What was Nellies maiden name?
I didn't find David in Shannon county after 1900 and would like to look for
Nellie's family if I can .. please email me at margecam(a)attbi.com, with
Nellies information from the marriage record & I will try that route.
My husband's great grandmother lost some children in 1903 to the county (St
Francios or Iron in MO) due to not being able to take care of them. times
were very hard all over, but from what I can tell, SE MO was hard hit (as
were some other areas) because the hill people were poor to begin with.
Sarah Jane Campbell lost at least two babies to starvation, from what we can
tell, and the county/state took her twins because they were starving.. one
died the other was raised by another family & returned home as an adult.
Sometimes these people were told this was temporary, when in fact, it was
not. The county/State thought they were doing the right thing.

Marge-Thank you for the interest in Nellie and David Campbell, my husband's
grandparents. We know that they were married in April 1899 and that the 1900
census of St. Francis County,MO. has David 21years old and Nellie 18 years
old.
Their baby daughter,Gracie (my mother-in-law) is 4 months old.
In 1903 we find where Gracie was taken from the Orphan Train in
Joplin,MO. by a family by the name of Brown. I don't have a copy of the 1910
census but am told that Gracie was living with the Browns in Calhoun (Henry
Co.) MO. This is where my husband was born in 1929.
Our question is,what happened to David and Nellie to cause Gracie to be
put
on the Orphan train? I can find no death notices for them and can find no
trace of
Nellie's family in Shannon County where, according to the marriage
license,both David and Nellie lived.
Thank you for your interest. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
