Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Let me throw my brick wall in here as there seems to be a big crowd
assembled. I am seeking info on Susan Ann Campbell. She married Wiseman
Bledsoe 23 March 1844 and died 20 August 1850. This info came from New
Providence Presbyterian Church minutes in Bedford county, TN. I assume
she would have been born ca 1820/25. I need her parents/siblings. Thanks
for reading this and for any help you can provide.

Hi List, I had to add my thoughts on this, I read every word with interest!
I have no idea as to where my Campbell line started or where it ends, so
every detail is a clue for me. I feel like I learn something every day from
all the great minds that are on here to help us.
So in closing , I'd just like to say, I enjoy all the history and music and
stories that make this list so great! And will continue to look for Campbell
mail daily!
Hugs to all my Campbell family, Katie

Diarmid,
The following is now in the "Welcome Message" for the Campbell List, I
whole heartily agree that genealogy is more than just finding ones
ancestors.
B. PURPOSE
The CAMPBELL-L Mailing List is a surname e-mail list for genealogical
research, history and culture discussion of the Clan Campbell or any
variations any place or any time.
I hope this meets with your approval.
Regards,
Tom Hesler, Campbell List Manager

Amen to that one, though you can right click the sender and go to properties on questionable emails. That has always shown me CAMPBELL-L(a)rootsweb.com on the detail tab.

Diarmid,
I'll check through the pics over the weekend and get back.
One of the problems is the amount of lichen which is into the lettering, the
other is the natural erosion - they really haven't been cared for that well.
There are also some of the earlier slabs which probably need someone with
some serious knowledge to have a look at.
I'll spend a bit of time and try and do some kind of index.
I haven't been in the Argyll vault so am not sure what is there other than
what is recorded in the various texts on the subject.

I am seeing much activity on this site so think it may be a good time to ask for some help. I am looking for ancestors of Charles CAMPBELL who may have been born in Derry County, Ireland about 1703 and who may have married Mary Trotter. I descend from their son, Joseph who married Sarah (Sally) Givens. Any help will be appreciated. I had help from this list getting this far so now need help to continue back further.
Thanks in advance.

List,
I fully support Bruce in this and hope that perhaps the List Manager
(Listmaster?) can see whether it is possible to change the subject title of
the List that people get when they subscribe to:
"Campbell Genealogy/History/Culture" or some such means of conveying that
that was the original intention of this list and it is only occasional
newcomers of a passonately and solely genealogical nature who snipe at us if
we leave the ancestral and narrow.
Diarmid Campbell - one of the originators of the Campbell-L List.

Judy,
You are welcome. I hope that the occasional snipers do not put anyone off
asking Campbell (or Sept) related historical or cultural questions on this
list because otherwise it can be a dead bore at times and was meant for all
questions related to Cambpells.
Those who snipe need to be given a kindly response that on this particular
list they are out of line. I wish that the List Manager could put 'Campbell
Genealogy/History/Culture' as the purpose of the List for those who
subscribe. Next time he posts I can get his address and make the
suggestion.

I would like to see the prefix in the subject field like [Campbell] on this

Patty,
fire away as much as you want, I personally would like to see some
historical/traditional material on the list. I would think it very valuable,
particularly in the archives. I would hate to see the list fragmented,
although I have only been on it for about 3/4 years and see myself still as
a bit of a newbie and can in no way speak for others, many of whom have been
on it for many years.
Maybe we could add a prefix in the subject like like GEN or HIST which would
likely help.
Again I can't speak for Diarmid but I have always found him so helpful and
only too willing to share what he has.
For the record my subjects are piping, piping history, West Highland history
and the '45.
I have tried to develop my knowledge on the Clan Campbell where it crosses
into those areas and have spent the last year really digging out primary
sources.
I have spent the last six months on full time research of the Argyll Militia
in the '45 and have to acknowledge the great help there of Alastair Campbell
of Airds.
I also have a nice collection of piping, Campbell and Argyll photos,
probably about 10,000 in all.
My knowledge isn't comprehensive in all areas but anything I have is open to
all, including the photos.

