Probably something to do with the ridiculous HIPPA law that has interferred
with health care needs and free flow of information of any sort. Guess someone
decided that old records have a right to their privacy and confidentiality.

As promised, here is the lineage he sets out:
1. George Campbell
2. George Campbell had a charter of confirmation under the great seal dated
11 Nov 1537. I believe the latin says 'George, son of George CAMPBELL,
whose father was Hew CAMPBELL of Loudoun, of Bryntwood.'
3. James Campbell of Bruntwood is known from a renunciation of 7 Nov 1547
granted by Helen SIMSON of the land of Killoch to Hew CAMPBELL, son of James
CAMPBELL of Bruntwood.
4. Hew Campbell of Killoch had a feu charter fom the Commendator of Melrose
dated 20 My 1556 for the lands of Lochlee, Auchinbrain, and Killoch.
5. Hew Campbell of Killoch resigns his lands in favor of his son in 1567.
6. Also the above Hew Campbell, younger, acquired the lands of Holehouse 28
Oct 1577.
7. George Campbell of Killoch is recognized as heir to Hew Campbell the
younger in 1605 in Barnaughthill and the aforementioned lands. This George
is the one mentioned in Hew, Lord Loudoun's entail in 1613. He's mentioned
in wills through 1616. His daughter, Mary CAMPBELL, married the Laird of
Montgarswood, James CAMPBELL. And he had a son who succeeded.
8. Hugh Campbell of Killoch, in 1634 "was served heir to Lord Loudoun as
Baillie of Kylesmuir." This Hugh was alive al leat through 1654.
***Note, Killoch is found near the boundary of Mauchline and Galston*****
This concludes what he has on the Campbells of Killoch.

by James
Paterson, vol 1--Kyle, Edinburgh: 1863
To begin, a discussion of the source of the Killoch Campbells and their
relationship to the Loudoun Campbells and Cesnock Campbells.
The Campbells of Killoch appear second in the entail executed by Hugh,
first Lord LOUDOUN in 1613. Cesnock ranks first, but there appears to be
some disention in the matter, which Paterson says documentary evidence does
not resolve either. Cesnock was believed to be a more distant branch of the
Loudoun family, but mentioned first because he was married to the second
daughter of the Master of Loudoun. However Paterson states, " This may
possibly have been the case, though we find the assumed progenitors of
Cesnock and Killoch so closely co-existent as to lead to the conjecture that
their fathers were brothers, or that Cesnock was the origin of both." John
CAMPBELL of Shankiston (see previous posts) were placed third in the entail
and appears in public documents (1488) about the same time as the Cesnocks
and Killochs. Essentially there is doubt as to whether the entail was
stylized in the normal way with the closest relative mentioned first.
Paterson goes on to say, "Had this been the case, it would have begun with
the descendants of Mathew, ancestor of the LAUHDONS of Germany, great
grandson of George CAMPBELL of Loudoun, the supposed father of the first
Cesnock or Killoch. As Lord Hugh had no prospect of heirs-male from his own
body, the calling in the entail may have been, in some measure, the reverse
of the usual order of dcouments."
Paterson goes on to give some evidence as to why he believes Killoch ought
to have preceeded Cesnock in the entail. I will try to capsulize:
1. Lord Loudoun did not set aside his two granddaughters, the eldest of
which became Baroness Loudoun and the second married Cesnock. In 1620 he
executed two other deeds to Sir John CAMPBELL of Lawers, husband to his
eldest daughter. Since he did not mean to exclude the granddaughters, it
was only logical that he would mention the second daughter who married
Cesnock next, especially since the closest male relative was distantly
related.
2. The arms of old Cesnock are those of Argyle quartered with Loudoun,
which Paterson says is proof that the origin was directly from Argyle. None
of the Loudoun cadets carry the arms of Argyle and Loudoun quartered except
Skerrington (see previous posts). Skerrington was originally from Argyle,
but a cadet of Loudoun who married the heiress of the family.
3. Strongest Proof: "is in the service of Hugh CAMPBELL of Killoch, 'heir
male to Hugh Lord LOUDOUN, the great-grand-nephew of his (Killoch's)
great-grandfather, ' in the office of Baillie of Kylesmure, on the 9th
January, 1634, only 21 years after the ential was make. He is here declared
heir-male of the very executor of the entail in 1613."
Paterson from the above deduces that Killoch, and NOT Cesnock, was the
nearest male relative to Baron Loudoun. He also states that Robertson
(another author) was incorrect to ascribe the ancestry of Cesnock to George,
second son of George CAMPBELL of Loudoun. The latter Paterson believes is
the origin of the Killoch family.
And if you have read this far, you are certainly a genealogist who
is interested in the Campbells!

