Have you determined if there were any boundary changes that would have made
it seem that Wm James Campbell moved, when in fact, he stayed put?
Looking at different CT maps, I see in 1760 that Berkshire formed from
Hampshire & that Yorkshire (ME) divided into York (ME), Cumberland (ME),
Lincoln (ME)
Back to 1643 -
Massachusetts, Connecticut- Rhode Island:
Essex, Middlesex & Suffolk formed as original counties. (note that these
three states are under one jurisdiction at this point in time. Also,
Plymouth colony is a part of this area)
1666- Fairfield (CT), Hartford (CT), New Haven (CT), and New London (CT)
formed as original counties.
1685- Plymouth, Barnstable and Bristol formed as original counties in
Plymouth Colony.
1692- Nantucket, Martha's Binyard and Elizabeth Islands ceded to
Massachusetts by New York.
1729 - Washington (RI) (as Narragansett??) from Rhode Island
Rhode Island (RI) name changed to Newport.
Now, the above are not all the changes.. I took one map here and there...
there were many, many changes over the years. Some areas will exchange land
several times, back and forth, with other counties and states in the area.
Think you need to consider all of New England states when doing your CT
research.
Hope this helps. Marge in Stockton, CA USA

I have the same problem, my family is William James Campbell he was born
about 1721 where unknown, but I find him listed as James in the vital
records and church records when his children were born between 1743 and 1756
in Windsor, CT. He moved to Chester, MA about 1760 with most of his
children. He died in 1882 in Chester were he was listed in the vital records
as William father of Matthew one of his sons, and on the tombstone he is
also listed as William.
Anything before 1743, I haven't been able to find anything on him.
There are alot of Campbells in Voluntown, Windham, CT during that time
frame.

Dear New Jersey Campbell researchers,
As a follow up to the email I sent, discussing the lack of census records in
NJ for 1790-1820, here is some info which will help. The TAX lists have
been microfilmed and can be viewed at your local FHC. Here is the film #:

Best regards,

To those of you with New Jersey Campbell families, during the colonial
period, and up to 1820: I just yesterday found out, that the 1790, 1800,
and 1810, 1820 census reports have all been lost.
Yes, that means the first 4 federal census records for the State of New
Jersey are "Gone with the Wind". I was so shocked and saddened. I have
come to depend on census records.
I have learned of some substitute sources of Re-Constructed census, for the
Revotionary War period, which a Mr. Kenn Stryker-Rodda published in 1986.
That book should be in public libraries, ask your local librarian to assist
you in finding a copy, even thru inter-library loan. The Rockland Co., NY
public library does have a copy. He based this work on the Militia lists of
1793.
Also, I have been told, that www.ancestry.com does have NJ tax lists, which
can be used in the place of a census. Ancestry can be subscribed to, or you
can veiw it for FREE at your nearest Family History Center, they all have
free access at their locations across USA and in other countries as well.
I also think that online, you can 'google' to find many NJ records which can
substitute for the census 1790-1820 time frame.
Best regards,
Lilly Martin

I agree with your take on this situation. We obviously need more
info dto make any decision about John's lineage. As soon as I get moved and
settled, I hope to get back to my genealogy in earnest. Right now, it is catch as
catch can!

Thank you for the census information. I have been searching for the
father of George Campbell of New Jersey for several years with no
luck. It has been reported that his father was named Robert, but I
have not found any reference to support that name.
I thought I could narrow the search by finding the name of a
Campbell wounded at the battle of Trenton. There were four men
wounded at that battle but I haven't found out what their names
were.
If you find anything that may help, please let me know.
I found George in the 1810 Tax list of Adams Co., OH and the 1820,
1830, 1840, and 1850 US Census of Adams Co.
Taken from A History of Adams County, Ohio, Evans and Stivers 1900.
[NOTE: NAME OF FATHER NOT GIVEN]
George Campbell was born in New Jersey, January 3, 1778. His father
was in the Revolutionary War and was wounded at the battle of
Trenton, December 26, 1776, and died of the same in 1778. After his
father's death, his mother moved to Kentucky and married a man named
Peterson. In 1792, George, who could not get along with his
step-father, ran away and went to the Stockade in Manchester.
__________ .George grew to manhood in Adams County and spent his
life there. He married Katherine Noland on September 15, 1803, and
in 1804 settled in Scott Township, where he died October 30, 1854."

I was already aware that there was another John Campbell in Nelson

John is on the 1870 Nelson Co. Census, age 40, Emeline is 36.
On the 1880 she is 45 and he is gone but the "story" is he went to Buckingham
County where he is buried having left his family.
I have only the 1870 and 1880 census.
I think they may have married in Rockbridge Co. and so I must search further
afield.

This is what I have on Eldridge:
Eldridge Campbell is placed here per Lyle Campbell () who states that "My
information is verbal. Mr. Mathew Campbell, son of Louis, grandson of Eldridge,
told me that Eldridge was the brother of Leroy. " I have found no
documentation for this and Bartholomew and Tabitha were married in 1820. This would
make them his parents..
