Wigtown Campbells are rare. Any family tradition of moving south from the
Loudoun area of Ayr. The Campbells of Loudoun moved from Argyll (or
wherever) to marry a Crawford heiress of Loudoun in the fourteen hunddreds
and produced many younger branches of that family who became farmers around
that area.. A friend wrote an article on one Solway Campbell family in the
Clan Campbell Society (North America) quarterly Journal a coule of years
ago. He might possibly have ideas or sources. He is Duncan Beaton, 77 Back
o'Hill, Houston, Renfrewshire PA6 7LE, Scotland. He enjoys helping people
if he can (he is Scottish contributing editor of the Journal).
Good luck in your search.

Hi Mary Ellen;
Boy, I spent a lot of time looking at George's (m. Margaret and died in 1791)
will trying to analyze it and determine whether or not he was related to
Henry. There are so many similarities, that I wouldn't be surprised. They
both lived and died in Amherst; the children's names in several cases are the
same; they both are associated with some of the same families (Mays &
Wright's), but so far, I haven't found the absolute proof of kinship. One of
my Ambrose's daughters, Elizabeth m. a Mays. The other daughters m. Page &
Innis/Ennis brothers. No Cash's. There is another Campbell (Lawrence) who
has Cash's in his line. Lawrence was an Executor for Henry's will in 1772.
I don't know if Henry came over with any family. I know that the son Ambrose
(my line) was born in 1740 in Scotland (DAR rec.). The only other child I
have a definite b. d. for is Joel in 1748 from an obit posted to Lib. of VA.
Just when the others were born, I do not know. Anyway, one can assume that
Henry & Charity came to American between those two dates. There is a listing
for a Henry Campbell in the PILI for entry to Phila. PA. in 1746. The source
lists him as indenturing himself (alas...no ships name as would be shown had
he used an agent) to 3 or 4 persons for several years. I cannot definitely
say that this is my Henry, but it fits the years 1740 in Scotland and 1748 in
America. I haven't looked for a George Campbell as yet.
These Campbell's are an interesting lot, but to try and sort them out is a
hair pulling job. Just trying to find the father of Tandy (Ambrose son) took
a long time. I went through every Campbell in Augusta Co., VA. searching for
him (Tandy was in Augusta Co. in 1810 census) and then started on Amherst Co.
Finally I found him. Thank goodness he was kind enough to name his son
Tandy instead of John. That's another whole story. By the way, Tandy m. a
Mary Ann (Polly) Wright. If you would like any information on this family,
let me know. Maybe we can connect old Henry and old George some time.

Hi,
Oban is a small town on Scotland's west coast. It is adjacent to the
Isles of Mull and Iona. A automobile ferry service connects Oban with Mull
numerous times each day. I traveled there this summer and didn't realize it
was a Campbell stronghold then. When making reservations for the ferry I
started to spell Campbell for the ferry representative. He said" you don't
have to spell Campbell for me, this is Campbell country" !
My Campbell were from Tyrone in Ireland.
good luck, Michael Campbell

Joyce,
Oban is in Argyll in Scotland. It may have a parish of its own.
There are a number of 'Bridgends' even in Argyll. One is at Kilmichael
Glassary (also the name of the parish) and another on the Isle of Islay in
Argyll and a large village or small town.
I am not sure which country you are in so if people don't say that then it
is harder to advise on sources.
Be aware that the IGI is only a guide. Since they let anyone add their own
material, the level of accuracy is a bit shot. If you find information
there, go back to the original documents (in copy of microfische) if you
can.
All the birth, marriage and death records for Scotland after 1855 are now on
line with the Scottish National Archive (formerly Scottish Records Office)
but you have to buy time in 24 hour bits with a credit card - it is not a
lot to pay but since I don't know where you are I don't know what currency
to quote.
Good luck and all the best,

Hi Phyllis, your query caught my eye. I have Campbell's in Albemarle,
Amherst and Nelson Counties. The name Ambrose stood out, my brick wall is
George Campbell born about 1700, don't know where though, he married
Margaret (don't have a last name)...their children are: George, Catherine,
John, Elizabeth, Archabald, Thomas, Margaret and Ruth.....
Their son George Campbell was born about 1720 in Albemarle County, Virginia
and Died February 7, 1791 in Amherst County, Virginia. He married Catherine,
their children are: George, Edward, John, Ambrose, Joel, Caty, Saral, and
Mary.
The names of these children are similar to the ones you listed so am
wondering if they are from the same group of Campbells. Also have wondered
if the first George was born in Scotland or Ireland. You mentioned that
Henry and Charity came to America around 1746....do you know if any other
family members came with them?
The Campbells, Masseys, Mays and Cash lines married quite a bit especially
in the Amherst and Nelson County Virginia area. I have been at the brick
wall of the first known George Campbell in my line for quite some time and
would love to go beyond.......any help would be appreciated. Mary Ellen

Hi,
I didn't hit the reply all button, because I wanted to talk to you. You have
2 of my surnames. Hopper is my Grandmother's maiden name and that isn't a
very common name in Missouri where I live. I don't know too much about her
family, only what I have on paper because her mother died in childbirth with
her. She was unmarried at the time also which is another reason I think that
they never spoke about her. She was Maggie Hoppers daughter of Laura and
William Hoppers of Buffalo, Missouri.
My Campbell is a little bit farther off, my paternal GGG Grandmother was
Unity Campbell of Sussex County, Delaware.
Is any of this familiar at all?
Happy St. Patricks Day to you
