Whether or not one finds a relative amongst those you have listed, reading
the descriptions and reasons for them leaving are heart breaking. How tough
those ancestors must have been to survive the conditions they did. Not only
before they left Scotland, but also during a long and dangerous voyage, and
the years that followed.
I doubt that many of us 'softies' would survive similar conditions today.
It is only too easy to think of our ancestors as a bunch of names. The
history that goes alongside them is so important to know and understand.
"The survival of the fittest" comes to mind as one also thinks of the many
who perished through deprivation, disease and hunger.
Your lists are a 'must read' - a reminder - for all of us. One special
feeling that emerges is pride. Pride in those amazing Scots who coped with
all the harships and created a new life in a distant land. Also those who
stayed behind and somehow overcame the terrible hardships and, amongst all
of them, those who went and those who stayed, produced people who have
affected the way we live today, in every corner of the earth.
Thanks for putting them on the List. I hope I can get hold of a copy of
that book from somewhere.
Regards
Lorna

Thanks to Pat Cater fro sending me the except on this man from the Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, Vol V.
Here is his ancestry in brief out line:
1. Henry Campbell, m. Charity
2. Joel Campbell, m. Elizabeth Mills
3. Lewis Campbell, m. Susanna Monroe, 10-31-1803 Amherst Co VA
4. Joel Henry Campbell b. 1820, d. 1887
5. Clarence Jackson Campbell
From # 1 thru #5 genrations above, they all were living in Amherst Co VA. and the book states that #5 above was living on the ORIGINAL land of his ancestor, so I would take that to mean Henry and/or Joel.
I hope this might help someone, I am not related as far as I know.
Best regards,
Lilly Martin

Donna - from a Kiwi "cousin"!
If I'm wrong about this, I have no doubt someone will correct me!!
The fact that your Campbells were born in Ireland does not mean that you do
not have ancestors from Scotland. Many Campbells (and other Scots) went to
Ireland before they moved on elsewhere. Sometimes they stayed for a short
time and sometimes for one or two generations or more - some just sayed,
full stop!!

Hello,
I am a California girl originally. For those of you who are tracking
Campbell families in California, you can go to:
www.rootsweb.com , click on SEACHES, then scroll down slightly to CADI,
which is California Death Index, basically everyone who died in California
between 1940 and 2000, you can narrow down your searches using birthplace,
or mother's maiden name, etc.(For example: surname of Campbell, and
birthplace of VIRGINIA might give me a list of names which possibly fit into
my research area)
For deaths which are prior to 1940, go to:
www.vitalsearch-ca.com This is a FREE site, but they do offer some
databases which are subscription, though I have never paid yet, and I have
gotten loads of data from this site.
This site has birth, death, and marriage data in California, and they are
continually updating and upgrading their data.
There are pop-up ads, which go toward paying for the site, so be patient,
and learn how to manuver around the site, the first time you try you may get
frustrated, but don't loose patience, the data you will find will be worth
the struggle. They death index here starts at 1905 I think.
Remember, California was first owned by Spain/Mexico, and only had a few
Spanish Military Forts at San Diego, Los Angeles, Monterey. Almost all the
population were Hispanic surnames, with very few European surnames living
there. The non-hispanic settlers coming in from the East, and immigrants
come Europe, started arriving in the 1849 basic time frame, for the GOLD
Rush. Prior to that time, California was sparsley populated.(Reason for the
name of the footbal team San Francisco 49ers)
There very well may have been CAMPBELL men/families who either arrived from
Eastern America, or on boats from Europe (England/Ireland/Scotland) to
California during and after 1849.
Best regards,
Lilly Martin

Dear Connie,
Good message to the Campbell L-List about patience.
I'm so glad that you are still looking for Neil C.'s sons Dugald and
Charles. So am I. I figure that if they had lived into their eighties they
might still be around in the 1940s. I was given a web site near Lacolle
PQ put up by someone who was doing research in that part of Quebec, but it
would not come up so may be gone.
I found another about 'English Settlers in Lacolle' which told me that
Neil's fist wife's father was a surveyor employed to lay out the townships
there, but nothing much more.
I am now trying the Quebec Civil Archives - although my French is rough.
My best to you both, Diarmid

Hi Donna,
I agree with Lorna.
I have 2 branches of Campbell's. One from Sutherland in Scotland. The other
from Northern Ireland.
The Irish lot moved backwards and forwards to Scotland, very tricky tracking
them down. Hence my Irish Campbell Grandmother married my Scottish
grandfather, who's mother was a Scottish Campbell!!!

