When did he die in Sydney? His death cert should list his parents names and
his place of birth.

Hi everyone
My mother's maiden name was Campbell.
I have found out that her grandfather, John Campbell, came to
Australia from Glasgow. He married ELLEN ELIZABETH GILES in 1896 in
Sydney. All I know about him is he died at 98 years old in a road
accident in Sydney. I'm fairly new to genealogy and I'm not sure how
to find out more about John. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Once again, I thoroughly enjoyed the explanation given by Diarmid.
Modern day names; I was born in Vancouver, B.C. Canada, in 1936. The story
is my mother asked my father when I was born, what name have you chosen for
your son and his reply was "for our new King - King Edward"! I am sure you
know the rest of the story - he was known as the un-crowned King.
It was some years later we obtained my birth certificate and was surprised
to see my registered name was BENJAMIN EDWARD CAMPBELL - Benjamin being the
name of my uncle Benjamin Cowie of Peterhead. I continue to use Edward to
this day.
There is more to this story but suffice it to say in light of Diarmid's
comments why would my father and mother who were from Scotland (and my
mother was very "Scottish") ever name me after a King?
How times change!
Edward Campbell
Robert,
My own understanding about the name Edward in Scotland is as follows:
For some centuries Edward was not a popular name in Scotland due to the
Edwards who were kings of England who wanted the Scots Kings to either hand
over to them or at lease acknowledge their dominance. (temp. robert Bruce
etc.)
However after the union of crowns in 1603 followed by the union of
parliaments in 1707, the concept of 'Britain' began to emerge as a national
concept (although unfortunately some ill-informed Journalists still refer to
it as 'England' at times). This meant more mixing of peoples, particularly
in the services among the officers and their families, with the result that
Scots who had English friends called Edward began to use the name for their
children. There had been some use of the name in Scotland before about 1800
but not much. After that, in the Victorian era, it became more used in
Scotland.
The OPR (Pld Parish Registers) from which Patricia Terpstra has been
transcribing some of the Ayr Campbell records can be accessed through the
Scottish National Archive or through the micro-fische at the various LDS
(Mormon) sites around the country. I found when I visited one of the LDS
family history places that I was not proselytised (if that is the word) so
you are quite safe. They are sometimes listed under 'stake house'.

Hi, Robert Campbell here. I am new to the mailing list on Campbells. Here
is my info:
My current brick wall is who were David Campbell's parents. He was borne
abt 1794 in Greene Co. TN. David's wife Barsheba/Bathsheba Carter, born 25
July 1797 in Geene County, daughter of John Jr. and Elizabeth Carter. David

Information I have relating to David Campbell b. 1794:

Hi Patricia,
Thanks for all of your work in posting the Christenings. I was wondering if you have ran across any Edward Campbell's??
I have been told that Edward is not a Scottish name but my 3rd g grandfather that came from Scotland in 1788 to SC was named Edward. Have you ever seen that name used?
Thanks,

Hello List,
I am hopeing someone out there has heard of this name, and could help me
with extra information about him please?
All I know is he was my Great Grandfather Andrew Campbell's brother born in
Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne, England in probably the end of December 1964?
or early January 1865, as John was christened on January 29 1865 in Walker,
his parents were Andrew Campbell and Elizabeth Fergus. John was a witness to
his brother Andrew Campbell and Isabella Guthrie on December 14 1882.
If anyone knows any other information about John Fergus Campbell I would
appriciate some help.
Thank you in advance for any information I might receive?
Kind Regards
Pamela J Groves
