence Campbell on Jan. 28, 1896 in Noble Co., Indiana.
So, Rosa J.'s maiden name is Green, not McDowell. This makes sense after looking over the probate record I posted earlier again.
Sarah A. McDowell died on Aug. 10, 1922 (Fd. on Aug. 26, 1922). Children: James C. Green, Rosa J. Campbell, Erma Nay, Johnsa Willard, Lizzie Winsor, Cleveland.
I guess Sarah must have remarried a man named McDowell before she died. I overlooked that Sarah has a son named Green. Rosa J. Green married David L. Campbell, and Johnsa Green married George E. Willard.
We know that Jess "Jack" Willard was a son of a Campbell, but obvioiusly not David L. Campbell, because it showed Jess as his nephew. This means that he must be the son of one of David L.'s brothers or sisters. The 1890 census doesn't exist, so we have to jump back 20 years to 1880. That's fairly difficult. Ideally, we need to find a death certificate for David L. Campbell, and find out his parent's names. That would help us identify his brothers and sisters in 1880.
I did find a Lawrence Campbell, age 6, in 1880, in Nappanee, Elkhart, Indiana, but there's no guarantee its David L. Campbell. This is the family in 1880:
Isaiah Campbell, 41, carpenter
Levina Campbell, wife, 36
Mary A. Campbell, daughter, 17
Viola E. Campbell, daughter, 15
Samuel Campbell, son, 12
Lawrence Campbell, son, 6
Wellington Campbell, son, 4
Cendora (sp.?) Campbell, daughter, 1
Elenora Campbell, daughter, 1
If we can show somewhere that Isaiah and Levina are David L.'s parents, we can start trying to determine if Samuel or Wellington had any children. Wellington is shown as a boarder on the 1900 census, living in Chicago, Illinois. I couldn't track down Samuel, as the name is too common.

I'm researching the family of John N. Campbell. He was born about 1812 in TN.
He married Minerva Jones (d/o William Jones and Mary/Polly Haw) Jan 2, 1833 in Sumner Co. TN.
John is listed in the 1840 Davidson Co. TN census and the 1850 Robertson Co. TN
census. John died about 1855. His wife, Minerva, is listed as a widow in the 1860 and 1870
Sumner Co. TN census.
John and Minerva had the following children:
1. James Taylor Campbell b abt 1834 married Mary Lydia Smith Dec 16, 1856 in Davidson Co. TN
2. William W. Campbell b abt 1835 married Talitha Elizabeth Jarrell on Nov 5, 1857 in Sumner Co. TN
3. George Clay Campbell b Feb 24, 1837 married Lucinda Branham on May 11, 1861 in Sumner Co. TN
4. Sarah "Sally" Campbell b abt 1838
5. Laurinda M. Campbell b Nov 17, 1839 married James M. Wells on Dec 26, 1863 in Sumner Co. TN
6. Nancy Jane Campbell b abt 1843 married William M. Ellis on Feb 4, 1864 in Sumner Co. TN
7. Ellen Catherine Campbell b Nov 1844 m1-Joseph W. Leggett on Nov 9, 1864 Davidson Co. TN
m2- Overton Bee Anderson on Aug 12, 1871 in Sumner Co. TN
8. John Campbell b abt 1847
9. Daniel Jones Campbell b Jan 16, 1849 married Sarah Ann Cook on Dec 6, 1871 Sumner Co. TN
10. Minerva Tennessee Campbell b abt 1851
Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,

Thank you for that information on my grand father. The more I learn
about him the better. He died when I was 19 and I didn't get to know
him as a child seeing he lived in Indiana and I lived in Connecticut.

This is very perplexing to me... how someone goes from ________ Campbell to Jess L. Willard. You'd think that the adopting parents would have at least kept the child's original first name. Anyway, I'll keep you updated on my progress, if any.

I won't bother you with *minor* details like this anymore today, but I did run across something a few minutes ago...
Indiana Probate record:
Sarah A. McDowell died on Aug. 10, 1922 (Fd. on Aug. 26, 1922). Children: James C. Green, Rosa J. Campbell, Erma Nay, Johnsa Willard, Lizzie Winsor, Cleveland.
This means that Johnsa Willard, George E. Willard's wife, and Rosa J. Campbell, David L. Campbell's wife, were SISTERS. THAT explains why he remained close to his biological family...because he was adopted by another FAMILY MEMBER! It appears that he was basically shuffled around between relatives.
We also know that Johnsa was still alive in 1922, the year before your grandfather was born. So, my theory that George and Johnsa Willard adopted him, then she died and they had to give him to another relative, is still a strong possibility.
Johnsa McDowell m. George E. Willard
Rosa J. McDowell m. David L. Campbell

