Hello to all,
I'm new to this list, but I have two possibly related questions and need a "Campbell expert" to assist me.
First, I have found plenty on the 1st Marquess of Argyll; however, while the references I've checked show his heir, etc., they only mention that he had three other daughters; no names, no marriages. Surely someone out there has "Gloomy Archibald's" daughters?
Second, I have found a William Campbell Colhoun/Colquhoun, who was b.c. 1643 and is listed as the son of a Robert Colquhoun by a Katherine McAuselan. I can't find a Campbell anywhere in the immediate ancestry of this Robert Colquhoun, and as his son, William Campbell Colhoun, also married a Catherine McCausland, I begin to wonder if perhaps there wasn't a transcription error in this line and that the Catherine who married Robert Colquhoun was, in fact, a Campbell.
Thanks and regards to all,
Larry D. Hamilton Coats
Arthur, I do not know at all if any of my family was related to Mack families, but found it interesting that my grandfather's name was JOHN MACK CAMPBELL. He was born 1869 Pope Co., AR. Don't have a clue where the name Mack could have come from. Do you have any Campbell connections? Wanda
Dear Cousins,
Does any one have any information about the First Tennessee regiment,
commanded by Col. H. C. Campbell which fought in the battle of Monterey and
other places during the Mexican - American War? He had a captain Adrian
Northcut. One of the other men in this regiment was Washington Lafayette
Campbell from Coffee County, Tennessee. He is supposedly related to Col. H.
C. Campbell. Any information about these men would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Think there are as many Campbells north as south. Anyhow, My brickwall is
Samuel Campbell, called Capt., who married Elinor (Eleanor) Campbell in 1782
in Albany, NY. He is said to be Elinor's cousin, but I can't find how. She
was born in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co, NY and they lived there all of their
life as far as I know. Her obit (1846) says he and all of their children
preceeded her in death.
Elinor's parents were John Campbell and Eleanor Ramsey. Have more info.
Ruth
Pat,
Did Colin have a son named John who married Martha ??? Who had a son
named Sherman born in Burnt Prairie, White Co., IL?
Thanks,
Barbara

Tom - I have an elusive James Campbell - great-grandfather - that has
questionable roots in NJ but did definitely did end up in Illinois. He
was born about 1858, records disagree here as well. From about 1895 he
was in Illinois and spent most of his life, until he died in 1940 in
Nevada Township. Based upon WWI photographs of 2 Campbell brothers from
the same, very small township, we suspect he may have a had a brother in
the same locale at the turn of the century. One of the brothers has an
extremely strong resemblance to my father at about the same age, and
they share the same name as well. No one is left in the family that
might recall that if there was another brother to James (Jesse) as he
was also known.
I am going to try and pursue the line of the two brothers, but as yet do
not have an idea of who their parents might have been. I have a day set
aside next month to do some investigating. Their names were Harry and
Joseph Campbell. Harry was born 9/25/1896 in Nevada Township, Livingston
County, IL. Joseph was born 3/6/1898 in Esmen Township (adjacent to
Nevada). Both are buried in Odell, in Livingston County. The
Arvig-Campbell VFW Post in Pontiac, IL was named in their honor as both
were killed during the war.
If this rings a bell with anyone, you know where to find me.
Debra (Campbell) O'Donnell
After Scotland,my Campbell's ended up in the states of Illinois,New York and
New Jersey.
Names were Duncan,Colin,James,Richard and Robert. Time frame from 1850's to
present.
Thanks for the feedback,

I hope I didn't come across too smug with my reply. I didn't know just how far north you meant, knot
knowing where you are from. Happy hunting.

Fellow Clansmen,
I've read quite a bit of posts regarding the southern branch of Campbell's-
would appreciate inquiries regarding Campbell's of the north.

Hi Margie, Here is what is in the 1850 Shannon Co census: Next door to Ellis:
89-89 Stallcup, Emor age 61 farmer b Ky, Martha Stallcup age 10 b Mo; Then
four Crittenden names and then Lewis Dillard age 14. I have that Mary Jane
Wilburn md. Lewis Dillard and Nancy Ann Wilburn md. our James Campbell.
Lewis Dillard is not in the 1860 Shannon Co., Mo. census. I don't know, it
is very confusing. The 1850 census does not actually read Martha (Stallcup)
it just has ditto marks for her last name. Please try to find the info you
had gotten from someone else, I would like to see what it says. Thanks
Jeanette.

This is not my family line, but may be of help to others. This was sent to
me by a Campbell family here in Missouri. - Jeanette.
1) Reuben Campbell born 1802 in Tenn. md. Mary "Polly" Dillard dau. of
John, their children were: Lee who md. Lizzie Bonham and then Linda
Waltrip. Robert. George. Andrew who md. Sarah Bonham. John Newman
1832-1913 md. Orpha M. Douglas and this is who the story is about.
John Newman Campbell & Orpha M. Douglas had the following children:
1 Albert D. 1855 - 1925 md. Harriet Bennett 1847-1946 md. 1878.
2. Columbus Boyd 1856-1950 md. Ona Lucinda Ferguson
3 Elijah W 1858-1919 md. Martha L. Baker

