George Campbell b1813 was the son of William Campbell ans was married to
Elizabeth Dorris Campbell according to the 1840 Illinois census. William was born
in Davidson county TN same census. There was a George Washington Campbell
who owned property in Nashville TN aprox. 1825 I have forgot where info was
obtained. Not my line so I did not follow it. Good Luck
David Campbell
Sam et al,
I also have relatives (Ghormley) from Tellico Plains, Greene Co, TN. While
at the Tampa Public Library a few years ago I noted a 5 volume set of Civil
War questionnaires and answers dated about 1920-1922 which had been published
by the State of Tennessee. On a whim I checked the name of one of my
ancestors who was old enough to have served. Not only was their survey present, the
answers to the 42 questions covered their life, and the last one provided
the family male line back to about 1722 and the travels they had followed from
Ireland to get to Tennessee.
If Fountains children or grand-children were still living in Tennessee when
the survey was taken, and participated, you might be able to break past the
wall. At a minimum, getting a survey from one of the principal ancestors in
their own words has a value of its own. It may be possible to find similar
items in other states around the same time frame.
Just thought you would want to know what is possible with the source.

Dear List Members,
Can someone please help me find the parents of Henry? We know from the
DNA study that we are
related to Fountain Campbell, who was in Nelson County. There is
speculation that Henry's
father was Abraham Campbell of Pittsylvania County, but there is also
speculation it was
William Campbell.

I found this while ready campbell genealogies. If I remember correctly this
name was mentioned recently.
Brief Summary for Participant – #16751
Oldest Proven Campbell Ancestor: Colonel Aeneas Campbell (1730) of Virginia
and Maryland, USA.
Summary: The earliest record for Aeneas Campbell is in 1755 where he is
listed as a Justice of the County Court of Fairfax County Virginia. He next
appears in 1756 as the first Sheriff of the new county of Loudoun, Virginia
(named in honor of the 4th Earl of Loudoun, General John Campbell), and a trustee
of the town of Leesburg. After two years as Sheriff of Loudoun County, he is
once again a Justice for Loudoun County. Aeneas Campbell was responsible for
building the first courthouse for Loudoun County and its first jail; he was
also a Captain in the Loudoun Militia. After some years in Loudoun, he moved
over the Potomac River to the counties of Fredrick and Montgomery, Maryland.
During his time in Maryland, he served as a Colonel in the Revolution and
served as a Justice for Montgomery County MD until his death in 1812. *It is
unknown at this time if he was born in the colonies or Great Britain. One
historian & author in Scotland list him as coming to the colonies from Kilberry,
Scotland, although the historian lists no official documentation to his
findings as of this writing.
Line to Present Day Participant:
1. Aeneas Campbell Sr (1730 - 1812) m. Lydia Cartwright (about 1735 - 1770),
MD
2. Aeneas Campbell Jr (1757 - 1828) m. Elizabeth Ann Belt (1767 - 1853),

Family Web Site: N/A
The John Massie family and the John Campbell family of old Amherst certainly
did have close ties since 3 of John Massie's children married 3 of John
Campbell's children. There were two separate lines of Massies in old
Amherst County during the late 1700s: 1) the family of John Massie and
Susannah Wright and 2)Thomas Massie and his brother William (Billy) who had
the large land holdings in the Massie's Mill area.
John Massie came from Albemarle County and his father was Charles Massie of
Spring Valley Plantation. John is said to be the first school teacher on
Piney River and tutored the children of Rev. John Duncan. John and his
father both served in the Rev.War.
John and Susannah had nine children and the 3 children who married offspring
of John and Frances Campbell are:
1) Jesse Massie married Permelia Campbell 15 Nov. 1818 in Amherst Co
2) Mary "Polly" Massie married George Washington Campbell on 22 Jan. 1817 in
Amherst Co.
3) John "Jack" Massie, Jr. married Sallie Campbell.
And, yes, as A.T. said, Thomas Massie married as his second wife Nancy
Maddox, daughter of John and Betsey Campbell Maddox and granddaughter of
John and Frances Campbell.
The second line of Massies listed above, Thomas and William, came from New
Kent County. There has been much speculation about whether Charles Massie
of Albemarle County was their cousin. No proof can be found. In 1870
genealogical information from the great-granddaughter of Charles, Mrs. Moon
stated her ancestryfrom from EdmundMassie of Sandyways, Cheshire, England.
I, too, descend from the family of John and Susannah Wright Massie and the
family of John and Frances Wright. I share all the above to emphasize how
interwined the Campbells and Massies are.

Now I am wondering which of these possible Alphonso's is mine, if in fact that is the correct name. Someone mentioned the Amherst Co was actually an Alfred???
That leaves me in Nelson Co. still.

