Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Thank you for sharing this information. I also am on a Campbell search in
VA and any Campbell info helps... if nothing else, to eliminate some
Campbell...
thank YOU

It is off exit #2. Here is a link to the Park Service information
http://www.nps.gov/kimo/
For those who maybe scared off by the word mountain, it is more like a big
hill. The area is heavily wooded with a paved trail around the battle
area. Other recreation and horse trails are also at the park.

Hello,
I'm new to the list and search for info on the Campbell family. I start
with William Campbell b 1836 d bef 1910 Perry Co, PA. He was married to
Mary b 1836 d aft 1910.
The children were: Samuel or Lemuel b 1858, Theodosia b 1859 d 1900 and
Elmer b 1861. If anyone can help with this family please contact me.
Thank you very much.
ED Schramm
Dear Sue,
There was a James K. Polk Campbell m. 1865, who left Nelson Co Virginia to
move to Manassa, Colorado in 1890, and then in 1895 moved to Arizona.
Hoever, I looked at his list of kids, and don't see a Gilbert to match.
His sons were: Rufus; Oscar; Perry; George; Daniel.
This family group were members of the Morman Church.
This family might not be connected to your Gilbert, but they might have
lived in the same state?
Here is what I see as your research strategy: look at www.ancestry.com for a
1900 census, for Gilbert Campbell, he should be about 12 years old, and he
should still be with his parents household.
There is a possiblity that Gilbert was not his real name, since you have a
confusion over names, but try that first.
You can see ancestry.com census records several ways: #1. you can subscribe,
even on the 14 day FREE trial, #2 you can ask other to look for you, like on
this mailing list, #3 you can go to your nearest Family History Center and
use their computor FREE of charge. Also, you might have a public library in
your town which offers ancestry.com free.
www.google.com this will get you searches on the name.
www.familysearch.org this will also get you some records on the name.
www.rootsweb.com this will get you a mega-search on many records.
This is just the beginning, and I hope you will keep this list posted with
anything new you find, in case others can help more.
PLUS: look for his World War 1 draft roll, this was mandatory in the 1917
time frame, give or take, and anyone born in 1888 would have had to sign
this, my great grandpa born 1872 had to sign it, and his son born 1896 had
to sing as well.
This also will be online with www.ancestry.com This will give his name,
actual birth date, and where he was living at the time he signed, and who
was his closest relative at the time, might even give his occupation, or
work place, and it will give his height, build, and hair and eye color.
Try to work on that, and use 1888 as the generaltime frame, since you are
not exactly sure of his birth.
Also, what about the 1920 census, 1910 census, these are also things you
need to find for him. Since the name GILBERT is at least slightly
distinctive, at least more so than John, you might be able to narrow down
the field.
Best regards,
Lilly Martin

Hi Cecil,
Oh how I wish we could have been there in Yorktown this year. We were there
3 years ago when they had a big celebration with people from France and
Germany. I planned this years trip backwards I guess. We went to Yorktown
before the reunion. Did you get in on all the good stuff. Cheryl did. Oh how
I wish we lived closer to all of these places.
Old Cornwallis was not man enough to face George Washington and hid in that
big white home down the road. But the job got done with out him.
Take care and let us know about the good things going on there.
Beverly.

Hello Greg,
I do not have any information for your Campbell research, I am sorry. But I
did want to reply to your statement about not being able to find any New
Jersey census information online.
I found out the hard way, that all the early census years, such as 1790,
1800, 1810, in the entire State of New Jersey are lost. They were not
burned, but they were lost.
So to compensate for that loss, they have re-created an alternative to those
lists, and they are the TAX ROLLS, or Tax Lists for that early time frame.
They are available in libraries, but they are also available online at
www.ancestry.com
If you do not have access to ancestry.com, because you are not subscribed,
you can do 3 things: 1. you can subscribe for the FREEE 14 day trial,or 2.
you can go to your nearest Family History Center, this is a FREE place,
which is run by the Mormon Church (LDS), but is not a religious place, it is
open to the public and has genealogical materials to research with, they
also offer ancestry.com for FREE use at their facilities, or 3. you can

This week there has been a big celebration on the 225th anniversary of the battle of Yorktown. The victory of this battle insured American independence. The date October 19,1781 our forefathers claimed victory that day. with the British surrender at Yorktown. My 3rd great grandfather William Campbell(1754-1836)and his brothers, John CAMPBELL (1750-1838) and Henry Campbell(1764-1835) where there when Lord Cornwallis surrendered. They where from Amherst Co. Va. the sons of George and Caty Campbell.