I am looking for George w. Campbell who married Marry Ann Van Duzen. in 1850
they lived in Steuben County New York. George was born about 1820. I am
looking mainly for his parents. The only thing I do know is his father was in the
war of 1812.
Thank you in advance,
Cathy Campbell

Hi,
I've heard that anything that falls under the Bureau of Land Management is
now inaccessible to anyone. Seems there is always a few messing things up
for the many. The story behind it is somewhat ridiculous, but I'm not at
liberty to discuss it any further.

Genealogy and notes taken from "History of the Counties of Ayr and Wigtown"
by James
Paterson, vol 1--Kyle, Edinburgh: 1863
This book is set up a little differently, so I will start with the first
generation and go forward.
The principal family connected with the Campbells of Cesnock in the parish
of Galston was that of the Campbells of Barquharrie and Mayfield (Mayfield
was part of the Galston lands that had previously belonged to the Stewarts).
Captain Hugh CAMPBELL of Barquharrie was the third son , or garndson of Sir
Hugh CAMPBELL of Cesnock and Elizabeth CAMPBELL, second daughter of Master
George CAMBPELL of Loudoun. He married 5 June 1702 to Margaret BOSWELL,
second daughter of David BOSWELL of Auchinleck and Anne HAMILTON, daughter
of James HAMILTON of Dalziel.
****my notes: Sir Hugh CAMPBELL of Cesnock was born in March 1615 and died
in Edinburgh on 26 Sept 1686. It's possible, but unlikely that Hugh
CAMPBELL of Barquharrie was his son. My opinion is that it is more likely
his grandson.. I am interested in the parentage of this Hugh, whose father
may have been Hugh CAMPBELL who was living in Edinburgh in 1686 where his
father died.
Hugh CAMPBELL and Margaret BOSWELL had at least one child (I would be
interested in knowing if there were others), Hugh CAMPBELL of Barquharrie,
afterwards of Mayfield. He was Comptroller of the Customs at Ayr. He
married Margaret HENDERSON on 10 Jan 1727. She was the daughter of David
HENDERSON of Tinochside. They had at least three sons (Hugh, Claud, and
Bruce). Another son, Hume CAMPBELL, son of Hew CAMPBELL of Barquharrie, was
born and baptised at the Tower of Cesnock 15 Jan 1742. He may have died
young. Also, my perusal of the OPRs also gave a Margaret CAMPBELL as their
daughter, christened 27 Nov 1733.
********************
Apparently the sons Hugh and Claud also died or were without issue as we
find Bruce CAMPBELL designated as of Mayfield, Milrig, or of Hillhouse, as
he was often styled in the parochial registers. He married Annabella
WILSON, daugher of James WILSON of Kilmarnock. Their children were:
1. Hugh
2. Bruce, b. 25 may 1775; died unmarried. Captain E.I C.'s Naval service
3. Alexander. b. 23 Sept 1778, died Oct 1805 of wounds. He was a captain in
the 74th regiment and distinguised for bravery. He is mentioned in Welch's
"Reminiscences of India" for his bravery at the battle of Assaye. Upon his
death the Duke of Wellington wrote a letter to his brother extending high
compliments.
4. John, late in Sorn.
5. William, b. 4 May 1788, died Jan 1830
daughters:
1. Euphemia, married her cousin, Hugh WILSON, of Kilmarnock. She died
in 1817, leaving a son Hugh CAMPBELL WILSON
2. Mariane, died April 1825, unmarried.
Additionally parish records give three other children: (1) a son, name not
given, b. 20 jan 1774, (2) Susanna, b. 23 Sept 1777, and (3) Margaret Boyd,
b. 11 Feb 1782
*******************
Hugh CAMPBELL (son of Hugh & Margaret BOSWELL) was born in 1734 and died in
Feb 1813. He sold the part of his estate called Milrig (which was part of
the paternal property acquired from Cesnock) to Colonel HUGHS, who in turn
sold it to William GORDON of Milrig. IN 1863 it was owned by Captain A. D.
TAIT.
********************
The apparent son of Hugh CAMPBELL (1734-1813) was Hugh CAMPBELL of
Barquharrie. He was Captain in the 85th Regiment. He married in 1797 to
Sophia BARBER, youngest daughter of Thomas BARBER of Greaseley,
Nottinghamshire. He died 3 Jan 1824. His widow died at the Park,
Nottingham on 20 Jan 1860, aged 85. Their children were:
1. Hugh Bruce
2. Thomas Alexander
3. William
4. John
daughters:
1. Anne who married George DOUGLAS of Roddinghead
2. Annabella who married William COMYN of County Clare
3. Sophia Elizabeth who married Denis BROWNE of Brownestoun, Ireland
**********************
Hugh Bruce CAMPBELL of Barquharrie, b. April 1803, married Anne HURD of
Kentish Town with whom he had no children. Secondly he married Elizabeth
WERFE, daugher of E. WERFE of Kengrave Park, Nottinghamshire in Oct 1832.