"The Trip from Georgia to Missouri"
John Newman Campbell and Orpha Douglas, his wife, lived near Calhoun,
Gordan Co., GA. The Civil War broke out and J N entered the war. At the
end of the war J N wanted Orpha to bring the kids to Indiana as that is
where he was released from the Army-- with only 25 cents to start life over
again with his family.Orpha's father hitched up his team and drove them to
Resacca, GA where Orpha and children caught a train to Tennessee, they were
put off the train at Chattanooga, Tenn. From there they rode in a boxcar
(coal) to Nashville. They took a steamboat from Nashville to Louisville,
Ky. From Louisville they took another boat to New Albany, Indiana. They
then took a train to New Providence, Clark Co., Indiana. Can you imagine
poor Orpha having to take this big trip with her little kids, alone?? But
she was so anxious to get to her husband. Their train was fired on once
near Nashville but Boyd says he thought his mother was awful brave to try
to make this trip. J N had rented a house North of Nashville in the
country - and he was good with an ax so he worked in timber. Andrew, J N's
brother came to J N's place there. Andrew was in Gen'l Lees army and had
been dismissed. So he came to John N's home which was only one big room,
with a fireplace. John soon built a big kitchen on the back so they
thought they really had a mansion to live in. John and Andrew, both knew
there was no need to go back to Georgia as all the money in the South, was
no good anymore. J N & Andy got plenty of work in Indiana, cutting cross
ties,(doesn't this sound natural?) Boyd says in his book that his dad J N
and his uncle Andy chopped and hewed cross ties in the winter until blood
ran from their chapped hands. In the spring when the sap came up J N got a
job at the tan yard peeling . Bark was badly needed in those days for
tanning cow hides. Boyd says he and his brother Albert was old enough to
help0 a little with peeling the bark from the chestnut oak timber. They
got a good price for a cord of tan bark - By this time Andy and Boyd s
uncle Bob came up to Indiana. Andy and Bob both boarded with JN and Orpha
so this helped out with buying groceries. J N had two other brothers named
Lee and George. J N lived in Indian for 5 years.
The Douglas family had moved to Arkansas, they wrote to JN and Orpha
to come to Arkansas and raise cotton to make good money. J N & Orpha had
added two sons to their family in Indiana. Matt - Madison B and William
A. They bought two teams and wagons and left for Arkansas in 1870. Thery
were four weeks on the road but, arrived at Grandpa Douglas place on
Strawberry River in Lawrence Co., Arkansas. In 1872 Boyds dad built a
house on Reads Creek, Boyds sister Elzina Josephine was born that
year. They had a family of 3 boys and 3 girls, this was in Sharp Co., Ark
and Evening Shade was the county seat. After four years the land did not
produce good so Pop moved to a place he rented on Spring River. While
living here Pop went to see his brother, George Campbell who was living in
Missouri., while there he rented a farm in Barry County, MO. and was
supposed to take possession of it by October 1876. Uncle Byron Douglass
and brother Albert decided to go to this farm and make a crop for one year
so our livestock would have feed. Pop also made a crop for the Valley farm
so we had plenty of food for our stock when we moved to Mo. Pop bought a
bunch of yearling cows to drive to Mo. The distance was 250 miles and we
had to go through Springfield, MO which was a small town in 1876. We liked
our new house with three rooms down and one big room upstairs. We were
about three miles from a little place called Gad Fly.Later renamed
Corsicana. Here in Missouri the main trading center was Pierce City, which
was a good business town. Andy married Sarah Bonham and moved to Pike Co.,
Mo. and then later moved to Iron Co., MO.
Lee married Lizzie Bonham, they were sisters. Andy had moved to Barry Co.,
Mo. from Carter Co., Mo. and helped J N build a new house on 80 acres.
In 1884-85 Boyd and Jerome ran a sorgham mill.
And that was all there was.......
Jeanette.

Thank you for your reply, it is nice to know there are other cousins out
there looking for this information. I can't for the life of me understand why
this cannot be figured out. There has got to be someone out there with this
info, its not like the Campbells didn't have any children, they had an over
abundance of children. My goal is to get them back to Scotland or where ever
if possible, but we can't even figure them out here in the US. I want to find
out what branch of Clan Campbell they come from. I don't know about you
Jeanette but that brick wall is starting to really hurt my head

Richard, where in TN was your George L. Campbell in 1825? My Campbells were
in Williamson Co. TN in 1825. They were Edward, Sr., John K., Edward Jr.,
Alexander, Mary, and Neil. Hoping for any connection. Wanda

Hello, Campbell researchers,
There is a Thomas W. Campbell, age 42, on the 1850 Washington County, KY
census with wife, Clarissa, age 24, and two children, Sarah F., age 1, and
Nathanial, age 8 months. This Thomas is listed as a farmer, born in VA. He
remains on the 1860, 70, & 80 censuses. On the 1880 census his parents are
listed as being born in VA. I am searching for an ancestor, Thomas Waller
Campbell who was on the Hopkins County, KY census in 1840 with his wife and
children, This Thomas and the one in Washington County were very close to
the same age. His wife, Rebecca Wingate Campbell, is on the Hopkins Co.
1850 census with her children. I can find no record or mention of Thomas
Waller Campbell's death, burial, or divorce. If anyone can make a
connection between these two or provide information about the Thomas
Campbell from Washington Co., please get in touch. Thank you.
Suzanne Russell
Would you know if the Wiginton/Wigginton family might have come from
Wigtownshire. I have had problem jumping the Atlantic pond to find the
family spring.
Thanks,
Lynn Wiginton