Marvin,
I do not have any Massie ancestry, but I do know from historical accounts
that William Massie, aka Billie Massie, was one of the largest landowners
and Slave holders in Virginia. He was also Justice of the Peace for Nelson
Co.VA.
The Massie name is very prominate in both Nelson and Amherst Co VA.
There was a Book written about the Massie family, but as I understand it was
more concerned with agricultural practice and not exactly geared toward
genealogy.
Also, in the Book written by Shirley T. Craft, who is on this mailing list,
she lists alot of the Massie family, since the book covers the Massie,
Maddox, Bowling and Campbell family names.
I am certainly not an authority on the Massie name, but I am sure there are
others who know the family very well.
But if you were wondering about the name only, in passing, I will only say
that it was a prominate surname in Middle Virginia.
Best regards,
Lilly Martin

Dear Shirley and all others,
Thank you for identifying Benjamin F. Campbell (b. 1833-1837?) as the son of
James W. Campbell of Augusta Co VA.
I can now take him off the list of supposed children of Cornelius Campbell.
Campbell Family Tree had stated that Cornelius Campbell, m. Catherine
Campbell m. 1816, had these kids:
Shannon D., William H., George T., Maurice P., Benjamin W., Arrana M., and
Mary Jane.
Because I was told that my George T. Campbell b. 1824 d 1856 was the man
listed above, I have been studying this family group for a long time, trying
to prove or disprove.
A fellow researcher went to the Nelson Co Courthouse, and kindly found, Will
Book G, page 304, obligating William H. Campbell, admistrator, Shannon D.
Campbell, and Maurice P. Campbell, to inventory the assests of the deceased
Cornelius Campbell. This doc. is dated 28th of Dec. 1846. The inventory is
documented in Will Book H, page 48. The inventory was small: $77.00, a
horse, couple of cows, etc.
Starting in 1822, there are 18 deeds of trust between Cornelius Campbell and
various people, one of the deeds involves the purchase of 126 acres of land
in Nelson Co from James Higgenbotham, but apparently, he never had a clear
title to this deed. Cornelius would put this land up for sale, to follow on
a deed of trust, but never followed through, apparently.
It is said that Cornelius Campbell died in 1840, presumably in Nelson Co,
leaving a widow Catherine Campbell b. 1795, d/o Henry Campbell and Sarah
Wright of Nelson Co.VA.
That widow was living in 1860 census, as H.H. in Rose Mill, Nelson Co.,
inside the house is Sarah W. Campbell b. 1820, who may be her daughter.
Yesterday I posted how this Sarah W. Campbell b. 1820 in the 1870 census and
1880 census calls Julia Ann Campbell, the d/o George T. Campbell b. 1824,
NIECE. Does this prove that Sarah W. Campbell is the sister of George T.
Campbell?
Sylvia Camden Ray listed the land taxes in 1850 and 1855, which state
Cornelius Campbell, land is 126 acres, in Nelson Co. This would be the land
that Cornelius bought from James Higgenbotham, before mentioned. This would
be the land that he repeatedly tried to sell, but couldn't, or backed-out of
selling.
Sylvia says that in later years that land was listed in the name of Sarah W.
Campbell. Does this prove that Sarah W. Campbell is the d/o Cornelius
Campbell?
Deed Book 15, page 268, dated 17 July 1858, between Washington Campbell and
Sarah W. Campbell, whereas Cornelius Campbell in order to cure and
******Benjamin Campbell and his security in a forthcoming bond to Gibbs and
Emmett in a penalty of $520.26 for the amount due on a FIFIA issued from the
clerk of the circuit court for Nelson Co of principal and interest and all
of &2, 611.08 on which bond judgement was obtained by deed of trust dates 28
April 1842 of record in the clerks office of Nelson Co conveyed to James D.
Goodwin......among other things a track of land containing 126 acres in
trust and with the power and authority to the said Goodwin to sell for the
payment of said debt.
What this above document really means, is not clear to me. According to
Sylvia Camden Ray, the 126 acres originally belonging to Cornelius did
evenually go into the name of Sarah W. Campbell (b.1820), then in 1858 she
had to sell the land in order to payoff the debt discussed above. Is that
correct?
In the 1860 census Catherine Campbell b. 1795 and Sarah W. Campbell b. 1820
are living next door to William H. Campbell b. 1818 and wife Martha b. 1825,
and also next door to John H. Campbell b. 1789 (brother of Catherine) and
wife? Arrana M. Campbell b. 1827, said to be d/o Cornelius Campbell and
Catherine.
These 3 houses are the ONLY Campbell houses listed at Rose Mill, Nelson Co
VA. In the 1870 census and 1880 census Sarah W. Campbell b. 1820 is listed
at Massies Mill, Nelson Co VA., and in both of those census reports she is
head of household, with Julia Ann Campbell living inside with her, and
listed as NIECE, this Julia Ann Campbell being the d/o George T. Campbell b.
1824, and the wife of Benjamin M. Campbell, the son of Arrana M. Campbell,
based upon the census report of 1860.
1830 census, Nelson Co, VA
Household of Cornelius Campbell, s/o George and Elizabeth.
1 male under 5 (George T. Campbell b. 1824)
1 male 5-10 (Maurice P. Campbell b. 1823)
1 male 10-15 (William H. Campbell b. 1818)
1 male 30-40 (Cornelius Campbell b. 1790)
2 females under 5 (Arrana M. b. 1827, and Mary Jane?)
1 female 10-15 (Sarah W. Campbell b. 1820)
1 female 30-40 (Catherine Campbell b. 1795)
I have proposed the family to be such as above, but WHERE is Shannon D.
Campbell and Benjamin W. ??
Was Shannon D. Campbell the oldest? He married in 1836 in Rockbridge Co VA.
In 1830 is he already over there? In 1830
is he living with his grandparents? Was Benjamin W. Campbell born after the
1830 census was taken? Where is Benjamin W. Campbell in 1860 census? He is
not listed in Nelson or Amherst Co VA. I have no marriage record for a
Benjamin W. Campbell, which could be for the approx age of this man (need
1840-1850ish)
***********************************************
Now to switch gears to James Campbell, Jr, s/o James Campbell, Sr and Mary
Smith of Nelson Co, VA. James Campbell, Jr did live in Nelson Co and did
marry, but unfortunately he never had CHILDREN, so there are no Campbell
descendants from him. His brother William Campbell left descendants in
Alabama, where he settled.
James Campbell, Jr and his wife Judith Fitzgerald did raise a boy named
Walter Snead.
This info came to me from Mr. Lynden Harris.
Best regards,
Lilly Martin