I am trying to find more information on Andrew Campbell. He was born to John Campbell and Jane Wilson in Greenock in about 1875
He married Elizabeth Malcolm in New York in 1899( 2nd June).
I am trying to find out whether they had any children.
I believe he worked for the railroad, and that he lost either one or both legs in an accident.
He had 2 other brothers that went to North America, and one that went to South Africa. He had a sister that remained in Scotland.
I am offspring of the brother that went to South Africa.

3rd Generation: Charles CAMPBELL of Glasnock succeeded in 1608. He
appears to have married twice: (1) marriage contract 18 July 1615 to a
daughter of Gilmilnscroft, and (2) to Helen LOCKHART (parentage unknown).
She died 9 June 1626. Charles CAMPBELL died in August 1629 without a male
heir. His will mentions the following people: Robert FARQUHAR of
Gilmilscroft and William CAMPBELL of Underwelwod, executors; Johne, Lord
LOWDOUNE , Sir Williame CUNYGHAME of Caprington, and James CUNYNGHAME,
minister at Cumnock as overseers of everything.

Paterson infers that Margaret CAMPBELL, Charles' daughter, was married to
John BEG of Welltrees. Also that one of Charles' sisters married Mungo
FARQUHAR of Ligtshaw and was the mother of Hew FARQUHAR mentioned above.
This gave rise to a double connection between the Glasnock and Gilmilnscroft
families which led to the litigation in the 5th generation.
2nd Generation: William CAMPBELL of Glasnock--his name appears in 1603 in
the will of Margaret BAIRD, wife of John WILSONE in Mr.dykes and is
described as their "master".
1st Generation: William CAMPBELL of Glasnock had a daughter, who married
Alexander FARQUHAR of Gilmilnscroft. Marriage contract dated 17 Dec 1586 in
Cumnock. He also had a son, William, who succeeded him.
The Campbells of Glasnock were said to be the last in the entail of Lord
LOUDOUN in 1613, but how they are descended from that family was not known
to the author. The property originally belonged to the DUNBARS of Cumnock.
James DUNBAR of Glasnock died without issue in the mid 16th century.