.
I have taken a quantity of photos of as many Campbells as I could find in
Kilmun Kirk - the headstones, that is, not the bodies!
There are about 50 in all. Shgould anyone require a jpeg please let me know
- I'm not always quick, but I'll do my best.
Kilmun is just north of Dunoon on Loch Seannta, incorrectly Anglofied as the
Holy Loch.

I certainly support the "Campbell Genealogy/History/Culture" idea.
The list owner is Tom Hesler, tomhesler(a)tds.net. RootsWeb is the host for the mailing list.

I for one, am not. Following this thread, and ones similar, have given me some of
the most satisfying reading I've experienced on the list in a long time. Genealogy,
and being able establish our connection to those gone before us, is well and good,
but there are times, and these are some of them, when context is everything. We have
more than a blood line to explore and discover. We also have a rich historical and
cultural heritage that explains not just who we are, but why we are.
Keep those great pieces of prose coming.
Yours, aye

I don't know enough about my Scottish heritage and feel its a part of the
process. Is anyone in the group upset with anyone posting questions that
relate to the Scottish heritage and or the Campbell Heritage. We have some
valuable experts in the group that I for one would like to present questions
to from time to time. Like Judy I think twice before posting anything that
is not a genealogy question out of respect for all. Maybe if all of us
calmly give our opinion on this subject the group will know what way to go.
That is if Diarmid and Bruce who would end up with a lot of questions to
answer agrees as well as the person in charge of this email group."
Personally, I love these kind of discussions. Many times the only way to find the hard information you are looking for on ancestors is to learn more about their culture and life. To put my two cents worth in: I think anything to do with the history or genealogy is a wonderful addition to the list. The things that do bother me on genealogy lists are the totally off topic and personal conversations that crop up and go on and on, sometimes even getting nasty. Not saying necessarily this list, as I belong to several. If everyone would just take a moment before they post to any list to ask themselves "Is this of interest to the list or better directly to an individual?" I have also seen very rude messages that target individuals, and I don't think those belong on any list. We are all adults here and have the ability to delete any one message that we don't agree with or aren't interested in, but to have to hit the delete over and over when people reply with negative opinio!
ns just casts a negative shroud over the whole list. I agree with Bruce, too, that adding a note in the subject line is very helpful. That way if anyone is not interested in historical subjects they can automatically delete. I love the history and enjoy the list and hearing from all the different Campbell's out there. Let's keep it fun.

Paul,
If it helps I found out where in Ireland my Daniel Campbell was burn on one
of the birth records for his kids. And I too would be interested in looking
at the pictures you have. Maybe you should publish a book. I have a cousin
doing that with his collection of old post cards from Waterbury Conn.

Right now I can't get back beyond an Allen Campbell born in 1784 in
Maryland, USA (and we still don't actual records for that connection).

Linda,
Here in the hills of VA where I live, a group of people have banded
together to play the bagpipes. My dentist, Dr. Dana Chamberlain, said they
usually get together to play in Abingdon, VA at least one night a week. Dr.
C. playing his pipes leads the way for many events held here in my county,
including the Relay for Life cancer walk.
Hearing that sound go up, resounding off the hills is an absolutely
amazing sound!!

Diarmid,
Thank you for that clarification. I have virtually stopped posting to
this list. Once in a while I want to ask a question about Scotland and/or
Scottish heritage which doesn't pertain to a specific genealogy question. I
don't ask it since there are those who become 'upset' when it isn't.
I have enjoyed this discussion. I enjoy the discussions of history you
begin sometimes. It teaches and informs me about my ancestors regarding
subjects I might not have known to ask. While I know the genealogy of my
family (mostly) here in this country I still don't know much. And every
time someone begins a thread such as this one I learn more.
Thank you to you and Bruce and the others who risk the wrath and
enlighten me.