> Dear Campbell Cousins,
>
> This is a comment re the post on April 24,2005 by Lilly to Sylvia and
others. As I posted earlier, James W. Campbell is listed on several of the
tax lists as a resident of Augusta County and paying taxes on land in Nelson
County. While I have not been able to determine who his father was or who
his first wife was, I have proved he had a son Alfred H. Campbell, who
bought land in the early 1850s and settled there after his marriage to
Delilah Massie, daughter of Thomas Massie and wife Nancy Maddox.
>
> I have also proved James W. Campbell married Jane Massie in Nelson County
in 14 June 1830. Jane must have died after 1840 because James W. and a
number of children moved with Alfred to Augusta County and appear first on
the 1850 Census of Augusta County. Living in the same household were:
>
> James W. Campbell abt. 1780
> Alfred H. Campbell abt. 1828
> Benjamin F. Campbell January 1833
> Lawson Campbell abt 1835
> Charles P. Campbell abt 1840
> Sarah A. Campbell abt 1831
> Nancy Campbell abt 1838
> Julia Campbell abt 1839
>
> James W. is shown as the head of household (Family #1597), living next
door to Alfred, Delilah, and their children on the 1860 Augusta County
Census. His age listed as 75 and if correct that would make his birthyear
1785.
>
>
>
> The Benjamin F. Campbell (or Benjamin Franklin) mentioned in #3 of Lilly's
post of April 24th is the son of James W. Campbell and Jane Massie. He
moved back to Amherst County and was married 4 times. His first wife was
Sarah A. Mays (married 12 Nov. 1857 in Amherst County; second wife, Mary
Jane Hudson, m. 13 Sept 1865 in Amherst Co.; third wife, Sally Ann Hudson,
m. 27 Oct. 1875; and fourth, Lelia Ann Henson m. 27 Feb. 1890. Benjamin
died 16 Dec. 1907 and is buried in the Amherst Cemetery. All of the
marriage records can be found and several list James W. Campbell and Jane
Massie as his parents.
>
> Lawson Campbell stayed in Augusta County and married.
>
> Now, as for Alfred. Alfred was traveling back and forth between Augusta,
Amherst and Nelson counties. On the 1850 Amherst County Census records, an
"Alforner" is shown in the household of William H. Campbell and wife Martha.
I believe that man to be Alfred. He is listed as 21 years old and that is
about right for Alfred. Besides that, William H. was neighbor(#664) to
Eldridge Campbell(#666) who married Elizabeth Massie, the sister of Delilah
Massie who married Alfred Campbell. Now, the question is was William H. or
Eldridge brother of Alfred? Alfred H.Campbell is my ggg grandfather.
>
> I hope I have clarified who "Alforner" is. I'm very interested in this
discussion about William H. Campbell.
> The comments about a James W. Campbell, Jr., the son of James and Mary
Smith, intrigue me and I need to study this info before I can discuss him.

My John's grandfather, Robert Campbell, married again after the death of his
first wife. There are many descendants in this family as well as ours, the
first set of children. Send me some dates on your John of Alabama and I will
look through what I have to see if I can find a match. They lived in what
is now Hawkins Co. TN early, (late 1700's).