Hi Lorna,
Bruce of BC and Diarmid Campbell our CCSNA Editor Emeritus of Argyll have found that there does not seem to be National Societies, rather there is local ones, such as Otago, Canterrbury and Aukland.
Otago: Mrs. Margaret Campbell 20Comely Bank, Opotto, Dunedin 9001, New Zealand.
Canterbury: Bob McDermid, Box 190606 Christchurch, New Zealand.
Aukland: Mrs. Alison Weir 1/2 Marlborough St. Aukland 2, New Zealand.
This might be helpful.
Alistair Very cold in Alberta.
Dan, Looking at the name patterns, could these folks be a crack in
the wall???? I haven't seen Asa in these parts except from Campbell
descendants. We have Aeneas's oldest son by the second wife, Thomas, and
about ten thousand Williams, but no Nathans. I think that David
Cartwright Campbell removed to Wilkes County Georgia but I have little
on the James that came with A Jr and is buried at New Hope with his
family. Ideas? thoughts? Psycho analysis? Larry (Iredell Co NC)

postings here have been limited for us as obviously few are Australian and
those originating from Scotland haven't helped much but I will continue

Donald Campbell, Aged 50, farmer, married, has one son 12 years old, resided
last in the Parish of Adrahoolish, in the county of Sutherland on the estate
of Rea. Intends to go to Carolina because the small farm he possest could
not keep a Plough, and he could not rais so much corn my delving as maintain
hsi family and pay his rent, which was advanced from 21/ to 31/. Has hopes
of meeting an uncle in America who will be able to put him in a way of
gaining his bread.

under th eheadings: names, former residence, occupation or employment, age,
to what port or place bound, on what account and for what purpose.
Reasons assigned by the persons named on this and ye three preceeding pages
of this list for their emigrating folls vist. The farmers and labourers who
are taking their passage in this ship unanimously declare that they never
would have thought of leaving their native country, could they have supplied
their famiies in it. But such of them as were farmers were obliged to quit
their lands either on account of th eadvanced rent or to make room for
sheepherds. Those in particular from apine say that out of one hundred mark
land of it is now turned into sheep walks and they seem to think in a few
years more, two thirds of that country, at least will be in the same state
so of course the greatest part of the inhabitants will be obliged to leave
it. The labourers declare they could not support their families on the
wages they earned ans that it is not from any other motve but the dread of
want that they quit a country which above all other they would wish to live
in. Captain Allan Stewart formerly a Lieutenant in Frasers Regiment goes
with an intention of settling in the lands granted him by the government at
the end of last war. But should the troubles continue in America he is
determined to make the best of his way to Boston and offer his services to
General Gage.
The tradesmen have a prospect of getting better wages but their principal
reason seems to be that their relations are going and rather than part with
them they chuse to go along.

NOTE: These are very detailed accounts & I am only posting those mentioning
Campbell's. Also, if you see a list of footnotes, you will know the next
information is on different page than the last. MC
footnote: (49) Personal security
Hector Mcdonald, Aged 75 married, a farmer, hath three sons who emigrate
with him, John Alexander & George (NOTE: John & Alexander have no seperator
(comma)but are two individuals) from 27 to 22 years old, also two
grandchildren Hector Campbell age 16, and Alexr. Campbell age 12, who go to
their mother already in Carolina. Resided last at Langwall in the Parish of
Rogart in the county of Sutherland, upon the estate of Sutherland. Intends
to go to North Carolina, left his own country because the rents of his
possession had been raised from one pound seven shillings to four pounds,
while the price of the cattle raised upon it fell more than one half, and
not being in a corn country the price of bread was so far advanced, that a
cow formerly worth from 50 sh to L$ 3 - couldonly purchase a boll of meal.
He suffered much by the death of cattle and still more by oppressive
services exacted by the factor, being obliged to work with his people &
cattle for 40 days and more each year, without a bit of bread. That falling
into reduced circumstances he was assured by some of his children already in
America that his family might subsist more comfortably there, and in all
events they can scarce be worse. Ascribes the excessive price of corn to
the consumption of it in distilling.
NOTE: There are two more instances of Campbell's in this document, I will
post those later.
Hope this helps someone.. I have no further information on these Campbell's,
but can give you exact page numbers, etc, if you find a connection.
