Not that interesting if you look at the old maps for VA:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mcampbel/va2/va1606a.htm
1606 & 1609 Charter for VA & North America
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mcampbel/va2/1781a.htm
1781 Virginia boundaries (all for North America actually)
Note: follow the links at the bottom of these pages for different maps.
I have more to include (the ones not yet linked), but my books are packed
away. We leave here Saturday for Texas ( Littlefield)....will take couple
days or so to arrive, depending on weather.
I originally posted the above maps to my web site due to so many saying
there were no Campbell's in VA prior to a certain date...I think there
were.. If you are up against a brick wall..check the maps on this site
against one for current times & you may just find old George in MD, is
indeed George of VA, etc...(that's just a sample).
Never let a location stop you from considering a line... Boundaries changed
a lot & often back during the formation of our wonderful country.

Wow. This George Campbell database certainly opened a can of worms. The
objective of the database, I think, is to identify the Georges that entered
the colonies in the mid-1700's. So, I guess what we need to do is look for
George Campbells who would have been born prior to 1740. In other words,
Georges who would have been old enough to appear on land, will, and census
records after 1745.
I found it extremely interesting that on the 1800 census there were no
George Campbells in Virginia.
However, I found land records for George Campbells in at least 3 different
areas of Virginia who appeared to be unrelated (St. James Fork, Augusta Co.,
Amherst/Albemarle Co.). However, I've only found 2 wills for George
Campbells between 1750 and 1800
(1777 and 1791). Apparently, one of the Georges either didn't have a will,
or one of those two Georges owned land in different parts of the state of
VA.
I'm going to run over to my genealogy library tonight and look up a pension
record for a George Campbell in the Revolutionary War. He was neither of
the Georges listed above, but his records might shed light on something.

How about a JAMES Campbell for NC 1780's? That would
be helpful as well!

Campbell Cousins,
B Harris, I gave the Idea of the Following Generation only Because Cousin
Steve Campbell From MO. Stated: QOUTE CUZ Steve: I think we Should Create a
database of ALL information everyone has on <George Campbell's> in the U. S.
Prior to 1800.
Just Maybe Cousin Dirmid Campbell who lives in Scotland would have some INFO
on A George Before he Left To come over>
A T <atpowelljr(a)aol.com>
I would think that we would only need to identify the first generation of
Campbell's to enter Amherst/Albemarle/Goochland and not have to worry about
their off springs. If we could link the following Campbells back to the old
country, we would be in tall cotton:
Lawrence
Henry
George D1777
George D1791
Neil
James Campbell married Mary Smith about 1770

I have a George Campbell, born in NC circa 1787. He was in Iredell
County in central NC in the 1850 census. I haven't tied him into my
line but would be happy to contribute to the database however I can.

I was thinking about mainly "Georges" from pre-1800. I think it
would be safe to take all the "Georges" from Pennsylvania to
South Carolina.
I know we have 3 immigration records into VA and MD from before
1800 on "Georges" (1742, 1744, and another year). Two wills
(1776 and 1791). And a will of a Gilbert Campbell that mentions
an infant George.
There were no adult George Campbells in Virginia in 1704,
according to the tithable tables. This should be able to narrow
our focus.
Anyone have any ideas on how we can post this George information
in an organized way?
I think we should create a database of all
information everyone has on "George Campbells" in the
U.S. prior to 1800. We can get all the info together
in one place and perhaps separate them out one by
one. There doesn't appear to be that many "Georges"--
I know we have a couple in Augusta Co., VA; 2 in
Amherst Co., VA; and another somewhere by the James
Fork in VA. If everyone concentrates their efforts on
identifying the various Georges, we should be able to
identify who is who. So far, there have only been 3
records of a George Campbell entering the VA/SC/MD
area in the 1700's. Anyone willing to work on
something like this?