Thanks for the information. I am trying to place these John Campbells,
trying to see where my John comes in. I know he lived in Tennessee before
coming to Jackson County, Alabama. I wish there was not so many John
Campbells around!

The John Campbell (1780-1850) and Sarah Kimbro who married in Giles County
TN July 1813 are my ancestors. John migrated to Giles Co.,TN from Hawkins
County TN and Sarah came to Giles from Stokes County, NC. John Campbell and
his three brothers migrated to Giles County Tennessee just about the time
Giles became a county (1809-1810) Sarah, her mother and three brothers were
there by time of 1812 tax list. One brother, Robert Kimbro, was too young
to be on tax list but we have other documents as proof of his residence
there. John & Sarah (Kimbro) moved to Fountain Creek Community, later named
Campbell's Station, Maury Co..TN about 1819 and lived their until their
deaths. Both died in Maury Co., TN. Most of their sons & daughters, who
lived to maturity, were school teachers. I hope this will help someone.

Frederick Campbell and John H. Campbell.

Tennessee.

Rev. John Campbell, born 1779 Rockbridge County, VA, son of John Campbell
and Mary Ann Downey. This John married Mildred Walker Moore.

***This John Campbell was born October 1780. He married Sally Kimbrough.
He died in Giles County, TN 6 April 1850

If ANYONE has any information about these John Campbells I would appreciate
receiving information. I descend from John Campbell, born ca 1779 in VA. He
was in Jackson County, Alabama where he owned land. I descend from his son
George Lafayette Campbell.

Thank you for the information, no I don't think I have been to that site.
Guess I will try emailing Maureen LOWE. Isobella Strang would have been
married to Great Grandfather, Andrew BROWN and Isabella STRANG married in
1876. Thank you for the information both on the website and the census
record.

Dear Campbell Cousins,
This is a comment re the post on April 24,2005 by Lilly to Sylvia and others. As I posted earlier, James W. Campbell is listed on several of the tax lists as a resident of Augusta County and paying taxes on land in Nelson County. While I have not been able to determine who his father was or who his first wife was, I have proved he had a son Alfred H. Campbell, who bought land in the early 1850s and settled there after his marriage to Delilah Massie, daughter of Thomas Massie and wife Nancy Maddox.
I have also proved James W. Campbell married Jane Massie in Nelson County in 14 June 1830. Jane must have died after 1840 because James W. and a number of children moved with Alfred to Augusta County and appear first on the 1850 Census of Augusta County. Living in the same household were:
James W. Campbell abt. 1780
Alfred H. Campbell abt. 1828
Benjamin F. Campbell January 1833
Lawson Campbell abt 1835
Charles P. Campbell abt 1840
Sarah A. Campbell abt 1831
Nancy Campbell abt 1838
Julia Campbell abt 1839
James W. is shown as the head of household (Family #1597), living next door to Alfred, Delilah, and their children on the 1860 Augusta County Census. His age listed as 75 and if correct that would make his birthyear 1785.
The Benjamin F. Campbell (or Benjamin Franklin) mentioned in #3 of Lilly's post of April 24th is the son of James W. Campbell and Jane Massie. He moved back to Amherst County and was married 4 times. His first wife was Sarah A. Mays (married 12 Nov. 1857 in Amherst County; second wife, Mary Jane Hudson, m. 13 Sept 1865 in Amherst Co.; third wife, Sally Ann Hudson, m. 27 Oct. 1875; and fourth, Lelia Ann Henson m. 27 Feb. 1890. Benjamin died 16 Dec. 1907 and is buried in the Amherst Cemetery. All of the marriage records can be found and several list James W. Campbell and Jane Massie as his parents.
Lawson Campbell stayed in Augusta County and married.
Now, as for Alfred. Alfred was traveling back and forth between Augusta, Amherst and Nelson counties. On the 1850 Amherst County Census records, an "Alforner" is shown in the household of William H. Campbell and wife Martha. I believe that man to be Alfred. He is listed as 21 years old and that is about right for Alfred. Besides that, William H. was neighbor(#664) to Eldridge Campbell(#666) who married Elizabeth Massie, the sister of Delilah Massie who married Alfred Campbell. Now, the question is was William H. or Eldridge brother of Alfred? Alfred H.Campbell is my ggg grandfather.
I hope I have clarified who "Alforner" is. I'm very interested in this discussion about William H. Campbell.
The comments about a James W. Campbell, Jr., the son of James and Mary Smith, intrigue me and I need to study this info before I can discuss him.

OOPs. That didn't sound too nice. I know Ancestry is a useful tool and
there are plenty of nice, free sites full of info out there. Guess I need a cup
of coffee. Sorry.