Steven:
Thank you for the information! That'll certainly help in the long run.
Basically, I asked the question because I have been desperately looking
for information on my grand father. Unfortunately, I have waited way to
long to get into finding out about my family history and those who would
have any information on him don't remember. The hard part is that he
was adopted. I have asked a question here before with little results so
I have done more digging on my own. His adopted name was Jess Willard.
My aunt (who knows the most) said that she knows his last name WAS
Campbell and that people called him Jack. Also that his biological
father was George Campbell of an unknown area. Here's the information I
know. My grand father was born May 13, 1923, location: Unknown. He is
not yet listed in the 1930 census under his adopted father George
Willard. And the only Campbell born in Indiana in 1923 with a father of
George Campbell is Wilrose Campbell. This also looks promising because
George Willard is listed as living in Indianapolis at the same time that
George Campbell and Wilrose Campbell are listed as living in
Jeffersontown Indiana which is only separated by 50 - 100 miles. This
looks promising. However with no where to go from there. I was just
hoping that someone here would have Wilrose Campbell in their genealogy
with more information to go on. Again. Thank you for your help. This
will go a long way once I finally find out if Wilrose Campbell is, in
fact, my grand father.

David

Is anyone researching the family of JAMES CAMPBELL who died circa 1795 in
Lee Co, VA? His wife, CATHERINE CAMPBELL, died circa 1805 in Lee Co, VA.
Their son, William was born in 1774 and moved to Madison Co, KY, where he
married Susannah Hawkins in 1795. They moved to Middle Tennessee by 1805.
When William and Susannah Campbell sold their share of the land owned by
James and Catherine Campbell in 1805, the Lee County, VA deeds mentioned
Powell River and Poor Valley Knob. The deeds also show the Campbell land
adjoined that of Joseph Martin, William Dean, and Hugh Campbell.
Can anyone help with this lineage or with information about this geographic
area in Lee County, Virginia?

Dear Campbell researchers of Pennsylvania families,
This family is NOT my own family, nor connected, but it is a community from
which my grandmother Minnie Short comes from. This is Cambria Co PA, which
is basically South West PA, the Johnstown, PA area. This was almost
exclusively Roman CATHOLIC families from England, Germany, and Ireland
mainly. Much later some protestants came into settle.
Just wanted to pass this family on in case it helps anyone.

Hello Everyone,
Here is Gen. 3 as you can see I have so very little of the children and would welcome anything anyone is willing to share on any of the lines I have posted and more than willing to share what I have.
On George Lewis Civil War pension papers that are dated Oct. 11, 1897 he says he was in the 115 Regt. also he gives the names of his 4 wives and children up to this time and Mahala Williams isn't one of them I think this is the wife of a cousin or son or some other family member. On George death cert. it has no wife.
Generation No. 3
4. GEORGE LEWIS3 NICHOLS (THOMAS P.2, WILLIAM1) was born November 02, 1829 in Fayette, Illinois, and died October 22, 1900 in Richland, Illinois. He married (1) JAN HOLMAN December 07, 1848 in Shelby County, Illinois. She was born Abt. 1827 in Shelby, Illinois. He married (2) JOANNAH ROARK September 27, 1853 in Illinois. She was born Abt. 1832 in New York, and died December 28, 1878 in Old Mode, Illinois (still looking for her grave.). He married (3) MAHALA WILLIAMS October 04, 1896(I think this is wrong dose anyone have this also?.) She was born Abt. 1875 in Fayette, Illinois. He married (4) REBECCA J. COPIC October 11, 1897. She was born Abt. 1876(this has to be wrong she would only be 1 at her time of marraige to George) in Fayette, Illinois. Sandy Mott was a descendant of the following Campbell family line:

#5. George Campbell (m. Elizabeth), he was s/o

This unfortunate event was a shock to me. I had an opportunity to sit and
enjoy the exchange of chatter with Sandy just last October at our Campbell
Kids reunion at Massies Mill. I recognized at the time that she was frail,
or tiny, but figured that this was her normal feature, and not an
indication of an illness. My condolence to the entire family and may God
be with each of you during this time of sorrow. Regards, Bucky Harris

Dear Jimmy and Travis, I am so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. I know this is a shock to everyone that knew her and believe me there are several through this genealogy research. We are all proud to be called Campbell Cousins knowing that some where down the line we are all related to each other. We are a big family and that is a warm thought. I know that the memories that you have will help you through these trying times. My prayers are with you and know that your needs will be met. I will welcome conversing with her nephew when he decides to take over where she left off. Sandy will be missed by so many. Right now she is meeting all of those past generations that she has searched for and had questions about for so many years. Take care, Mary Ellen Campbell Mathers