Hello,
I have a marriage on March 16, 1835 in Bytown, Ontario between Robert Campbell and Elizabeth Spratt. No parents are given so would appreciate it if anyone can tell me who the parents of Robert Campbell are. I am wondering if Charles Campbell who married Mary Mitchell on March 12, 1838 in Bathurst is Robert's brother. They are living on the same property in 1871 in Gloucester Township.
Thanks
Peggy

I'm also looking for Charles Muir Campbell and what happened to his parents and how he got out of Jamaica and who is "uncle James" was?
The info I've gleaned from others is that Charles Muir Campbell and Agnes Schenck had:
John Schenck Campbell, b 14Sep1818, Penns Neck, Mercer Co, NJ, USA, died 28Aug1903 Denver, Denver Co, CO, USA
James Campbell, (no middle initial, or possiby C. ?), who later became a Justice of the Peace and had the title of Esquire. b 7Jun1821, m Catherine Morrell Whitlock 11May1841 in Middleton, Monmouth Co, NJ, USA, and he d 3Feb1909 and may be buried in Springfield.
William Kovenhoven Campbell b28Mar1824 d27Mar1894 Divernon, Sangamon, IL, USA.
Ferdinand Schenck Campbell, b11Nov1827 d2Feb1828 as an infant and buried in NJ.
Possibly another Ferdinand Schenck Campbell who also died as an infant and buried in NJ.
Charles Morgan Campbell b8Jul1830 in Princeton, Mercer Co, NJ, USA, and died 8May1904 Virden, Macoupin Co, IL, USA.
Margaret Schenck Campbell, b17Feb1833 and died same year as an infant.
Cornelia Woodhull Campbell, b12Sep1836 in Princeton, Mercer Co, NJ, USA. Died 6Apr1902 Nelson, Nuckolls Co, NE, USA.
Charles Muir Campbell was a coach and harness maker. He had a home & shop at 32 & 34 Mercer St in Princeton NJ. He got "over extended" and sold his property by 1840 / 1841.
His son James Campbell, b1821 in NJ, married Catherine Morrell Whitlock 11May1841 in Middletown, Monmouth Co, NJ, USA. Shortly afterwards they moved to IL. Charles Muir moved with them.
James Campbell and Catherine M. Whitlock had 10 children, all of whom were living as of a 1904 biographical sketch at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmaga/macoupin/1904bios/campbellj.html
According to the biography - they moved from NJ to IL in 1840 and began farming in [most likely Jerseyville, but it's on the 1850 Census), in Jersey County, IL.
In 1854 they moved to Pawnee and farmed (?) in Sangamon County, near Springfield IL. I believe the 1860 Census shows James Campbell as head with his father, Charles Muir Campbell, living with them. The same Census shows C. Morgan Campbell as the household immediately before James Campbell, so the brothers were probably neighbors. It would appear that Charles Morgan Campbell went by "Morgan" instead of Charles, as there were 3 generations of Charles Campbell's in the area.
In 1873, Catherine Whitlock died a few months after the family moved to Virden, Macoupin County, IL, USA. They may have given up farming by then. My aunt recalls visiting them and that the house was "in town", not out on a farm. James Campbell was elected Police Magistrate, and around 1889 he started serving as Justice of the Peace (for Virden?).
As of the 1904 biography, they listed his living kids as:
Charles W.; Jennetta A., widow of George E. Warwick; Edward A.; James; Margaret C., widow of Daniel H. Warwick; John Morgan; Agnes S.; Catherine M.; Ferdinand S.; and Mary Caroline, wife of John Beasley. He also has 27 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Of the children above, my family recalls at least 6:
Charles "uncle Charlie" whom they believe moved to MT or WY and had a ranch out there.
Uncle Ferd would have been Ferdinand Schenck Campbell. Charles Muir Campbell had a doctor friend back in NJ that was named Ferdinand and he had attempted to name two of his sons Ferdinand, but they both died young. This Ferdinand was the baby boy of James Campbell ESQ.'s family.
And James Haddock Campbell was my gr-grandfather. There may have been another boy that my aunts & uncles remember. I'm thinking he may have had polio and had a bad leg.
There were also two "old maid" sisters who never married and lived in Virden. I was told they were called "Minnie and Maud". My aunt was born 1918 and recalls seeing them, so they both would have been alive around 1921 or 1922.
So... if anyone has more info on Charles Muir Campbell - I'm interested in details about his parents and his uncle that brought him to NJ (when & how).
Oh... there is another Ferdinand in one of the Census records. Living with the Campbell's is a Catherine(?) Updike and her son (or grandson?) Ferdinand Updike. It would appear that her maiden name was Catherine Schenck, so she is probably a sister to Agness Schenck.
I haven't found any Census records for New Jersey from the early 1800's, at least not online. Perhaps someone else has that info available?
Looking forward to more details!

I visited the Kings Mountain Battleground Park today. I made a photoshow of
historical plaques that tell the story of the battle. The winning commander
was William Campbell. It was the first major victory of the Americans over
the British in the south.

Hey everyone, I am trying to find out info on Clarence E (Buck) Campbell married to Gladys (Campbell) of Buena Vista / Covington area Virginia. Born October 1907 in Buena Vista Va and I have census info placing him there with parents & siblings 1920. Parents are William (Willie) Edward Campbell (of Nelson/Amherst Co VA) & Bessie Mae Pence (of Page Co , Shenandoah Va)
I have found a death index reference for a Clarence (married to Gladys Campbell) for Covington Va dated June 1975 and a census record for Covington Va 1930.
Trying to verify if this is the same Clarence Campbell and find children. My dad says Clarence and Gladys had 2 boy, Bucky (Clarence Jr? maybe) and another boy. Clarence (Bucky) supposedly moved to Lynchburg Va with wife Nancy and had 1 girl , 2 boys. Died before 1984. I know the grand kids names, but have lost contact with them.
Help!
